It’s not about the money! It’s about the quality of life! I just turned 60 and finally figured it out. You’re living the dream, don’t lose sight of that. Here in South Carolina we Americans have it all wrong. We live to work. And then we die. Your doing life right sir.
Thank you @tomnixon9551. I think we all struggle with that work / life conuncdrum at some stage. Its such a shame how much pressure we put on ourselves to keep up. ☺️
We bought a house that is about 14 miles from your house in Corinaldo in 2012. Hard to adequately describe the beauty of the region. We enjoy returning and reestablishing friendships. The restoration truly never ends, but its the best part of the journey.
Having binged all the recent videos it is interesting to notice how you have adjusted your style over time. Huge fan of the authentic, vulnerable, chatty, self deprecating and funny host you have evolved into. Love this project and your passion for it. 👏🏼
Thanks @jennifermalberg5934 . The editing should be improving but the storytelling still needs a load of work. So much to learn!😂 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Homesteading in Italy. You have stolen my dream. Congratulation for this channel.
Another great video - I think we all appreciate the lack of silly library music, the calm almost meditative state that you labour in and the fact there's no idiotic "Please like, subscribe and ring that bell" nonsense that's such a turn-off in other YT vids. Keep the format exactly as it is - don't be tempted - and you'll get more subscribers than you could ever have dreamed possible.
Thank you @sailwesterly5444 . I am so pleased to read this as I am blinded by the 'subscribe' thing and need to keep on track. I have a lot to learn about sound and where to place music so it really works all while wanting to play the natural sounds. Other than the odd tractor, or the farmers dogs going wild at feed time, it is just the sound of nature. Once things bed in and I see who the real audience is I will ask for more of what is coming over well and what is not so good. Thanks again. I really appreciate it.
Impressed by your kitchen bench! I would start with the neighbours concerning the water, then the Geometra. If it looks like possibly more than garden water, the local commune should point you to testing labs.
Hi Richard, hello from 9,000 km across the Atlantic to your NW. Congrats on that kitchen counter, looks so inviting! And I actually think your outhouse has great potential, could be so much worse (rotting/stinking hols in the ground, etc). About the well: I'd definitely want to know about the history of crops and agricultural chemical use upwind and up-slope of your land. BTW, please don't feel like you have to only show "the good" parts of your journey; "mistakes" are steps to learning, and out here in viewer land we are all just fellow humans, admiring your courage and initiative to take a risk and live your dream! Lee
Hello @LPay-jy8mx You're right. It could be a lot worse. Thanks for the feedback re what to show. Sometimes mistakes take a while to present themselves so I will be honest and try cover everything. There have been a few things that I made mistakes on - related to weed management - that I cut out as I thought it was really boring footage!😂 Maybe I do a round up video every now and again to cover the good, the bad, and the ugly, for those interested in the full detail of this journey. I appreciate the feedback. Thank you.
I love your vids. Your toil and drive and birds in the background is so refreshing. These days all you see is hacks and with you living my goal I can see actually how much work it takes and there’s no short cuts.
HI @ccavila5250 . Thank you. I can see the temptation to cut through the edit of all the work and skip to the finished parts. I plan to show as much of the real side and all the running around it takes with a nice shine of the lovely lifestyle here. Thanks for watching - I hope you reach your goal soon!👍
Hello @sueczerniak1266 . Kitchen 2.0 was a major upgrade from that rooten door! I hope v3.0 is a proper kitchen with fixed things and a sink! I plan to start that this summer.
I don't know about that, rotten doors has a splash of panache! I must say that there was something of satisfying simplicity to that build@@threeacresofmarche
Good luck with your project. Love your video style, quiet with just you working and the wind in the trees. Please check your footwear before putting your foot in, could be a scorpion sleeping in there!
Thank you @lyndaking7519 - I found that scorpion after I had been lifting the bricks with no gloves. I had no idea they were there. I won't be doing that again!😅
I am a 4th generation/descendant of a Portuguese immigrant in the ‘New World’ who became a merchant/entrepreneur that a stretch of California coastline became named in recognition of the popular enterprise of goods from the area of Petaluma southward. Today, Brazil Beach is an RV park since sold through family conflict since nothing could be agreed upon in a long fought legal battle spanning decades. I hope one day to do the same thing as you have in my home country; structure a home, build a life, and a family to prosper in what may seem like new beginnings. Thank you for showing me that these dreams are not unreal.
Hello @carolmacrini7757 I think the one level could come in handy as I get older!😂 The gopro....I think I will try that one day! I will keep you posted.
I need to clean my Abruzzo house as well and this video is so encouraging! I love the makeshift counter table in the kitchen! At first I thought it was going to be a workbench. Blessings from Texas!!
Your look of trepidation and apprehension as you inspected the outbuildings made me smile. New subscriber from Merseyside, UK. Thank you. Living vicariously through you.😊

