The suit cares more about its life than gordons
Well if the suit malefunctions it could end up damaging the User, the HEV suit propably uses the high pitch to warn the user of the emergency Shutdown that may occur and when the suit is offline no one can repair your wounds. Or it warns the User of an malefunction that is caused by heat which could result in the suit killing the User.

This just shows how many details orginal Half Life had back in the 90s.
It was truly a milestone in gaiming desing.
Boster17503 It had too many details than modern games today.
Boster17503 - there are some leaked Alpha Builds (the leak made Valve to change the whole thing again) of Half Life 2 that featured some interesting details as well. Some important ones as well. For example a giant portal facility that drained ocean water into the combine realm to get the minerals and the water itself from it which explains why several meters/whatever of water are missing everywhere and channels being dry. Pretty lazy that they kept the significantly lower ocean level but didn't bother to explain. Also it showed some heavily intoxicated areas human workers had to wear gas masks. And it showed human workers at all. The final build gave no explanation why the combine overlords bothered to "keep" humans and some infrastructure. They are just sitting around in City 17 in the final build. Originally they were portrayed as forced labour force.
Oliver Kurzweg- They also planned for a Manhack Arcade, where citizens could play a game where you kill people and earn points but you were actually controlling real manhacks and killing people.

That would be fair if there was some stronger stuff like fentanyl whose effects go off just about half hour after peak concentration. Morphine lasts about 30 hours, so a bit of inaccuracy there.

It is, speaking from experience, almost painless (itself, not an injury that caused it) and results may vary from no symptoms except slow coloration of affected body part days later, to extreme fatigue and sudden death due to blood pressure drop.

If blood leaks out of your blood vessels, whether it’s external, or internal, that blood will no longer be apart of the circulatory system, and can’t be transported to where it’s needed most. And no, if blood leaks on to an organ while internally bleeding, that organ won’t absorb it.

Sci-fi at its best. The suit's voice is pretty to the point. Just as it should be...it is not an ornamental piece of a casual game, it is there to render the world more realistic. Just listen to its extremely factual style of voice...just like doctors and paramedics. No time to sugarcoate the facts, the suit provides an immediate and precise reading without compromise..it is ther to save the user. I get Fallout vibes here btw.
Someone should make a lore friendly power armor with similar but not exact sorta thing as the hev. if only I knew how or had the time to learn

The pitch can be adjusted in the sentences.txt file, where all the game dialogues are defined. My guess is that since the heat damage warning is cut they stopped adjusting their pitch value to be uniform with the rest.

For me, it looks like you would put on a gas mask, a balaclava over it, and then odd substance would form on both visors and breathing parts of gas mask so you cannot see nor breathe. Now what the icon is supposed to actually represent, and what does it have to do with nerve gas, I have no clue, but it does look kinda disturbing, I'll admit it.
DaxMarko 1337 It's supposed to be a gas mask, the HEV suit notices the nerve gas in the air, and puts up the symbol to show that you should equip a gas mask before entering.
I am going to assume that it is not actually _nerve gas_, per se, but instead mustard gas or tear gas.
Nerve gas is almost always lethal, if Gordon was actually in nerve gas, he would be unable to get out, at least it would be very difficult.
Kleneu66 Maybe it was made so it could paralyze the player, but it was either too op or not very fun, and making it not paralyze the player ruins the whole point of nerve gas, so they just removed the paralyzing part, but left icon and HEV response inside script. Which is why it now acts like generic damage type.

@@patrickw.4422 Very few domestic dogs get rabies. Even when it comes to stray dogs, a rather small percent of them gets infected (rabies has been nearly eradicated in most of the world). But all dogs' mouths are full of bacteria and if you get bitten and the wound is sufficiently deep, a bacterial infection is almost inevitable if one doesn't have it cleaned by doctors. And even then they will likely prescribe you antibiotics. Human mouths are full of bacteria too, but we don't bite each other often :D
P.S. Rabies does kill many dogs and many people in some areas (India is one example), but in many others there haven't been cases of rabies in people and domestic animals for decades. But when one has had a vicious encounter with any animal, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Even though they're just videos looking at somewhat minor features of the HL games.... damn is it still somehow interesting. The HEV suit also really helped set in the atmosphere.... it was like your only friend throughout most of the game... well the suit, as well as your huge arsenal of weapons.

The Nerve Gas icon is used in Counter Strike, the de_survivor map has it when you fall inside the thin ice. The icon scared the crap out of me as a kid, i thought the mouth was bare teeth and the eyes were being pulled out or something. Turns out that's supposed to be a gasmask. What the hell does it have to do with freezing temperatures?

Counter-Strike 1.6 seems to have broken hud sometimes, showing incorrect icons. For me, the radiations is shown as 02, the oxygen icon.

Originally the HEV Suit was going to talk to you a LOT more, which is why some of these are unused. (It was removed because playtesters found it annoying)

Valve is very efficient when it comes to design it seems, they get a story done, and fit the gameplay around playtests, which most wouldn't even notice these behaviors, otherwise if you made a stealth game where players could behaviors and really become fond of them, maybe it would become necessary to create these systems.

To be more precise, the "nerve gas" icon shows up on your HUD when you're infected by the Medic's medkit.
I like that they went with this idea. It makes the damage you receive seem more realistic in a way. Too bad they didn't go the extra mile with the antidote, it would be awesome that your suit would actually heal you in a way.
Certainly helped justify the insane risks Freeman ends up taking, such a simple inclusion makes the furthest stretched part of the plot seem, well, pretty reasonable, actually.
It's all about the finer details.

