I Tried a World Record Bay Area Transit Speedrun

- I attempted to break the world record time for BART Speedruns. That's visiting every single one of the 50 BART stations as fast as possible. But, I did it for a reason you might not expect.

As a Bay Area resident, this felt like a personalized version of Jet Lag: the Game. Great work Adam, loved it!
Thank you! That means a lot!
agreed
lol when I clicked on this I thought it was Adam from Jet Lag: The Game because it was a transit based game and the channel name was "Adam" lol
Same lol😂
Hi! I'm one of the Berkeley Students who broke the record earlier this year. Thank you for mentioning us and giving a brief history of BART Speedrunning! Tomo and our group actually managed to find the same route separately, and we did know about Tomo's faster route but felt it was too risky with Guinness World Record's strict requirements requiring witnesses-as you saw the Oakland Airport Connector is really tight! I really enjoyed your video though, and thank you for showing everyone the wonders of BART :)
Wow! The legend! I had to include you, your group, and Tomo because I never would have done this without all of you. So, thank you! It's crazy how documenting the record can interfere with breaking the record itself!
I can't believe that a community of BART speedrunners exists lol thank you youtube algorithm for showing me this
Neither could I! If you're interested in the Details you'd love Tomo's videos.
Doing this on a Saturday when the trains aren’t running as often is wild
My first attempt was on a Sunday. Didn't work out...
not anymore afaik except for the cut-short pitts-bp yellow trains
Was just gonna say that ! 😅 try on a weekday when they’re running every 20 min instead of longer on weekends
Hey! I'm Enzo/Catz, the world record holder along with tomo tawa linja (Sabi) and this was really cool to watch! Here are some comments I have.
0:28 The current WR is 5:30:26, not 5:30:16
3:50 Being a few minutes late into Dublin, or any terminus for that matter is normal. The turnaround times may just be cut short to prevent the next cycle from departing late.
4:07 Now isn't exactly the best time to speedrun. The stretch between Dublin and West Dublin has been undergoing some maintenance recently, causing single-tracking and delays.
7:45 I actually found the route while looking for possible OAK skips, but I reached out to Sabi (their pronouns are not he/him) as I thought it would be cool that they could reclaim their WR from the TRANSOC group! Unfortunately, they have moved away from the Bay Area and have spoken to me about 'retiring' from future WR attempts.
8:30 The reason actually isn't only because of the distance - Berryessa has a horrid 10-minute turnaround time, while Antioch has E-BART, making them nearly mandatory to start/end at. If you want, I'd love to discuss my strategies for finding new routes and the things I've learned along the journey with you!
13:05 Fun Fact! During our WR run, I actually had to use the bathroom. If you watch our live streams back, during our 8-minute turnaround time at Richmond I was able to sprint to the bathroom and back up before leaving the station.
14:14 Yes! The schedules have finally changed! I have already made multiple 5:10:xx routes, with Caltrain Electrification and without it.
14:35 The trains look much nicer but IMO the E-BART stretch falls far behind the rest of the BART system. They could have done much more with it.
Great video! Once again, I'd love to contact you to discuss the speedrunning history of BART! Let me know if you want to.
edit: a few things to clear up some of the comments on this video
- "not leaving the BART system" is not a rule for speedrunning any transit system. There are actually 2 unofficial categories of speedrunning transit: "any%" and "full completion (fc)". Any% refers to using any methods to reach points of interest in the particular system that you are speedrunning, however, you must either enter or exit a station on the system by a vehicle that the system operates. This also permits bus bridges or other non-mainline-BART infrastructure such as E-BART or OAK Connector.
- Taking Caltrain (from Mountain View via VTAlr or from Diridon via Rapid 500) is completely impossible. Trust me, I and many of my transit friends have already looked deep into any possibilities of going up or down the peninsula on a Baby Bullet and they all fall short by quite a lot.
- Yes, Caltrain can and more than likely will be used if I or anyone else ever improves this run from 5:30 to 5:10. This is due to the fact that you actually HAVE to start at Berryessa and end at Antioch (to get a blue -> blue OAK skip), and because BART trains operate every 20 minutes. To save any meaningful time off 5:30 going from these start/end points, you must improve the time in increments of 20 minutes. This is also why Adam's run was 5:50:xx, 20 minutes slower than the 5:30:xx.
