Great video but sadly I could not complete the job on my 2015 Outback 3.6 engine. At 1:07 you remove the battery and plastic tray (same as mine). Under that tray is a secondary battery metal tray (bolted to the frame) with a vertical wall between the battery and engine. There are 2 bolts opposite the spark plug on the frame that hold it in place and I cannot get to them with a standard ratchet. Hoping I can visit hardware store for a ratchet with a longer handle. This seems like an engineer lazily solving a heat problem in my generation car. :(
Ashley Keith OH no!!!! I have not run into this yet but when I do I am absolutely going to make an addendum to this video and update with more info! Thank you so much for the heads up!
Finished the job with the help of my dad. Had to remove the plastic skid plate under the car to get to the bolts holding the battery tray to the body. After that, we could get to all the spark plugs. The one closest to the driver is a real BEAST so be prepared with time and patience to get it done.

You are awesome all around. I would have never tackled this job before seeing this video. I followed your instructions to the tee on my 2018 Outback w/ 3.6 engine. I was slow and meticulous but in 5 hours the job was complete. It gave me great satisfaction knowing I did a good job. It wouldn't have been possible without your instruction. Well done, the video couldn't have been better and the narration was sweet. You should be very proud of yourself! Thank you!
A magnetic 5/8" spark plug socket is a good investment, and I was able to do it with a 3" wobbly extension, but yes that last one took some patience. This is a great video, and my mechanic quoted me $635 on my 2010 3.6 Outback. Thanks Faye for saving me some SERIOUS coin!
The most extensive car work I have ever done was changing the bulb in my headlight a few months ago. I don't even know how to change my oil. I watched your video, and have successfully changed the spark plugs on my new 2010 Legacy 3.6!! It took over five hours, and I have a few giant bruises, but I am stupidly proud of myself. Thank you for your videos!
Ah! I just did wheel bearings literally yesterday! I wish I had seen this, I would have absolutely filmed it for you!! Well, I can never predict what type of work my customers are going to want next, but the next time I do wheel bearings, I will remember this and film the process!

Faye, You just saved me over $1000 from a body shop. I have never worked on my car before, but I knew I could get this done with just a bit of patience. I was able to remove everything and get everything buttoned back up in under 2 hours. Thank you so much!
Thank you, Faye. I thought for sure I was going to have to lift the engine up a little. But I did modify the process some. I used a non-wobble extension (same length) in the spark plug socket and the the wobble in the ratchet, and basically left the non-wobble in the spark plug socket for the entire process for all of the plugs
Those back plugs are a bear! I did this on my 2006 OBS LLBean 3.0H6. I went from underneath, but the front 2 look easy enough from either the top or bottom. Great video, Ms H! Great camera angles for sure!
I have watched so many videos with this procedure and you are by far the best! Your camera work is steady, you break it down simply and give great insight on the required tools needed. Well done Faye!
I just replaced the 4 spark plugs on my 2013 Outback 2.6 4 cylinder engine in about 90 minutes and the instructions were very helpful. Nicely done video! I didn't have to lift the engine like others had suggested and I have reasonably big hands. The key was the magnetic 14 mm thin wall magnetic spark plug socket with a swivel on the end (Amazon Workpro model W074528AE). The clear camera angles helped me see exactly how to unclip the electrical harness without damage and how to remove the coils and plugs. I also like the tool inventory at the beginning. Keep up the good work !

Great job! Had the P0305 and P0304 engine code. Figured I would check the spark plugs first. My car's engine is the 3.0 H6 . You prepared a work of art video on the topic and it showed pretty much same configuration as the 3.0. No other video matched my situation but yours. And it happened to be one of the best video instructions I have ever seen. Thank you so much for the attention to details and quality of images. Boy that was a tight fit... whoever designed the amount of clearance for spark plugs install must have come from another world.
I have the a 2018 Outback 3.6R and it's time for new plugs. You have been so helpful as I was ready to jack the car and go under. Your tool tips are spot on! If you wobble too much and break a plug off, you are done.
I did this job on my 2010 h6 eight years ago at 60k and it’s due again now at 120k. I don’t remember it being too bad but I’m watching vids to get ready. Thanks!
So I knocked this out this morning, it took a little under three hours from hood open to starting the car. If the driver side rear plug had another inch of clearance it would have been a two hours job, what an absolute mess. Next due at 180,000 and I'm not sure I'll still have the car if it takes another 8 years. I initially tried to skip unplugging the coils which was a mistake, they have to be unplugged if you're to have any chance.
Wow, I've never had a mechanic take the time to reset the radio stations after disconnecting the battery. Good job, very instructive, my Subarus a little older but this should help.
Very well done! I watched a few videos in prep for changing the plugs in my Tribeca. Your vid had the clearest, steadiest shots of what needed to be done. Great explanation too. Thank you!

