Sheeshhhh, all it takes is one video where some YTer (no iffense, I like your channel) makes a reference to Rolex and suddenly Casio is on the precipice of turning on its fans. 😄 😄
Great video. There is no doubt G-Shock is king of quartz in my mind. I enjoy searching for videos and models of the past which I like and appeal to me and what I want to collect - like the GW-A1100KH-3AJF. The JDM models specifically appeal to me. The G-shock catalogue is deep and has much to offer to any collector at any price point - far more than Rolex, imo.
Excellent video! I certainly agree about the limited edition watches and collaborations that’s all i personally collect I don’t like to wear mainstream g shock you see on everyone’s wrist. I like where g shock is heading and personally believe no watch brand compares to G-shock.
Honestly. Has me engaging with the site and searching them up more often. The special editions are probably why I have more than just two g shocks. And when they're usually at relatively more affordable prices than other luxury watches buying them is quite easy. I don't think most people in the G-Shock community care if they may not be as exclusive as other brands as the functionality and design matter more than exclusivity.
Yes, it's a conundrum maintaining the balance of accessibility and exclusivity. Brands like Rolex (or Grand Seiko) translate a utilitarian function into the sublime with amazing fit and finish; attention to detail that is OCD. I could not have thought that a G Shock of thousands of dollars was worth it and then I saw GMW-B5000TVA-1.
This raffle system is not unique to the frogman, sneaker companies have been using this method on popular shoes for years. this isn't a sign that g shock is turning into Rolex but rather g shock trying to get a somewhat rare watch into peoples hands fairly (if they disregard the bot entries). If g shock was turning into Rolex then you'd have to have bought ten other watches in order to be on the waitlist for this one.
Yes that is correct. I think I mentioned that in the video that it’s meant to cater to loyal fans like Rolex ADs do. But I have read somewhere that the MR-G square in one store requires you had prior purchase. I just could find that article anymore so I didn’t mention it in the video.
G-Shock keeps an abundant supply, overall. More like Seiko than Rolex. Their limited editions are a very small part of their total business and even the news of these doesn't reach casual G-Shock enthusiasts. You have to be plugged into 'the wire' to learn of their existence. As much as I wish I had a Kobe Fire Rangeman, I know that if I really wanted it, I could get hold of some other limited edition later.
They don’t keep the same amount of supply for special pieces. I can understand them if they limit the production and acquisition process to higher end models but this frogman doesn’t feel it should be that hard to get.
Interesting comparison. I personally have little to no interest in all those limited edition/collaboration models, while trying to build my collection around core models I like (the square, the 2100, the GWG-1K and 2K and just now recently the 6900) while at the same time occasionally buying other select models just to check them out. Having said that I would almost kill to get my hands on a Bruce Lee 😇 (only one of those went on sale in my home country 😵💫)
Good point. The collaborations are sort of a different breed. But the really good ones are just hard to get much less hard to afford. But a determined man will find a way.
I bought the gwg 2k as the perfect one watch collection. Didn't work out. In side on three months I had three watches. Dive watches were my down fall. Specifically Seiko dive watches. I went towards the top of the heap for my birthday watch, with the SLA021 Marinemaster. And I needed a beater so I got a Seiko BFK. Now I'm looking at Swiss luxury and German pilot watches and Grand Seiko too. Stay away from watches, I warned you.
@@drbobsnightmare2521 Haha, yeah, watches can drain your savings pretty quick, and can sometimes be like a real addictive substance. Whatever you ever do - never, ever pay for them with money you don’t already have 👍
Got to the point in my life ,I was ready to treat myself to a quality time piece ,looked at the major brands , I looked for weeks on TH-cam and online. Ended up buying a gwg2000 Mudmaster and now I have 4 other G shocks the craving is real. Don't even look at the other's anymore
You have the classic case of g-shockinitis. You’ll need 2 to 3 serials of the same model and probably will need some social distancing from your wife and kids to avoid contamination.
Very interesting - I really agree with your closing statement too - due to their huge range of styles and price range this must be very well considered and must have shown to be the way to grow those numbers - if they can get the hype and excitement without the same downside of excluding a lot of fans it's a home run! Another great video my friend
I like too that they produce a lot of the good models giving fans time to buy them. After that they discontinue them keeping the fans who bought happy and coming back for more.
l think it is great they have watches for the average person that just wants a great watch and fills the needs of the true collectors with limited editions
G-Shock earned its reputation from military men swearing by its durability. If it refocuses on churning out froufrou color combos it will lose its status real fast.
Excellet take. Recently I had a caioak craving but it's too costly to import here. So I'm considering saving up and in the meantime thinking of buying a Casio Royale. For just $25 I can get in the casio crowd.
I am going to have to call you out again, my friend, for listing a re-run as new. Don't get me wrong I like your channel and watch your videos all the time. :)
The more they increase the barrier to entry. The more fakes that will pop up. Even people who can afford will buy fakes. Make it impossible to aquire, then other will fill the void.
@@DesignAtelier Remember Napster? Bit torrent? make it impossible to get legally, then the illegal shows up. Or it just goes away. I just want to save some money, walk into a store, buy at retail and walk out. Or better buy used from another bloke and save a few k. I hate lines.
I finally got a chance to watch this and your insights are spot on. That poison frog sold out quick recently. And normally I wouldn't want one but the fomo kicked in and now I want one. 🙃
Haha. Just be smart at getting one. It’s costing a small premium online right now. Find a good deal and you get one on hand. Also I hear ramblings of a second MRG frogman so maybe you might want to wait on that as well.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder lol.... why anyone would want to wear that colourful frogman or a watch thats had a collaboration with a knitting company, newspaper or polo club is beyond me. I think more exclusive g shocks are nice but at the end of the day, its a g shock designed to be worn and roughed up...after all, wasnt that the main reason they were developed...remember the dw5200 hero hockey advert?
I really wanted the new Frogman, I own the the borneo toad rainbow frogman and its my number 1 favorite watch. When I heard about this allocation process I told myself that I would never buy another G-Shock again.
Why? So scalpers can sweep into stores and sell them for twice as much? Sure, sucks if you don't get one, but at least it attempts to weed out scalpers who buy up supplies.
The question is perception, is a 4K G-Shock worth the same as a 4K Omega? If you have the money to drop 4k on a watch and not think twice perhaps you get both, But what would the consumer choose? If your a GS fanatic then you know the answer. but still if your going to spend 1K+ on a watch your going to spend for something with more prestigious name and history. But If my budget is 2K+ I'm getting a Tudor or an Omega or a Doxa or a Oris, not a Casio. Sorry Casio I love you, but I dont love you more than 700 dollars and above. Same goes for Seiko... another one with delusions of grandeur.
Hmmm, click bait title if I've ever read one. I find your connection tenuous at best. Also when it comes to Rolex, it is the ADs you should be mad at, not Rolex. That Frogman will be on general sale in the UK soon I believe, without a lottery.
Yes correct. Japanese market is different.
The biggest mistake casio could / will make is to alienate themselves from the very people who made them famous in the first place.
Very true. So long as they keep catering to both class of customers, they should be safe.
so true 🙋🇩🇪
