  • THE MASK OF ZORRO THE MOVIE REACTION! Today I'll be watching a film I have never seen before The Mask of Zorro released in 1998 for the first time. Here's my Mask of Zorro reaction. Want to watch the ENTIRE Movie with me? Check out: / timotheereacts
    After being imprisoned for 20 years, Zorro -- Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) -- receives word that his old enemy, Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), has returned. Don Diego escapes and returns to his old headquarters, where he trains aimless drunk Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) to be his successor. Meanwhile, Montero -- who has secretly raised Diego's daughter, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), as his own -- hatches a plot to rob California of its gold.

    Puss in Boots was based off of Zorro. The original fables of Puss in Boots do date back to before Zorro, but the version of him in the Shrek movies is VASTLY different from the original. When they were making Shrek 2, it's clear that they already had Antonio Banderas for the role and based him off of Zorro as a joke to the audience.

    • @DrRush-ow4qg
      @DrRush-ow4qg ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It’s interesting that what started as a clever joke eventually became equal to what it was parodying and far greater than the original fairy tale.

    • @AirQuotes2962

      @@DrRush-ow4qg Exactly! I heard the original French/Italian fairy tale and it kinda sucked. But the version specifically in The Last Wish is one of the greatest things I've ever seen. It still hasn't beat out the original Zorro, but it is on the same level.

    What I think this film absolutely nails is Alejandro's character development. We see the seeds planted with him admiring Zorro as a kid, to him being a drunken thief, a gifted but cocky rookie, a charming spy, and finally a hero of the people.
    One of my favorite bits from this film is when he gets pissed off at Diego for trying to get Elena back instead of helping the people.
    "What about California? What about the people?!"
    "They still have Zorro."
    Alejandro has come full circle, he finally puts the people over himself. Diego even sees this and knows he's now officially Zorro.

    The reason why there are so many similarities between Zorro and batman is because batman was very largely inspired by Zorro. There are many references to Zorro in batman media like the animated series.

    This is how Zorro should be, a mixture of humour, action and fun.
    The problem here is that these days most actors are not willing to do the training necessary. The acrobatics, the fencing and everything? Even if you have stuntmen, they still have to do a lot by themselves.
    It also needs teachers that know what they are doing. An unsung hero of Hollywood was Robert James Gilbert Anderson (1922-1912) who did the fight choreography for movies like Highlander (1986), The Three Musketeers (1993), The Princess Bride (1987), The Mask of Zorro (1998), The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003), and James Bond: Die Another Day (2002) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). He was also Darth Vader during the lightsaber fight scenes in Star Wars A new hope, The Empire strikes back and Return of the Jedi. He also worked as an actor and stunt coordinator. He was often uncredited for his work.

      Bob Anderson was first hired in 1953 as stunt double for Errol Flynn in "The Master of Ballantrae". In training he hurt Flynn. Although the actor admitted it was his own fault, Anderson was called "The Man who stabbed Errol Flynn."

    Zorro has always been one of my favorite characters of all time, whether it played by both of these great actors, or by Guy Williams on the old Disney series. Even Tyrone Powers did him well. Did you know that the idea for Batman was based on the old Zorro novels and movies?

      A whole lot of modern popular fictional heros trace back to the original Zorro stories (way before this Antonio Bandera movie)
      Batman for instance is a retake of the Zorro story (and in many versions his parents are killed while out to see a Zorro film)

    So I'm pretty sure when they cast Banderas as Puss in Boots they did it because of Zorro
    this is such an underrated film though, Zorro being an iconic comic character spanning over a century. Charming and swashbuckling, a lot of what Zorro did also set the template for Batman (in fact, in some origins the movie young Bruce watches before his parents are killed is a Zorro movie), Banderas is perfect for the role too, and it is a nice little origin/passing of the torch movie. Particularly like the music they play when Zorro stabs Captain Love too
    Fun fact: Banderas trained with the Spanish Olympic Fencing team for four months to prep for Zorro, he also trained with Bob Anderson, who had trained Errol Flynn (another legendary swashbuckling actor), who called him the most gifted swordsman he's trained since Flynn.

    Zorro was created in 1919 by Johnston McCully. Zorro is one of the main inspirations for Batman along with the pulp magazine character The Shadow and Sherlock Holmes. Batman was created by Bob for & Bill Finger Detective Comics #27, 1939 exactly 20 years after Zorro first appearance.

    I love Zorro, every year i go back to 2 Zorro movies.........
    The Mask Of Zorro and Zorro the Gay Blade
    Both movies are a fun watch with Zorro TGB being more comedic then Mask but George Hamilton also plays a perfect Zorro. Funny enough both Antonio Banderas and George Hamilton were nominated for Golden Globes for both of their portrayals as Zorro. A definite watch if you keep watching Zorro movies after Legend.

    Thank you for this reaction! Antonio Banderas was amazing! I was in a musical production when I was playing Pancho Villa and I watched these films to study their dialect. Catherine Zeta-Jones was both lovely and fierce! I used to wish they would have made a video game where you play as various characters in a sword duel. I can’t wait for your reaction to The Legend of Zorro! Here are other Antonio Banderas films: Uncharted, Doolittle, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Take the Lead, and he’ll be in the new upcoming film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. ⚔️🔥🖤❤️‍🔥

    A curious fact is that "El zorro" was the way the spaniards called to don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla who was the "father of independence" of Mexico, because for a long time the spanish soldiers couldn't get him. He was a "criollo" priest (son of spanish fathers that were born in spain but he was born in México) and he was fed up with how the "peninsulares" (spaniards born in Spain) treated criollos, mestizos and indigenous people, so he called the population to rebel against the spanish monarchy. Though, he never made it to the North of the country (California in this case in the movie) he was captured in Jalisco then he was excommunicated, shot and beheaded and his head was displayed in Guanajuato for years so anybody wouldn't dare to rebel against the spaniards. Though there were another followers of don Miguel who later on allowed México to be an "independent country". With this in context we're talking about 1810's and México became a free country in 1821. Then shit happened and México lost the Californias in 1848 and its other territories. Don Miguel Hidalgo was long dead by then.

    You have it backwards. Puss in Boots is based on Zorro. So Zorro is NOT a live action Puss in Boots, but PiB is a cartoon of Zorro.

    • @riel4553
      @riel4553 ปีที่แล้ว

      As in, the look that Dreamworks gives Puss in Boots, yeah it's based on Zorro. But Puss in Boots the character is way older.

    • @jamesmarciel5237
      @jamesmarciel5237 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@riel4553 true, however it is pretty much only in name as traditional depictions of Puss in boots are traditionally shown/illustrated with more of a European look where as the depiction of PiB in Shrek (to which the title is referring) was more based on Zorro. This was also a major reason why his outfit was changed from his usual depictions to an all black one and why Antonio Banderas was pursued to play this version.
      Also the writers and producers have explicitly stated that the character is only inspired by the fairytale version and his depiction and subsequent films are not adaptations of the fairy tale.