I started to watch your videos as I might want to buy a house in Marche. And you are very nice and its interesting to watch. I am from Austria and did all of these things you are doing now a few years ago in Spain...
I fell upon your channel today and must say, it’s mesmerizing. Beautiful property and even more beautiful ideas you have. Absolutely took my breath away when you were kayaking, never seen such a beautiful blue water. My next vacation will be Italy, a childhood friend who has lived there for 25 years has begged me to! Love your taste in music. Would you mind sharing some of the artists please? I look forward to your next video. Greetings from Texas, USA😏
Hi @kellieforsyth2568 Thanks for watching! A trip to see a friend that has lived here for so long would be amazing - they can show you the best of it all! 😎 Good idea re the music - I will try mention the artists. I have a subscription to Artlist so they are all able to be used on TH-cam.
Great progress at clearing things up and getting the property useable. Be patient, things (bureaucracy) take time in the Marche. Watching from Adelaide, Australia.
HI @matteobarchiesi791 - thank you. The pace sometimes does me a favour as having more time in it as it is allows me to get a good feel for what would work or not. I am sure I will get there....once I get used to the pace.😊
Hello from California! New subscriber here and I just want to say what a beautiful property you have there. Great buy with so much potential and the surrounding view is absolutely gorgeous! I love what you done so far and can’t wait to see what comes next. 👍👏🏼😍
I read all the comments on this vid…ppl really like you & your project….and leave good advice….keep up the good work….fellow Englishman living in Castellon Spain….
If water-shortages will be an issue in summer, you should consider some swales for your land. Even if they are relatively small - say 2' deep and 4' wide, they will make a big difference to what you can grow and how it grows. As for the well, get ALL the info you can about it, gopro etc..
Thank you @ginojaco . I am looking into rainwater harvesting or using the well water when I start to plant. The region seems to be very supportive of these ideas so that should all be great in the future.🙌
Hi, from Dorset. Love your enthusiasm, I'm jealous really I should have done what you're doing 20yrs ago. I am visiting my sister in Canelli in Piedmont in two weeks time which I do twice a year. They have renovated a house and garden up in the hills and I always think working in the winter is really rewarding, especially with bonfires and clearing stuff and hopefully having some early sunshine and sunsets. Keep up the enthusiasm, you'll get there, even if it might be a lengthy process! I'll be watching your progress.
Thank you @lucywattridge1946 . You are right about the taking the day to clear up and build a fire. Something very relaxing and rewarding in all thar hard work. Helps you sleep like a log also!😂
13:55… just wanted to write take care of scorpions and snakes. I once was Stung by a Skorpion in tuscany. Painfull Like a hornet but not dangerous. I was wearing flip-flops like you in your summer videos. Always protect yourselve!
Wear work boots. You don't want a thorn or worse a piece of metal going into your foot or your foot gets smashed by something heavy something. Just a mom thinking of your welfare. 😊
Check your drainage around the house before the rains. With the property being on a slope may require French drains, soakage pits etc! Good luck with it, great views.
Thanks @bd452 . I paid somebody to come and create some drainage runs for me last winter. Long term, onc the landscaping starts, there will be plenty of French drains and run off areas. So far so good and the massive storms that I have seen have not caused any damage to the house.🤞
Hi @lucaspolderman6622 - I think I need to salvage those doors as best I can. I am not sure what to do with them yet but they do feel like they are pieces of art in themselves.
I fully expected a longdrop, but no a properly installed toilet commode, which suggests a septic system or town supply. A huge win i would have thought, even if the septic needs cleaning. Lovely property, even if some of the insect natives are less than sociable.
@@threeacresofmarche but we can see where you’re going and it’s a beautiful place. Be nice to see you chatting Italian locals and give us your ideas for the next 12 months
Another simple yet inspiring vid! Although people will be living vicariously through your content, hopefully it also encourages us all to action re our own dreams and lives. I was reminded of the following quote the other day ( from my fav movie Under the Tuscan Sun ) " Life offers us a thousand chances. All we have to do is take one." Cheers to La Dolce Vita! :)
Hello @angeltravelstheworld - I think I am going to have to watch that movie. One quote that has stuck with me and did shift me into gear - 'be more fearful of regret than failure'.
@@threeacresofmarche You'll love the film! Great quote as well. Yes, no regrets in life! It's not about the time we have on this earth, rather what we do with the time that we have :)
We have at home more then 200 years old well made out of large rocks in circle. How we do it; We use magnet and "old school" hooks to fish any metal or debris that might be in the well. We take all water out when it is still for some years, so new water comes in and it is fresh. We have thing called "centers" where we can send the sample of the water to that center and they say; how, what is in the water and if it drinkable. We do not cover the well as there will bacteria and other stuff growing (that's how it is here in Balkan). Usage of any "iron" is a no no as it will rust out and drop on the floor of the well and pollute your well. Our neighbors use better pumps then it is actual depth. Lets say well is 15 meters depth, they have pump for 18 meters. Do not take my advice for granted. There will/are better ideas out there.
