    The Americans said retaking the islands would be impossible and its much easier to defend a location than to retake it so usually you need a much larger force to retake an area than the number defending it and expect more casualties than the defenders and yet some how the British managed to retake the islands with significantly less casualties than the defenders. Its crazy impressive.

      When the British Empire began, we were a nation of only 4.1 million people. Divide by two to leave only men then divide that number by 4 to leave only fighting age men. We took 1/4 of the planet.

      That's the sad reality, Joaquin. Anglo-Argentine relations could and should be so much better (we've a lot in common), but politicians would rather keep this simmering-away, instead of developing our mutual trade & cultural opportunities :(

    Interesting fact at 9:45 the cruiser that was sunk the ARA General Belgrano was originally the U.S. Brooklyn-class cruiser USS Phoenix who'd been at Pearl Harbor the morning of the attack, went on to earn 9 Battle Stars (which used to be commendations issued to USN warships for noteworthy participation in battles they've since been replaced with a new award) for her part in the war and was sold to the Argentine Navy after the war.

    A couple notes, 1. while UK is a naval super power, their supply line was very stretched and there was a real concern that their carrier could be sunk and that would cripple their offensive. 2. Chile had just finished a war with Argentina and were secretly supporting British Intelligence. Chile was a base of operation for a couple raids, and Chile's radar gave Britain early warning for Argentine activity.

    Hi, actual Argentinian here. Just a quick fact I feel always gets overlooked. Most of the soldiers where conscripts between 18-24 years old, from the northern provinces where the climate is usually very hot and humid, sub-tropical climate. That plus the army being horrendously under equipped was one of the main reasons we got plummeled. Now, I don't want to start a political war in the comments, for my own sake I don't give a fuck about the islands or its inhabitants. This war happened 10 years before I was even borned. I just wanted to throw this little bit of info.

    I believe the Falklands War is the only war where both sides were using the same type of rifle (Belgian-made FN FAL), except the Argentinians were using the full-auto modification and the British had the semi-automatic version. If I recall, British soldiers would sometimes replace their rifles with Argentinian trophies since they wanted the ability to fire long bursts. After all, the ammo was the same

    • @jagdpanther1944
      @jagdpanther1944 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      interesting info, I recall British soldiers in early 80's to 1990's hated their guns, they complained that foreign forces had far superior weapons, and it caused a lengthy royal commision in the British army as to why their guns were so inadequate

      I’ve spoken to a lot of Falkland war vets and they have said they wouldn’t swap the SLR with the full auto as you would run out of ammo more quickly and the sights wouldn’t be correct also they would of got a right bollocking for dropping their own weapon. Every British soldier loved their SLR. So far the I haven’t found any proof that Brits picked up the FN FAL. maybe the guys with the sterling smg might of picked up a FAL but would of swapped back to the SLR when one was available

    America was in a difficult position here, they had a defense treaty with the South American nations but then the UK was also party to that same treaty thanks to the Falklands and some other holdings, plus Argentina was the aggressor here. So mostly they stayed out of it except providing behind the scenes intelligence data to the UK, satellite imagery and so on.

    Here an argentinian. Here its a big deal the Malvinas between 40+ years people, but the new generations dont really care. Also, the majority of the soldiers where young guys from between 18-early 20s and with limited training, thats because the good troops were in the frontier with Chile, because Chile was an ally of GB and they were afraid of an invasion by the chilean.

    The Soviets supported Argentina in this war, providing intelligence. And yes, it was pretty awkward for both governments to work together.
    Also, the British navy did in fact blockade the islands, the problem was that they are so close to the Argentine mainland that Argentine jets could directly take off from there to carry out their bombing runs.
