    Jordan, this is a tip for storing ground beef when dividing up the "family" pack. After you put a portion in a freezer baggie, flatten it out! It thaws very quickly and takes up less space in the freezer. I often wait til the last minute to decide what I want for dinner; these flattened patties fit flat in the frying pan and thaw very quickly!

    That water-in-the-jar-to-get-the-last-bits hack - so true! I actually put the lid back on, shake it like a madman and try to get a bit more product out! Also, in some dishes, you can use milk (or alternative milk) instead of water - useful if you have a creamy sauce recipe. Thanks for sharing your pantry cooking IRL!

      It's true, but guess what. A little extra money and we forget everything grandma and mom taught us. I grew up poor and know how to do this 'when I have to,' but man, to do this on the regular now helps our budget so much.

      It’s been a way of life for generations in my family. My grandmother was the oldest of 12 kids and grew up in a small farming town. She had 7 kids of her own and they lived off of a carpenter’s income. She lived through the Great Depression so her frugality stayed all through life. Her tips and tricks passed to her own kids and on to my generation. Any other way just seems so wasteful.

      Pink salad! This phenomenon appears at every 4th of July at our family bbq. We grew up calling it “pink salad”. Eventually we learned it’s called ambrosias.

      Growing up in 3rd world country, using up what you have before shopping is just the normal thing to do, people shop daily or weekly at last, that doesn't mean food isn't available, it is, its just that we buy fresh food and storing tons of it didnt make any sense. Also, the pantry only had staples for making bread, like a big jar of oil, big containers of flour, and no doubles. We dont buy more until it's almost done. So i was shocked when i saw American pantries, i kinda fell in the wagon as well 😂

    I would love to try shelf cooking. My only issue is I have 5 kids and 3 are teenagers. They literally eat EVERYTHING! They make things to eat that you wouldn’t even consider to be a meal. I have a hard time keeping the meals I have planned together. I went to serve hotdogs and some of the buns were gone. They used them for sandwiches after they finished the 2 loaves of bread! Maybe someday I will be able to shelf cook lol.

      Michelle Leigh Huntress I can relate, I was going to fix tacos and all the tortillas were gone so I turned my meat into a Taco casserole by adding drained corn, beans, tomatoes and diced green chilies from my pantry. Milk was another I never could keep enough for them to drink and to have some to cook with.

    Shelf cooking has turned me into a pretty good cook!!! I used to hate cooking before!!
    I tell my Hubby that it basically is cooking what you've already bought and SAID you were going to cook! Just put them all together and don't buy from the store new stuff, until I've cooked and used up all the rest. NOW, I enjoy cooking and seeing what new creative dishes I can come up with! Loving the AllRecipes.com you shared in a previous video.

    You refreeze the meat after cooked? I was always taught that one shouldn’t do that.

    • @katykemal5256
      @katykemal5256 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You absolutely can as cooking kills the bacteria👍 what you shouldn’t do is thaw and re-freeze in the same raw state 👍

    • @katesanders2219
      @katesanders2219 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always heard the rule as you can only do each state once, so you can only freeze the raw meat once and only freeze the cooked meat once. So freeze raw meat, thaw and cook, freeze the cooked meat is fine. Freeze raw meat, thaw, refreeze raw meat is not okay; freeze cooked meat, thaw cooked meat, freeze cooked meat is not okay.

  • @lovelybutterfly32

    Watching one of your earlier vids encouraged me to start using what I have on hand and doubling the recipe so I'd have an extra meal to freeze. Now every other week or so I have a cook day where cook a few recipes, vacuum seal and toss in the freezer. I have enough handy now that all I do is take out different things to make meals for the day and pop in the microwave as needed. Hey, and I save pasta sauce, salsa or any type of jars. I cut up cucumbers, red and white onions and tomatoes, fill the jars with them, then make a batch of vinegar, salt, water, a bit of sugar and other seasonings that I like. Each person can make the brine as per their liking. I heat this brew on the stove and then poor in the jars and seal. The longer it sits the better it tastes! This is good to have on hand for quick salad making. All you have to do is pop the lid on a jar ( the warm brine seals the jars so they are shelf stable. I keep mine in the fridge as I like it cold) and add the pickled veggies to a bed of lettuce. I promise you you'll love it!

      I have tried this time and time again over many years and it has never worked for me. One hour, one day, or overnight. To no avail. I can't understand why people say this works.

    • @amyjones4123
      @amyjones4123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BitsOfThisNThat Sorry to hear that. I wonder why it doesn't always work. I usually buy large white onions. I wonder if it depends on what kind of onion you cut. Sometimes when I'm short on time I will stick them in the freezer for a short time. Also, I may turn on the vent over the stove, that seems to help too.

    I wish I could make this. My husband keeps trying to figure out what diet will help him feel good and lose weight, and his latest experiment is Keto. So no grains, no beans, no sugar or carbs, basically, and high fat. It’s so hard to make meals that work for everyone, and my husband doesn’t really cook, so it’s expensive, too. I try to be supportive, but I get so tired of trying to work around different diets!! 😞 (Sorry, needed to vent...) I did love the video, though!

You are a life saver, even for a family of 2 with just my hubby and I, I really love your videos and your tips about making ahead meals and freezing them and what other Items in your fridge can be saved, because I buy the larger size of Items because it is cheaper per ounce so having ways to save it, if we don’t use it as fast is amazing!!! Thank you!!!

    I ser that you also take oil from meat. I do it every time I make food. I found out that food is muuuuch better like that, not so oily and meat is so juicy. And of course I got a thinking like - I won't get so fat after it hahaha
    Now, let's watch further. Looks like a good recepie. Maybe I'll try it.

    Definitely more of these videos! You show us a lot about meal planning and buying groceries, but it would be really good to see a “what we eat in a week” kind of thing to really see how you implement your techniques. Of course, now it’s Shelftember, you could show us a week of shelf cooking meals which would probably give us meal inspo too! Your content is amazing as always!