Thank you @Metalmaxm that is very interesting and thank you for taking the time to help. The previous owner said that their parents used the well for years and it never ran dry.
Greetings from the Treasure Coast of Florida- where we have unhappily been having a very unusual gray damp cool winter. Nice to follow you on your adventures.❤
❤❤hi vicki from australia tuning in,love your house, love that bench you made very clever, bit worried about all that undergrowth you have, snakes will be after the rats, wish you all the very best mate cheers xxx 😊
Just randomly stumpled on the vid nr 2. And now cant stop watching!! Love the process and the VIEW u have gained is STUNNING!!! cant wait to follow and see it all change! Watching from Denmark, Scandinavia! :)
@@threeacresofmarche Watching a fit gentleman craft a home out of a ruin is quite entertaining - and your views are spectacular. Can't wait to see what's next!
I love your little “pillow shots” through your vids and at the end. I can see what you see in your much loved vistas in those still compositions. Nice channel . Watching from Adelaide, South Australia.
I live in marche, to be able to test the water you could hear from some universities nearby, for example the university of camerino does different tests for different water bottles famous here in italy
Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada 🇨🇦. Just subscribed to watch you on your journey. What a beautiful location! The kitchen is looking great with the new bench. I hope you get some friends to come help you at some point.
Hi @suewellings4500 now that I have set up this channel I can name and shame those that promise but are yet to turn up! I think there may be more wine drinking that work getting done though! Not a problem really...😂
Hi @stan525 . I just need to get it out (it is stuck in the mud from the rain wash) and a machine to drag it around. If it can be resused or gifted to another farmer, I will.👍
When I stumbled on your channel earlier today, I thought, I know him ! No idea why, so figured you must have a double. Went to 2nd episode, already seen it, ep 3 seen it, that's where I know you from. Oh by the way, episodes 2 & 3 got thumbs up back then, sorry can't give another one...
I'm really enjoying your videos (from Durban, South Africa) Another channel I watch is Positano Diaries, English lady married to delightful Italian man. They bought a second home in Tuscany and had the same problem, the entire kitchen had been removed by the previous owner. It seems from what they said that this is not unusual.
Lovely kitchen table n shelf. Maybe just maybe an old tile or marble slab under the stove would be safer n less of a fire hazard ☢️. All the best on your journey. Idyllic views and the layout of the house itself
I can see why you avoided going in the outhouse, the place you have your pants down is the last place to come across a snake lol. The one thing I'm scared of for sure, and I've had my fair share of encounters living in rural South Africa.👍
Hi Richard, you‘ve coolen a very nice piece of Italy. Actually, we are also looking for a nice place in the Marche, just a little more south around Osimo. Over the last years, we have discovered the Marche quite a bit. We will continue beginning of may for a few days. May we have the chance to meet in person, while buying some wine next to your place. Cheers, Joerg
Hi @BrianAndLilly - you have picked a gem of a location. The coast near there is fantastic. I go to Sirolo and Portonovo quite often to kayak or SUP along the coast. Good luck with the search.
Funny - thank you @RobertLongley1 . Although - you say that - I have watched a few videos on 'tanking' when I was looking at a farmhouse with low ground floor ceilings.😂
Hello @rozmarinromero2097 There has been a farmer managing the land for a few years and I have carried on with him while I get my permisssions. I have ideas to grow a variety of things. Not being there full time may slow the food forest idea, but we shall see. There is a neighbour nearby that looks like they can help with the food ideas part. I will cover what I am and am not allowed to with the land part in a video soon.
I just started watching you today (4/24) I knew you would figure out how to get that table through the door!. I am impressed, like you already...I just happened to have found you on a search on Italy. I found out through DNA testing that I have 28% Italian. No freaking idea where this came from! Most of my ancestors are English, Irish, northern European and of course French. Nothing about me is Italian, born in Vermont, USA, old farm girl, I do like olives, not too crazy about Italian food. Any how I will continue your progress and learn a little about Italy with you. I will be dropping you a chat off and on. Marlene
Hi @marlenecollins1366 . I enjoyed my travels through Vermont - lovely part of the world. Stowe was good fun for the skiing. If you talk with your hands then that may be the 28% in action😂 Thanks for watching. Best wishes.🙌
Hey, really enjoying your videos. Keep em coming 😊 also i feel like and i can probably talk for most people that longer videos would be really appreciated. I wouldnt mind 90 mins of content. Less cuts and more footage. Greetings
Hi @user-en2tk1bd8b Thank you for the feedback. I am new to this so will see where the majority want to take the footage and detail shown. As I build this up I should be able to cover a few different videos to give an honest view of what it is really like. Thanks again. I really appreciate it.
