      My biggest struggle I guess would be that I was unaware of having a way of culling before lightroom so everything from my wedding and or portrait session went straight from my SD cards to lightroom, then I cull, edit, save the ones I want to give my client in a separate folder inside that folder and then move those and the all the RAWS off my harddrive and on to my externals...and I run my lightroom on my hard drive; which is another, additional issue I guess.

      Hey Katelyn, I just wanted to thank you (in everybody's name I guess) for today's email. I would never have thought of it. Such a small addition to portraits, but sooooo much value! 💕

      Im still so lost, I think theres no hope for me haha. I transfer everything straight from my SD cards to lightroom, create folders within the catalog, then export. The folders I create within LR catalog also show up on my computer hard drive. I can transfer all the raws and exports to my hard drive after that but Ive noticed I cant copy my LR catalogs without losing everything. Ive tried all the hacks and can reconnect it after its in my hard drive but Ive noticed the quality isnt the same and now I no longer have the LR catalog on the original internal drive. So now, Ive been backing up everything to my externals but I havent been moving any catalogs and now my internal drive is at capacity. So I guess my question would be if Tyler could dive into how exactly hes doing this process, how to organize an already full drive, and how exactly hes relying on just smart previews to save space. Its hard to visualize all the steps hes referring to. Thank you so much!!!

    Cool simple system. I will just add 3 important things:
    - For the hybrid user (laptop & desktop) I strongly recommend to add a backup option of your SSD. Because if it crashes you loose all your edits!
    - same advice for your LR Catalog on your editing machine (having your catalog folder automatically backuped every day for example).
    - last one, when you talk about Dropbox it’s important to clarify that if you activate the smart sync fonction Dropbox will work like Backblaze, so also delete the file :)

    Great system. Pro tip: especially if you are storing your Lightroom catalogue on a laptop or SSD drive, configure Lightroom to backup the catalogue to a dropbox folder every time you exit Lightroom. That way, you're not relying on backblaze alone (which in my case, is backing up my desktop, not my laptop), or worse a fantasy that you're going to take that SSD back to the desktop and back up your catalogue. If you lose that SSD you lose all your edits! Note that dropbox would not contain your working catalogue, only the backup in case you lose your laptop or SSD.

      Haha, not a dumb question! Yes they do both need to be plugged in for Chronosync to back them up. You can always transfer the images to Drive A without Drive B attached. You can actually setup Chronosync to automatically run the mirror as soon as it detects Drive B if you don't want to leave it plugged in at all times. What happens if you lose your catalog disk with all your previews - can you rebuild that from the desktop or something? That seems to be the single point of failure. Looking to adopt something like this for my own workflow - would be nice to have my whole catalog available to my laptop.

    • @tylerherrinton
      @tylerherrinton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is the advantage of Backblaze. You could also store your LR catalog in Google Drive and use Drive File Stream to sync it between your computers!

    • @jwnphoto
      @jwnphoto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tylerherrinton by "store" do you mean setting Google Drive folder as a backup destination? Or actually working off a lightroom catalog that is on Google Drive. If the latter, that would be a problem if you wanted to access your catalog while offline (this happens often when I travel)

    • @tylerherrinton
      @tylerherrinton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can! I think you can actually set them to automatically be deleted after a certain time in Preferences. You can delete them by going to Library> Previews > Discard Smart Previews!

    I guess with your dual laptop / desktop setup you always need to initially import the photos using the desktop to get your RAW images onto Drive A? Then you can subsequently edit on your laptop?

    I disagree with the large Mybook 8TB drives, during 2020 I lost two of those drives while setting up a new office and lost 5 years of files. I did not have a good backup in place and was crushed and lost 16TB of data. Those drives are tall and top heavy and if anything knocks against they can easily fall over which is what happened in my case. I am currently using a combination of multiple 2TB drives, backups and some cloud backup.
