Zancanaro was a regular and great baritone in Munich and Vienna in the 80s, I saw him many times. This is a a wonderful interpretation.
One one occasion his father was in a performance, I forget which opera, and the audience loved GZ's aria and bravoed then his dad stood up and called out "e lui è mio figlio!" and the house went through the roof.

      GB
      in questo repertorio preferisco :
      Titta Ruffo,,Stracciari,Danise,

      dum spiro spero.
      Hai ragione è come!
      ciao.

I keep asking the question why this man is not recognized as one of the greatest baritones of modern times? I would appreciate in insightful comment; not just a bland negative statement. He has it all; legato, range, rich timber and a ringing top! And that for a baritone!

    • @eedgerton769

He was quite popular in Europe and had plenty of work in the big European houses. He only had 7 dates at the Met in 1982, however, so many opera cognoscenti have never even heard of him. After the 1970s he rarely performed in America. He reportedly had inner ear problems supposedly exacerbated by flying, so he preferred to stay in Europe where money was to be made; the U.S. houses could not pay as much. He also had a relatively narrow repertoire (Verdi, Puccini and a few of the French warhorses). He got a very late start in music, having been a policeman until the age of 30. He also tended to avoid the limelight, he just liked to work and get paid (and work he did - in the 1980s he was singing up to 20 nights a month, which is insane). He was certainly not unknown in his time, however.

I've wondered the same thing ever since I first heard him on YT several years ago. I only had to watch a couple of videos for him to knock Yuri Mazurok off the My Favorite Baritone pedestal he'd occupied for three decades. To me, he's the Fritz Wunderlich of baritones--exquisite timbre unlike any other singer's, flawless technique, and, most importantly, he knows what GB Shaw called "the secret in the poet's heart" when it comes to communicating what composer and librettist intended. I was a Met regular back in 1982, didn't hear a word about him on the standee grapevine, & the NY Times ignored all his performances. Glad to know he was properly appreciated in Europe, but what a loss for US operagoers!

The Director must have disliked the wonderful talented Giorgio Zancanaro ! Notice that During the most exciting part of the aria , the director makes him sing it with his back to the audience and puts the attention on Neil ! Had a director asked me to to that , I would have done it for all the rehearsals ,then on opening night I would just plant my feet looking out to the audience and sing ! Some directors have no clue about the traditions of opera !!!!!!

Of that era, Cappuccilli, Bruson and Zancanaro (not to mention Silvano Caroli, Mario Zanasi, Glossop, Thomas Allen - I could go on) I heard them all. With great respect, you clearly know very little and certainly not sufficient to tell the world "what this role will need". Do you have any idea, any idea, how "big shining and strong" was MacNeil's voice? It was ENORMOUS with phenomenal sonority. So too, Cappuccilli - one of the greatest Germonts who appeared never to breathe in this aria (search out the TH-cam of him his breathing is extraordinary - th-cam.com/video/JtqFLtlclC0/w-d-xo.html). Bruson (th-cam.com/video/sMXK8FsucKs/w-d-xo.html) and Zancanaro (th-cam.com/video/M5ub0fSHObw/w-d-xo.html), although different, brought a phenomenal nobility of sound (even through the cruelty) to the role of Germont. I love both Ettore Bastianini & Giorgio Zancanaro. It's not surprising that Bastianini influenced Zancanaro. However, given that Bastianini started out as a bass, he always seemed more like a bass baritone than a lyric baritone to me. Zancanaro is essentially a strong lyric baritone. He reminds me somewhat of Riccardo Stracciari. Both are WONDERFUL! How I wish we had baritones like this now!

I agree, it´s a pity there are no other videos of him.
My Favorite is also Ettore...my second choice however would be Zancanaro.
    have a nice day.

How ridiculous are all these who always want to compare a singer with another one. I only get a great pleasure listening all these wonderful voices and I should be so happy if Gos had given me such a voice!Sorry I don't speak english very well. So many schools for singing and opera houses are ridiculous because they compare singers.
And Verdi and Wagner were ridiculous. They compared singers in order to choose adequate voices for their operas. They rejected singers that were not well suited for some roles.
Yesterday and now there are singers uncomfortable with some operas, composers, roles, etc. Others just read the scores and....no more.
Indeed, if you read some interviews, many singers analyze the art of singing and underline the problems, and advantages of many recognized artists/ partners.
Not everybody is good or excellent in all the roles.
Some conductors are not masters of singing and choose inadequate voices.

If Giorgio Zancanaro reminds me of anyone it's Riccardo Starcciari, and that is high praise. Both baritones had what I would call relatively bright baritone sounds with open production. Each singer is what I would call intensely musical. That's not just musicianship, which can be acquired, but musicality. That's something you have to be born with, there's no way to fake it. I strongly prefer Giorgio Znacanaro to the other baritones of his time, Sherrill Milnes; Ingvar Wixell, Louis Quilico, Leo Nucci, Piero Cappucilli, & Renato Bruson.