@@threeacresofmarche thank you for trying your best, showing us authentic content and really appreciating us audience :-) Wishing you the best for the future
What a beautiful location. Loved the bit where you found the scorpion and then left one of your boots laying flat on its side. Next weeks episode; 'lo ospedale'? Stay safe :)
That's funny. @art7867 I did not intent to be so dramatic with the boot cliffhanger!😂 I shake all footware and clothes just in case! I think I have found the area that they set up home and as I cleared that up I don't think there will be problem. HOWEVER - my guard will be up until the end of time after seeing a few!😁
Hello, with regards to off-grid I didn't know until recently that it is illegal in Italy, if you install solar panels you are obliged to sell the electricity to the national grid and they give it back to you!! Not entirely sure how this works, you will have to ask an expert, I just wanted to soften the blow! I also have a well, in Piemonte region and my husband had it analysed, it resulted being drinkable very handy in the height of summer with the exceptionally hot weather when sometimes it's rationed. All the best going forward.
Hello @annbottelli5682 - thank you for the heads up. I can see the energy companies pushing back hard on solar. On grid is affordable for the energy I use so maybe a portable device would be sufficient for me to occasionally pump. Thanks for your help. All the best to you too.
I live in italy and have been for 22 years. It's not illegal. I am actually planning on getting an off grid panel and battery kit you can find them online there's many businesses that install off grid setups and i personally know 2 people that have off grid setups.
Ah, hoping this is me in a few years, once I've sorted my registration out! Very looking forward to seeing how this works out for you. Did you catch those eyes peering out at you from under the shelf in the first shed? Spooky!
Watching the fourth video now, wishing you would TALK more about what you were doing at the time. SO glad to hear you started talking midway in this video. I'm sure the work you are doing is strenuous, but adding what you are doing as you are doing it would be welcome! THANK YOU for not have any music in the background! I find that more distracting than asking for subscribers! p.s. .I subscribed AND liked, didn't share yet! :) I had to GUESS what you were about to do! Will be watching what you have posted, CIAO!
Hi @artcreativelydone7761 Thanks for watching. I am new to all this 😂 These early ones are both me getting confidence in filming...the talking to camera takes a while...plus my editing skills are developing as I go. Thank you for subscribing etc - I hope you see some positive progression in the next few videos. I struggled with the sound in these early ones but I hope that improves as I make more and learn more. Thanks again - feel free to ask any questions. Ciao.🙌
I would not use that well water even for garden purposes if you want to be organic. I imagine the fertilizers and other chemicals from the surrounding farm fields are in the ground water. Always undercut a branch before cutting it. That way, if it wants to break before you're clear through it, it will break clean at the undercut. This is the first of your videos at the house I have seen, so I subscribed. Should be interesting. The drone shot of your place surrounded by farm fields made me laugh. It reminded me of the movie "Being There." Chancey the gardener (Peter Sellers) has to leave the rich mans house he grew up in after the old man died. When he comes out, the house is the only one left in the neighborhood, and the surrounding area is a wasteland.
I look forward to your video every week. I enjoy watching you think about individual points and design your property piece by piece. My other favorite is 'Real Algave Living'. Maybe you know Andrews videos too? My request to you: Could you continue to number your videos? In April, May and June I'm searching my own little dream in Piedmont and I don't want to miss a video. 🙂Numbering makes it much easier to keep track. (Sorry if my English is a bit bumpy. It's not my native language.) Buona serata!
Hello @gabrielar.6936 nice to meet you. Your English is excellent! Good point about the numbers. Once I publish more videos I can make chapters so that thins will be easier to find and follow. Best wishes for your search.
Hi @scottvanheulen8338 - I hope that when I dig the mud that has built up around them from the rain/mud run off from the field, all of the 'stuff' in that area will be easy to lift out. I started to dig around something else nearby and pulled out over 30 glass bottles! So, the process may take me quite some time with many trips to the recycling depot.😃
Ask the municipal about all your questions. I would be concerned about the Ph which is what the test will show & any other minerals you may want to keep or eliminate. When you get a pump also look at a water filter/purification. Another method to store water could be creating your own reservoir with a run off. A simple method for the land is to create a 3-4 tiered system of different sized stones to rocks which is cheap.
Thanks @andrewcowman8731 . I will be looking at creating water storage at the top of the field once the lansdscaping and planting takes shape. I will do the tests then to make sure that it is ok for use on the tress and grass etc. After reading the comments and learning more about the local are with the free supply of filtered water, I think I will leave the drinking side. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.👍
Hi @jennyhedlund3626 I put food in and people comment (complain). I will try add some things as I go but am still learning from what people like to see in these videos.😁

