Not only he died so young, his peak was shortened by throat tumor. It's almost tragic. Ettore is certainly one of the greatest singers I've ever heard.
When Ettore Bastianini died we were truly robbed of one of the great voices of opera and he was robbed of his prime years. He had a deep rich dark sonorous tone that all baritones should have, almost bass like which makes sense because he began his career as a bass.

La romanza "di provenza ..." gli è stata fatta replicare, a furor di pubblico, per ben 3 volte. Ed era al suo debutto.

@@zs1968 How many versions, shouting like a mean elder brother of Alfredo, not that father in desperation and pleading more than harsh criticizing... Ettore Bastianini read the text well and his voice with bass tune deep and wide, mature man's voice, supports Verdi's line! Most glorious, there are only a few others such as MacNail, have delivered the similar way, true baritone grace. Looking forward for 100 Celebration!

Callas and Bastianini were polar opposites in terms of vocalism and interpretation. I prefer Callas being paired with Gobbi and Bastianini with Tebaldi.