- Like I noted earlier, using the bathroom is more feasible than you might think. You can do this at any station with a decently long turnaround time/transfer.
- It's not just BART! Many transit systems around the world have speedruns for them, including the DC Metro, international destinations like Sao Paulo, and much more.
edit 2: noticed some more things
- Major changes to the map (such as new stations opening, new lines opening, extensions, etc.) will result in a closure of speedrun history as the records are reset. This means that after the Diridon extension, for example, is implemented, the current 5:30:26 WR will have been archived into the past and any new records (slower or faster than 5:30:26) will not compete with the current one.
- Wheels 70x from PHILL/WCREEK to Dublin isn't fast enough. There is simply no reason for anyone to need to take this bus, as you would still need to cover both the entire blue line and the entire yellow line. On top of this, an OAK skip is necessary to even compete for the record, which the 70x's schedule disallows. The combination of the 5 trips a day service along with the nature of a BART speedrun makes this unviable.
- The OAK Connector does indeed not have a timetable schedule. However, if you go to the official bart.gov website and search for either the Coliseum or OAK stations, it will tell you a list of departure times for the people-mover train as well as the blue, orange, and green departures. Headways are 8 minutes (not the 9 listed on the website), with a 1-minute turnaround time, and then another 8 minutes going back. This makes for a trip time of 17 minutes, fitting right in between the 20-minute headways of duplicate blue-lines.
That's so cool! I'd love to chat. I've got an email in my profile. I've been wondering who the other person in Tomo's video was! 5:10 is an unbelievable improvement! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for reaching out.
this is a pleasant surprise :> would love to see you two discuss BART speedrunning "tech" lol
It's nice to see one of the winners here! And it's interesting to know that now the record could be beaten again thanks to Caltrain electrification
he*
hello Horus_The_Local
as someone who commuted to Millbrae from Oakland for years - the wait for the red line gave me PTSD
Wow. I really really feel that!
I feel like "not leaving the BART system" isn't a rule. In any speedrun of world-class transit, there may be a sneaky beaky out-of-system transfer, such as taking a bus between two line termini stations. As long as you pass through every station on a BART train (not walking/bussing past), that to me is sufficient.
I see a future where speedruns involve taking Caltrain between Millbrae and Santa Clara.
There's a LONG list of rules, and I'm pretty sure you're right, that's not one of them. But I think it makes it more fun. The problem with Caltrain to Mountain View is that you then have to take to orange line light rail to Milpitas, then go south Berryessa, then back north. I took the orange line in another transit video. It's painfully slow for something like this I'm afraid.
you can take the 70x bus between pleasanton and walnut creek
@AdamDoesNotExist with the planned BART terminus at Diridon station the Caltrain skip to loop the South Bay would be a big change to the speedrun meta
Sydney All Stations runs only allow Trains and Metro which I think is ridiculous especially considering big gaps like Tallawong-Schofields. They should adopt tube challenge rules but a lot of the community are used to the old ruleset.
It is like a glitchless vs glitch allowed speedrun.
Could probably run between some of the downtown SF stations before another train even comes if you time it right.
I chuckled when the doors opened on the side you weren't expecting them to. Relatable xD
i love that bart runs on saturday! i take it all the time and took it that very sunday
Cool! It is a great service
LOVE more Bay Area transit content!
Glad to hear it!
Here is a challenge do all the stops on the San Jose Light Rail.
@@eddog6666 You could make a fun little speedrun out of those VTA lines!
I'm coming here from an interesting perspective because not only have I been one of the main viewers during the world record livestream of this system, but I also set a transit speedrun record myself of the Portland MAX system! tomo tawa linja is definitely the best source of what to do to best optimize these routes as is who I used for my record, so I'm glad that you mentioned them in this video. And besides all of that this is a great video to watch and enjoy your vibe 💜
Cool video! It's nice that there are timed transfers on BART that you can at least somewhat rely on when planning a run. I tried speedrunning the DC Metro, but the transfer times just varied too much from their scheduled times. Looks like that was some good ice cream at the end!
Ah DC metro. Certainly a completely different system than BART. And yes some of the best ice cream I've ever had!
Yeah, if there's not crazy delays then the trains will actually watch and wait for people to make the transfers
Congrats on the 10k! Here’s to the 100k! 🍻
Thank you! You know that means so much!