This is particularly good for fruit trees such as your cherry.
Thanks - good tips. I will look for a help video with that method. Sounds good and safer for the fall away also.
Richard! What an amazing piece of land. You're doin' great, love your video's lad, keep goin'!!!
My father is from Corinaldo. Madonna del piano. I used to spend summers there. You’re living my dream.
Hello @stonedesign1 . I hope you make it back here one day soon.
I was there in August with my daughter. If you need anything I have many cousins in the area. Check out Terra del piano. My cousin runs and owns it.

Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa. Looking forward to your new episodes.
Hello @robertmayer4415 Cape Town is on my 'must visit one day soon' list!👍
That’s a very luxurious outhouse!
Hi @davidbiddle3257 - a quick sweep up and makes sure the toilet flushes and its good to go!😂
Hi I’m watching from Calgary Alberta Canada, best of luck with this new adventure. I hope thing go along smoothly as much as possible.
Thank you @ruthnoronha8206 - what a wonderful part of the world you live in.
I started to watch your videos as I might want to buy a house in Marche. And you are very nice and its interesting to watch. I am from Austria and did all of these things you are doing now a few years ago in Spain...
Forza e coraggio 💪💪💪
😂 Thank you @davideborgna4918
Good idea re the music - I will try mention the artists.
Hello @mmsmilenow - thank you! 🙌
I read all the comments on this vid…ppl really like you & your project….and leave good advice….keep up the good work….fellow Englishman living in Castellon Spain….
Thanks @simoncabral1004 . Yes - the comment, support and tips that come in a great! I really appreciate them all.
Helps you sleep like a log also!😂
It's never too late! I'm close to my 50s and think about moving to some project house as well! All the best from Dorset!