An old comment mentioned that Freeman is constantly high on morphine the whole game and a reply to that comment came up to the theory that there were never any aliens, only scientists that were trying to pry him out of the suit but he was too high on morphine so they called in the military, only for Gordon to finally be stopped at the rocket launch site and be taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, he's still hallucinating and thinks he's on an alien planet.
The nerve gas icon is used in Counter-Strike. As an example, on the map de_survivor if you fall in the freezing water the icon will appear. I think you can experience the same on de_torn, but I'm not 100% sure. Really good and informative video.

Nah, they _did_ stop adjusting the pitch, but not in sentences.txt. They just replaced the audio files when they realised the pitch was too high, and didn't bother wasting time on cut material.
Mabye the heat damage is higher pitched because heat is harmful to electronics, so is the electrical damage warning. Makes sense to me.
They made her pitch higher again in _Black Mesa_ , much to everyone's irritation (yet they haven't changed it back despite it being annoying and pointless). I wonder if they just used the same method mfaizsyahmi. mentions.

The creepiest thing is the HEV suit zombies where the suit will sometimes say "user death immenent" but horribly broken or sometimes just corrupted voice clips.

(Recomment, cause I deleted it) So in HL2, if a poison headcrab bites you, it leaves you at 1 health, but thanks to HEV MK V, it administers you *ANTIDOTE* that refills your health back to ~90.

The reason why your health doesn't go all the way to 100% is because of the headcrab's physical damage.

Digging further into the fvox files, there was full support for hostile detection, navigation (North, South, etc) and time of day/date lines.
It probably has OwO detection as well.
I remember playing team fortress and hearing the hev suit voice give the current time every 30 mins and also announce the remaining match time, I think in the chat you would use 'thetime' for the current time and 'timeleft' to get the current time left. I liked it

This line is known and was deliberately excluded for the sake of brevity. It plays in the fairly uncommon scenario of taking time-based damage while between 50 and 75 health. There were many time-based damage effects planned for the game, but most of them were disabled in the final release.

'disabled for the final game'? Do you know if there are any retail maps with disabled trigger brushes?
All of the possible trigger_hurt damage types are still functional, but the ones that were meant to have time-based damage effects simply lack them now, rendering them as essentially normal damage types. The one exception is Poison, referred to in this video as Poisonous Biohazard, which still possesses time-based damage.
I think "Vital signs are dropping" may occur when player is drowning.
It is also used in Half-Life 2

so in conclusion, the suit doesn’t actually protect you all that much, it just tells you “oh shit, you’re like, really fucked here.”
I believe it does give protection. I dont know from what but maybe if gordon didnt have the suit he would die in one shot. Maybe its one of those games.
It is good against bullets, but it is shown in half life Alyx that it is not so durable, you can see multiple wear and tear in the suit, including scratches, gun shot wounds, dents, etc, this could also be due to the fact that it is basically decades old.

there's really not much of a way that cosmetic damage makes sense unless canonically gordon went through all of hl & hl2 only being shot a couple times
Even without any armor charge it protects you way more than not having it. Not to mention the antitoxin (in the case of poison headcrabs), morphine and adrenaline shots it administers.
It can't protect against everything.
It seems as more the HEV voice gets farther into the types of damaging it gets more worried lol.

The HEV suit alone explains away so many little "quirks" like "How can Gordon Freeman survive so much and still act like nothing happened" or "How are Houndeyes hurting me with their screaming and producing little rings of light"

See, it's stuff like this that so few games do, but it adds so much to the game's world. All you really need is a little damage indicator popping up to show you taking damage, but adding in the little icons and HEV voice creates depth. It says "You're not wearing your typical body armor, you're wearing a suit designed for working in extreme and dangerous environments. This suit is necessary to survive tests and work around radiation or chemicals." It separates you from pretty much all the other guys in "power armor" because yours isn't for fighting, it's for work, and it just so happens that it holds up against bullets.
I like how sometimes the voice sounds super panicked. For example, WARNING! EXTREME HEAT DAMAGE DETECTED. EMERGENCY! USER DEATH IMMINENT!

half life 1 feels bigger than half life 2 tbh.
Yup, the AI also feels superior to the one in 2, which was supposed to be good as seen in E3 demo but was cut.
it really does, and it's sad, half life 2 may stil be a great game, but it had what seems like 80% of content cut out, and it feels like a hollow game at many, many points, HL2 lacks alot and it feels like something is missing in every little part of the game

It's an above ground shockwave of sorts, most memorable thing about it for me was the fact that they cut it from the Black Mesa remake.
It was never that much of a threat.
I remember it killing me instantly the first time, probably because i stood still looking at it
If I remember correctly, it deals 60 dmg if you walk into it and one-hit kills you if you stay still.

One of the most memorable aspects of this game, I think. Different damage types, and the suit giving you medical advice (that you can never take) after each one. Just absolutely nothing like it before, and it added so much atmosphere.
I thought the nerve gas icon was a gimp mask. If it was it would probably refer to “internal bleeding” if you see what I mean.
Regarding its actual meaning, I guess the main reason we never saw the Nerve Gas icon is because unless you count the Borealis (using a suit that phased out most of the visual warnings), no main Half Life game has ever taken place in Aperture Science.

I like to think of the HEV suits as being micro-environment suits in and of themselves. Makes more sense that they warn you of stuff like extreme heat or lacerations; if you're that insulated, it's possible you won't feel damage quickly enough to put yourself out of harm's way.