Back in the Pleistocene when I was between temp jobs but had to leave the house, I'd ride BART from Daly City to Concord or Fremont (the end stations at the time) but for some reason not Richmond. It was a fun diversion - no record-attempts - and a couple of the train operators were quite pleasant to watch.
Great video! My favorite part was you doing my exact line at the start. Baryessa to Dublin. Ive done that connection many times now. you got lucky, i have to wait upwards of 10 minutes for my bayfair connections
Thank you! I. think that's one of the connections that they changed on Monday so I believe it should be a bit better now.
I moved down to the LA area a couple years ago and this made me deeply homesick. And also now I'm wondering if there's a similar speedrun for the LA Metro
You could totally speed run the LA metro! It would probably take twice the time give the size, and I'd say skip the rail only rule given the layout. Hopefully it didn't make you too homesick, you're welcome back up here any time!
regular train reviews did this a bit back
I used to fall asleep on late trains from Oakland towards Concord. Waking up stuck in Pittburg... sucked.
The first few times I fell asleep on the Seoul subway, I freaked out. Fortunately the distances between stations is much shorter, taxis were common near most transit stations, and places to crash for the night (sauna/spa/jjimjilbang) are always nearby.
Different systems have their quirks
I fell asleep once on a German Strassenbahn and woke up in the barn. You'd think they'd check the cars at the last station, but apparently not...
On weekdays, there's a sol trans bus that goes from walnut creek Bart to Davis. You can take Amtrak back and it's an interesting day trip
Oh that does sound like a fun one. Thanks!
I took that bus yesterday to go to Vacaville! Little did I know there was no return ride after 6 PM and ended up having to take an Uber back to Concord. I freaked out when Google Maps said the next ride back was late night Sunday (tonight).
👋 from Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Center!
Thanks for stopping by!
OMG!! SAME
same
Really enjoy your videos! Love the fact that you’re a Bay Area local as well. Keep up the great work Adam!!!
Instant cool points for the stop at Lottie’s 🎉❤
BART content is always great to see! Awesome video!
Much appreciated!
This was a fun one!! Got to see a lot of stations i've never been to before!! Bart can be wonderfully beautiful and theres never a dull moment with what you get to see while riding either!! Hope you enjoyed ur speed run attempt!!
It was a fun adventure! I still can't believe how different each place is. The Bay as a region is so diverse in so many ways. We're lucky!
Agreed on wanting more BART content! I took the Antioch line just yesterday (Oakland to Concord) and the scenery is beautiful. The ride can get boring and long though but sometimes you do need a change of scenery from the chaos of the city. Greetings from the other side of the bay 😅
Yeah that's a long long line. But it's cool to go though the hills.
Really cool video! As a visitor to San Francisco, I always take BART from SFO to downtown (Powell Street). I love BART!
Thank you! BART is great!
Nice to know theirs a great ice cream shop about 5 minutes away from the crib! Love the Bay Area focus vids!
Lotties is so good. You have to try it.
I like Bart on 4th of July especially going through Oakland. At night it’s cool seeing the neighborhood fireworks. Probably not legal but still nice.
I live in Bay Area now. Watching you come here makes me feel great. Great job out there.
Awesome! Thank you!
I've seen a few of your videos and am so surprised you aren't huge. The editing, quality, ideas, and all elements are great.
Keep it up big man, you will break through soon
Thank you! It feels great to hear that. Part of it is I need to come up with better ideas/thumbnails/titles. But if I'm making videos that people in the Bay love, that's not so bad!
On the topic of 9-5 adventures, I've been eyeing a BART-->Ferry-->SMART to Sonoma airport-->Bus-or-something jaunt around the East/North Bay. Might be cool to film something similar.
That mile to the BART station is such a barrier to entry on a weekend morning though
I actually have done something really similar. th-cam.com/video/r-wa-Q9tmXE/w-d-xo.html great minds...!
sweet video! makes me want to see if i can do a speedrun like this in my area
Go for it!
I love how you're showing the bay area and its positivities! (though bart is pretty dirty and San Bruno bart station is absolutely dead with 80% of customers hopping in from tanforan lmao)
There is so much positive here, I wish you saw more of that on the news!