Hi @wim.kluvers1942 ouch - that sounds nasty. Glad to hear it wasnt something worse.
Wear work boots. You don't want a thorn or worse a piece of metal going into your foot or your foot gets smashed by something heavy something. Just a mom thinking of your welfare. 😊
You can sense the tranquility in your beautiful property. Following you from Italy :)
Hello @howtomakestuff8 . Thank you. That peace and quiet is adictive for sure!
Your dimensional lumber is way better than what we get here in the states!! I am jealous🙂
Hi @davidlanders2853 I am not sure where all the wood here comes from. Maybe up the road from Austria?

Thank you @caldosan5823 😂
Wow! Amazing how much brush you have cleared out in a few short months! Looking good.
👍
Nice video. I like the wooden doors in the outbuilding.
Hi @lucaspolderman6622 - I think I need to salvage those doors as best I can. I am not sure what to do with them yet but they do feel like they are pieces of art in themselves.

Hello @TheBluebellMoon2 - kitchen 2.0 not likely to make House & Home magazine cover, but it'll do for now.😄
I fully expected a longdrop, but no a properly installed toilet commode, which suggests a septic system or town supply. A huge win i would have thought, even if the septic needs cleaning. Lovely property, even if some of the insect natives are less than sociable.
It took me a while to trace and find that septic system....I am not sure if what I found is suitable to share though.😬

We are loving the videos Richard, keep em coming thanks

I understand that in many states in the US, routine and regular tests of well water is mandated. That is a very good idea.

Hi @GreenGrow-ck3pg
I'm really enjoying your videos (from Durban, South Africa) Another channel I watch is Positano Diaries, English lady married to delightful Italian man. They bought a second home in Tuscany and had the same problem, the entire kitchen had been removed by the previous owner. It seems from what they said that this is not unusual.

Hi @SuperDutch64 thank you. I hope to be moving on with the proper kitchen this summer.🤞

Hi @BrianAndLilly - you have picked a gem of a location. The coast near there is fantastic. I go to Sirolo and Portonovo quite often to kayak or SUP along the coast. Good luck with the search.
I'm redoing a basement in Massachusetts. Yours is more fun to watch.

This is impressive
Thank you @Friday_Trouble
If you talk with your hands then that may be the 28% in action😂

Hi @gfranco3361 - thank you for the tips. I will keep an eye on it. Maybe it is region by region that the rules change.

Hello @dinod1968 to be in driving distance of The Masters each year....fancy a house swap?😂
Hi @wernerdanler2742 . Thank you for the tips - I appreciate them. I've not seen a Peter Sellers movie in years....comedy genius.

Yes you can lift it out by yourself. It's a question of leverage.
