  • SanDisk drives have been failing and people have been losing years of data because of it. Here is why I'm still using one, but am not worried about it one bit [even if it does end up failing].

Yes, I’d like to see a detailed video on your current backup process. I have a NAS with RAID 5, plus Time Machine on an SSD, and a desktop external drive, plus copies on SSDs in another location. I would like to streamline the process of moving projects off my laptop drive in order to free up space. I used to subscribe to a cloud service, but it was very slow to upload to initially and I was concerned about the ease of use if I needed to retrieve all my data.

I bought a Sandisk SSD just like yours in January of 2023. I noticed it overheating with some very basic Lightroom edits. I use a Mac Studio. I sent it back to Sandisk, and they sent me another. It also overheats but not as easily. I need to run PS, LR, and Final Cut to get it to overheat like the last one. With the latest Petapixel article, I bought a Samsung T7 shield. I have had T5s in the past and they’re great. My backups are Western Digital HDDs though, on a 2 disk Raid setup. I have them setup as Raid 1.

    Awesome video Benj!
Definitely do a video about the transfer process and such! having the peace of mind that your data is safe must be nice.

Full time SysAdmin/Part time landscape/wedding photographer.
    Here's my tip!
Short-term/workflow storage? Use a SSD. Smaller, quicker, and portable for reading and writing project data.
Long term/Backup whether it's local/NAS? Use spinning drives. The work speed of the drives aren't important for long term data storage, plus they're cheaper too!
Personally, I store my data on an off site cloud service and across multiple spinning drives that I will power off when not in use (Lightroom Catalog included). I like to air-gap all local backup storage because you'll never know if a possible computer infection will replicate and render all your data useless.
When I'm processing, the working files are copied over to the internal SSD of my workstation and will remain there until completion.
All new metadata will be synced into it's corresponding directories at all backup destinations.

I would love a more in-depth process for backups and systems!

What would be a recommended alternative to the Sandisks?

I get the part of having the files in different locations, but how is the workflow, when actually working with the files? Because you have to import files in to LR, do you export them directly after editing and delete it from the LR library? Sounds like so much importing and exporting😅 Hope you habe some insights, maybe in the upcoming video

For Apple users, I have my Photos library on an external drive. All working drives are backed up with Time Machine, which is standard on all [I]Macs, on another external drive. All working drives, including internal and external are also backed up to iCloud and all photos are also backed up to free Amazon cloud drive and also to Google Drive. That pretty much covers all eventualities apart from the coming of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.

I could never get Time Machine to work 😢

@@ElinWinblad I am amazed by that. It just works. The only setting you need is to specify any extra drives you want to exclude and the interval for backups. If you are a light user who does little critical work, set it to back up weekly, otherwise every hour.

SSDs are not best for long-term storage. Just use proper spinning HDDs. That's backup 101.

Warning: I used Carbon Copy Cloner for years with no error, then recently had it corrupt some drives.

Definitely do not recommend the car. Especially with how many breakins and stolen vehicle issues we have in CO.

Locking an extra set in a glovebox is a fairly easy solution, but it’s all just suggestion. I’d never leave a solo copy of something in a car