Great video! I have a Subaru Forester 4 cyl and there is a lot more room to get to spark plugs. Also, no one who ever removed my battery reset my radio station presets or set the clock. That is a wonderful touch of great customer service! Way to go!
For my 2018 2.5i outback I had to remove the driver side wheel to get to the two battery tray bolts on the side from underneath. I had to remove the belly pan and raise the engine jacking under the oil pan to get the driver side rear coil and plug out. Must use a wobbly socket on the plugs. Used a hose to screw plugs in and lift them out.

What a wonderful girl!! A great and informative set of vids - you explained It all very well Faye. I have here in Australia a 3.0R that is just as tight for room. Yes, I sat and looked for a long time considering 'down' or 'up'. Its not done yet. Just as well I have the same tools as you, even smaller, so should do the trick. I could do with your small hands though. Thanks a million.kind regards, take care. Roger Royal
Thank you Faye for these very informative videos. I am about to change the plugs on a 2016 Outback 3.6L. I do have a lift, do you think it will be an easier job from the bottom? Trying to use the lift for everything to justify the cost to my wife. ;) LOL
I usually do, but just very very little. I see anti seize lathered on in excess all the time, and that can actually do more harm than good. Just a super light application that doesn't touch the top two threads.
I think she wouldn't be posting a "how to" video if it involved using an engine jack... most of us don't keep one for the routine car maintenance. They are NEEDED if you want to do the rocker cover gaskets... or a 4 point lift.
Thanks a lot for the vídeo Faye ;) It helps a lot of People for sure! I will do it on my Legacy 2.5 and hope to have success too :) Greetings from Brazil !!!
Faye just how do you do this and stay so calm? Ever do a 95 Lebaron convertable timing belt on a 3 liter V6? Took me 3 months because I wasn't putting tentioner on right. There's a reason the oil pump has pin hanging out of it.
MixedBag I do not have an oil change video for this vehicle, but I actually change the oil the same time I did this service and it was nothing special at all. The oil filter and the oil drain plug are in almost identical locations, you should have no trouble!!
You don't *have* to, but it makes it so much easier. And it isn't a memory saver, (most newer vehicle have that function built in actually!!) it's some funky device that makes your battery last longer.... 🤔 I removed everything and the clock didn't even need to be reset!
Faye, do you know if this would apply to a 2006 Tribeca B9?? I just ask because today I did the passenger side from underneath the vehicle and it was a nightmare, ha-- doing the drivers side tomorrow and wondering if from up top might be better.
Got a video one the 2017 (5th gen) outback 3.6R transmission flush? TR690? I can drain /fill, but I kinda wanted to pump out via the cooler. I'm like 50/50 on taking off the cooler hoses near the front of the car on the mini transmission cooler. Not sure what fluid is in there, if it is cvt or coolant and already exchanged. Hence my hesitation.
Thank you for the feedback! As I stated in this video, having small hands helps quite a bit. If you watched my video, you'll see I had no issues performing this job without taking the extra step that you are recommending, and time is money! This is a good tip for someone without the tooling that I have, or someone with big hands or big arms. Thanks for the comment!
Not sure here, but what happens to plugs when you keep them in past their service interval? If the car doesn't burn oil, or run rich to foul the plug, why change them? Just curious.

