Incase you're wondering - in the UK our schools teach students about WW1 but from a perspective of Germany being an evil nation which isn't always true. Popular topics are Gas attacks, nationalism, Christmas truce, propaganda and poetry like 'Dulce et Decorum est, To die for ones country is not glorious'. There's soo much they don't educate sadly as its mostly emphasising how bad it was for our boys on the western front in general.

Parsons in the US you only learn about the Zimmerman telegram, and that the US went in after the telegram, fought a few battles, then the war ended. If you were lucky you may have learned a bit of Lusitania. Most people don’t know that Italy, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Russia fought. Most people don’t know that even France fought in the war, and those who did think that France surrendered in WW1

Please do a collaboration with Mr Terry. Both giving your reactions to a video at the same time. That would be amazing.

As a French, i can tell you that the battle of Verdun is one thing that terrifies me, for both sides, being fed into this meat grinder must have been shocking at a point we cannot imagine...Even to WW2 standards, Verdun is an hideous battle with terrifying amount of casualties (700 000)...

In France, we also don't really learn about the colonial battles in Africa. The focus is on Europe, and rather toward the western front.
But to be honest, I think that's understandable it generally focuses on Europe. It's cool that Epic History TV shows how there were battles worldwide, but those were fairly small battles that were mostly inconsequential in the final result of the war. Germany losing all its colonies didn't change a thing, as long as there was the naval blockade anyway. I don't think it's Eurocentric to say it was mainly a European war.

I was curious about what Japan was doing this whole time - I found this interesting about 1915 but anyway. "In February 1915, marines from the Imperial Japanese Navy ships based in Singapore helped suppress a mutiny by Indian troops against the British government. "

Also lots of the technology first used in the War between the States in America is now being used. The first machine guns are used and all ships are made of iron.

I appreciate the fact that you pull out that name: general Boroevic, he was probably one of the best generals in that period, the great defense war Tha Austria-Hungary fought was for good part his "fault" (I say fault becouse I'm Italian, by the way I live nearby Asiago).

Canada after world war one gained greater independence from the UK. Canada was automatically at war with Germany when Great Britain declared war, but were a separate signatory nation to the Treaty of Versailles. After WW1 there would never be another war in which Canada itself would decided to join. (Canada joined the second World War 7 days after the British declared war). Newfoundland, now a province of Canada, but at that time was still a separate colony (and oldest oversea British colony) managed to raise its own regiment, fighting separately from the Canadians. The Newfoundland regiment served in Gallipoli and in the trenches of Europe. The Regiment was almost completely obliterated suffering 90% losses. The king recognized their great sacrifice be bestowing the title of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. This war created a National identity for Canadians, "We went up the ridge as Albertans and Nova Scotians. We came down as Canadians" - Vimy Ridge veteran, April 9th 1917

I don't know about the other states in the US but when I was growing up I was taught in high school that in World War 1 there was no clear-cut good or bad guy. Yeah we were taught that we basically enter the war because Germany kept provoking us but we are also taught about the Lusitania and how we were basically smuggling weapons to Britain, so we were basically taught that there was no good guy or bad guy in that war.

A city in Ontario Canada, changed its name during WW1and named it after the British General, Kitchener. The name of the city prior to World war 1 was Berlin.

20:25 ARDEAL, not "Ardey", it had 3 millions romanians in Transilvania, Banat and Bucovina.
    20:40 Basarabia (Very good pronuntiation)
20:50 We take all the Bucovina + Herta Land (a very small redion bethuin Bucovina and Basarabia. Romania today don't have Basarabia, Herta Land and Nord part of Bucovina. WW1 (Bucovina is 1 full region), afther WW2 (Bucovina is cut in half by Stalin and Nord go in USSR and Soud stay to Romania). Hitler didn't want to let Stalin take all the Bucovina so he agree just the norden part.
About the spirit of that war, in Romania we are very proud and happy of that moment in our history, because we wanted from a long time to unificate and to be all the romanian in one country, so even before the war we didn't have good relationship whit Hungary and Russia so goint to war against one of our main rival whas just grate, the fact that we win the war make the things even bether and from that time 1 December will become our national day of Romania in 1989. Today Romania celebrate 1 December as the moust glorios day of our History togeder whit Rep. Moldova (but theyr national day is the independence day from USSR in 1991)

The Emperor Franz Joseph *WAS NOT* succeeded by his son. His son committed suicide along with his mistress Baroness Vetsara at the Mayrling (one of the Imperial Hunting lodges) in 1889. He was succeeded by his Great-Nephew who was Archduke Karl of Austria, the nephew of Archduke Franz Ferdinand the guy assassinated whose death started th chain reaction that started this whole mistake.....

15:15 - !THAT PART IS NOT CALLED BUCOVINA!
Bucovina is the norden part from Romania in the Austro-Hungary empire, but you point a big zone whit is not Bucovina. Look on the map and learn that Bucovina is only that small corner that is geting in the Romania from Austro-Hungary. Ask an Ukrainian person what region is ther i know is something like Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Livov. In the soud of wher are you showing in the video is Bucovina and Transcarpatia.

    • @MarkVrem
      @MarkVrem 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Transcarpatia makes sense, like back in Roman Republic years, they had TransAlpineGaul, for the area where today is Milan etc.