@@AdamDoesNotExist people act like BART is some dystopian hellscape
Dude, where is BART dirty? Does this look dirty to you? 10:29
Looks like you haven't been on BART in a while. It's much better now.
@@TohaBgood2 probably went on after it got cleaned. The seats were gray with drug influenced people on the train when I went on. If it's much better than that's happy to hear
@@小粒 I have been riding BART a lot lately. It's generally very clean.
When was the last time that you rode it?
I enjoy watching your videos! I take public transportation now cause of these videos.
Also the history of certain parts of San Francisco were really interesting. Maybe you could do more of those for other parts of the bay area. Maybe San Jose of parts of the peninsula.
Again Great Videos!!!
Seriously? You really started taking public transit because of me?!
I've done some videos on the peninsula, atherton, and colma. But I really just don't know it as well. I've only been to San Jose a few times. That said I do have some thoughts...
@@AdamDoesNotExist I’m península born and raised so I’ve never been to Oakland/Berkeley area but your videos are making me want to go explore out there especially using BART.
Lots of people here are saying “hey I recognize that station” but all I’m thinking is “hey we have the same backpack!” I use my räven 28 every day. 10/10 backpack.
I bought it a few months the day I left for Europe and it's turned out great! I wish the back had a bit more ventilation, but the materials are great, and the organization is perfect.
@@AdamDoesNotExist Interesting, I’ve never had a problem with the back ventilation, and I’ve taken it hiking before. Maybe I’m just not the biggest sweater in the world lol
@@Leslie_AF Yeah I'm on the other end of that spectrum haha
It’s so surreal to watch a TH-cam video that takes place where I grew up
Sick vid man! Inspired to try the LA version haha
I figured the round-the-bay speedrun was just gonna be a one off, but turns out that was just our introduction to the Bay area's travel speedrunning scene lol. Very curious to see what you have in store next 🙌🏾hopes to breaking the record next time ‼️
Thank you! I've been wanting to do both of those for a long time! I've got some other transit Ideas, but still trying to decide what comes next!
Lotties ice cream makes it all worth it. im basic but their vanilla bean is SO good
I'm partial to a lot of stuff in my ice cream, but the base ice cream at Lotties is so good. You really can't go wrong.
Keep it up with the Bay Area content Adam! Loving it from Texas. If I was in the Bay then I would've loved to create content with you!
Thank you!!!!
Very nice, i used to live in Antioch, I've been to all the stops myself 😊
I listen to music and definitely have to take bathroom breaks.❤
Sounds like a much more fun way to do it!
@@AdamDoesNotExist I recently made a trip to Fresno, using Bart and Amtrak
The moral of the story....we need higher frequency trains? A win either way!
They do have some really cool plans for expanding. Would love to see it happen!
great video as always!
Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for the suggestion about ice cream in Walnut Creek, I should visit that area some day on BART.
Probably my favorite ice cream in the bay. There's one in Danville as well, but I haven't been.
I’ve always wanted to try Lottie’s Creamery, might go there this weekend. Greta vid btw, hello from Pleasant Hill.
Lol, that’s awesome. Used to ride BART all the time, been to most of these stations!
Thanks!
It's so cool to watch this growing up in WC and taking BART into the city almost every week. Also, Lottie's is about a 5-minute walk from me, and I definitely don't go there enough 😆
If I lived 5 minutes from Lotties, that would be really bad news. It might be the best ice cream anywhere.
Thanks for showing how to go to Oakland Airport transfer! I lived in the Bay my entire life and didn't know until now.
Glad it was helpful!
Seeing the bart I take home everyday is the starting point for all this kinda makes me kinda wanna do it!
Do it!
Nice music choice!
Thank you!
I can’t be a witness unless I see the full uncut video
This is probably my favorite channel.
Thank you!
0:16 - The Berryessa BART station! I live right next to it.
God I wish I knew about this speedrun when I lived in the Bay, maybe I could try it again when I come back
I was waiting at Balboa Park for the same transfer, and had to wait for the second train to get to colma just like you had to wait. And that was about a month earlier and the signs were out of order then too. I'd bet a lot of money nobody fixed them and they broke again. And I wouldn't be surprised if they're still broken 6 months from now.
Amazing video!!
Thank you!!
@@AdamDoesNotExist np!