Yes, I sat and looked for a long time considering 'down' or 'up'. Its not done yet. Just as well I have the same tools as you, even smaller, so should do the trick. I could do with your small hands though. Thanks a million.kind regards, take care. Roger Royal
tihs video helped alot but all you need is a spark plug socket and a 3 inch extension. small hands help
great video. thanks. However, I wouldn't want to do a head gasket job on this engine!
Hi Faye, thanks for the video! my question is, how long did this job take to do?
Thank you Faye for these very informative videos. I am about to change the plugs on a 2016 Outback 3.6L. I do have a lift, do you think it will be an easier job from the bottom? Trying to use the lift for everything to justify the cost to my wife. ;) LOL
Excellent job, this couldn’t have been explained any better, thank you
Awesome thanks I needed a very straight forward method. Thanks!!
Love the Texas sounds wind, cicadas, doves, and mockingbirds in defense mode. 😁
Wow, great video. Saving me a boatload compared to having the dealer do it.
Quick question: do you recommend antiseize for the plug threads?
I usually do, but just very very little. I see anti seize lathered on in excess all the time, and that can actually do more harm than good. Just a super light application that doesn't touch the top two threads.
Thanks for the practical video with practical tools. Some of these videos are just way too long.
You can try and removing the motor mount nut off the bottom side and jacking the motor up a bit to tilt the engine to access those plugs a bit easier
I will do it on my Legacy 2.5 and hope to have success too :) Greetings from Brazil !!!
;)
Wow little skilled hands there great for Subaru boxer engine work you are rarer then wooden rocking horse ***t keep up the great work on videos
Faye just how do you do this and stay so calm? Ever do a 95 Lebaron convertable timing belt on a 3 liter V6? Took me 3 months because I wasn't putting tentioner on right. There's a reason the oil pump has pin hanging out of it.
I love watching your videos they or helpful when I work.on cars
Nice. Do you have an oil change diy for 3.6r legacy or is it pretty much the same? Great info going to change the sparks today
MixedBag I do not have an oil change video for this vehicle, but I actually change the oil the same time I did this service and it was nothing special at all. The oil filter and the oil drain plug are in almost identical locations, you should have no trouble!!
@@FayeHadley 7 quarts of oil! I forgot to check specs before I purchase normal 5 quarts. LOL
The location of the spark plug is beyond belief. The engineers must be drunk when they designed this.
This helped so so much. Thank you for everything!
Awesome!!!😃👍🏻
Great video dude. I appreciate this so much
So you need to remove the battery - is that a memory saver device I see? Presumably you need a memory saver to prevent computer loss settings, right?
You don't *have* to, but it makes it so much easier. And it isn't a memory saver, (most newer vehicle have that function built in actually!!) it's some funky device that makes your battery last longer.... 🤔 I removed everything and the clock didn't even need to be reset!
@@FayeHadley solid! Thank you!
Faye, do you know if this would apply to a 2006 Tribeca B9?? I just ask because today I did the passenger side from underneath the vehicle and it was a nightmare, ha-- doing the drivers side tomorrow and wondering if from up top might be better.
If I had a lift would it make the task easier?
Got a video one the 2017 (5th gen) outback 3.6R transmission flush? TR690? I can drain /fill, but I kinda wanted to pump out via the cooler. I'm like 50/50 on taking off the cooler hoses near the front of the car on the mini transmission cooler. Not sure what fluid is in there, if it is cvt or coolant and already exchanged. Hence my hesitation.
Way easier if you remove the motor mount nut and jack the engine up one side at a time.Just a tip.
Great video faye keep it up!
Not sure here, but what happens to plugs when you keep them in past their service interval? If the car doesn't burn oil, or run rich to foul the plug, why change them? Just curious.
Great video, in my book.
Thank you!
Thanks! Fantastic video.
I have a 2016 3.6R outback. Before I remove the battery, can I get away without using a battery memory saver or should I get one?
@Faye Hadley would this be easier (I have the 2015 Outback 3.6) from under the car?
Thank you for the insight, 😁👍
I think you'll find working from the bottom easier.
which size is spark plug diameter ?
So if the dealer charges $399, how much did you charge?
Great job…thanks
Much rather watch a goog looking woman wrenching on vehicles than men! Keep on with awesome videos
WOW!! No blood and no dropped bolts!
Thanks!
Can’t help but think it would be easier coming up from underneath.??
If you're on a lift, yes!! If I'm a driveway on the ground, nooooooo
So jealous of your small hands😂😂😂
omg marry me. you made my life easy
Do you think the Engineers really care about service. Wouldn't a head gasket be absolute Hell