This is freaking awesome I love it. My personla home station is millbrae and this is just amazing.
Wow, thanks!
I saw my house !! 🎉 I hate transfers , blue and green should be expanded to San Bruno and a new loop should be made with Millbrae and SFO with San Bruno
I think they're working towards expansion. Hopefully they make it happen!
Ur one of my fav TH-camrs now
Wow, thank you!
It is so weird seeing videos of Bart, like holy shit I know that place. I know that form of public transformation
Love seing high quality bart videos
Thank you!
All that for a single scoop!? You deserve two my guy!
You're totally right. I should have gotten more!
Good effort!
I couldn't do that, mainly for not being able to use the bathroom while running around the BART network. Would you have got in trouble if used the bathroom into a bottle in the corner of a BART train with nobody looking? Maybe not very wise, considering all the security cameras there are.
I'd much rather just suffer. If I had been thinking that time in Balboa would have been a great time for a pit stop.
@@AdamDoesNotExist Good luck if you try again. If it was me, I would map out any possible restrooms ahead of time, or I would burst. :/
great video!
Thanks!
BART must love taking the money of all these speedrunners lol
I remember seeing those “passenger pole dancers” on one of my trips when I rode the BART during my early-July 2024 Bay Area visit.
Standing on the platform in Richmond. OMG, last time I did that there were stray bullets flying past.
I feel like at least 15% of my mid 20s was spent waiting at Balboa Park lol
This is so pointless. I loved every minute.
A pointless journey with arbitrary made up rules. Glad you liked it!
You probably had 3rd Place which is not bad you earn a Brown Trophy my man
As someone that lives fairly close to the Berryessa Bart I kindof want to try this.
Keep an eye on the BART planned delays page! Probably the most annoying part was waking up at like 5 to start this at 8. Living near Berryessa is clutch.
Omg you're inspiring me to try this!
Go for it!
woo!
🤘
First good content creator that lives in the bay area
Thank you!
The yellow line is my train!!
love your vid keep it up
Thank you!
Just for your efforts, you got a subscriber in me👍🏻
Glad to have you here!
It’s even harder when you have to set up a tripod and fake running for the train.
hahaha. yup!
would’ve loved seeing you on a train that would’ve been so dope lol
Maybe one day!
Is there an Oakland airport connector schedule? Seems like it just goes back and forth but don’t try to keep a schedule. Seems like this can easily throw your run off by missing a train at Coliseum
Tomo's video explains this really well. There is a schedule, but there are only two trains. The schedule claims three. And you're right, it's the tightest two connections, and not really scheduled for it.
I used to love bart rides as a kid like 7 or 8 now I’m 13
w family man
🤘
This is some fun side quest😂🖐️
Thank you!
So weird seeing him just pass the city that I live in
Yay SF Bay Area!
Hello from Union City 👋🏻👋🏻
Hey there!
Now just need a good history video of Bart speedrunning. If you thinking what I’m thinking lol
That would be a cool one! BART has a website with a bunch of the history if you're curious. Google Bart speed run and it should come right up.
@@AdamDoesNotExist will definitely look it up
I wish the yellow went all the way to milbrae that would make my commute so much easier lol
you have peaked my interest
I've taken a train trip before just for an Ice Cream at the end but never anything that intense
I will admit, this was quite a bit over the top!
The SF goat is back
🫡
Ok but I’m assuming there’s gonna be asterisks with the old speedruns with “this was before X and Y stations opened” because BART is opening more stations
You're exactly right. Basically they freeze everything when a new station opens and start a new record book.
So fun
Close, just a few minutes off from delays. nice job though.
Thank you!
Nice try! Never have seen the end of every line.
Neither had I! It was cool!
~$41 isn't a bad deal for a day's adventure and ice cream
It's really not!
Lifelong bay resident. Never going to try this. My commute feels like 5:50 already
lotta RNG in this run
Aye shout out from pittsburg lol
Been there. Done that. I’ve taken the entire system myself. It’s an easy system to ride in a day, however, I noticed with every extension that opened, that my “day trips” started taking longer and longer, which meant I had to start earlier to avoid coming back home at night. Makes me wonder what’s going to happen when they get the final San Jose extension open… Will it still be possible to ride the whole system in a day?
Seeing people smoking crack isnt a rare occurrence on the blue line
