- Starting this summer, hidden fees at restaurants will be a thing of the past in California.
A new state law is cracking down on surprise surcharges many people have noticed added to their tabs.
Those surcharges have become a method restaurants use to lower costs and enhance employee income, however many consumers feel taken advantage of because of the lack of transparency.

How about Ban ALL Hidden Fees and Surcharge for ALL BILLS!!!
Some of those fees are there because SF has a living wage surcharge, and then you have the $20 min wage increase. People vote for this, but then wonder why it’s so expensive.
@boostedmaniac You're soo easily brainwashed by the news hahaha wow you're a great tik tok character hahah nice job want a treat doogie? Peoples votes don't count they just tell you that soo you can blame someone else hahaha they do that on purpose for you slow low iq people ahhaha
i like how they interview these idiots talking about they dont like extra fees....while their income is 40% taxed.

@@boostedmaniac Then increase the menu price. The problem is hiding the increase in prices and call it a fee.
Might as well display everything on the menu as $0.01, and add "material fee" "service fee" "rent fee" "business license fee" "liability insurance fee" "health insurance fee" "payroll tax fee" "income tax fee" "inspection fee" "plate fee" "cup fee" "table fee" "chair fee"
Restaurants don't just put hidden fees to lower costs nor to enhance employee income. Restaurant owners put it there simply for pure greed.
They put them there to show the money isn't going to them.
Nahhh the rocket scientist
Take a look at your last tv cable or internet bill. Lots of BS fees on there! 😡
Electric Also!! 100% correct!!
and utilities as well.
Most of those are government fees. They have no control over those.
Does this apply when you purchase a vehicle too?
@@supraondueces Of course!
California DMV is SO GUILTY of these JUNK fees .
Boycott all restaurants bcuz consumers should not pay for restaurant employees’ wages via tips/gratuities. Ban all those city fees that includes in the restaurant bills and fast food stores.
Cry babies hahaa they already giving us this and yall want more hahaaha this new Gen , hahaha all yall do is cry and cry and than when someone says something yall cry again haha
I went to buy a drink at a bar, drink was 12 dollars, plus 3 dollars for covenience, plus 3 for prossesing, plus 5 dollars for gratuity. Total came out to 25 dollars, I feel scamed with it costing double of what it said.
That's the price for you alcoholics
Mr Tempo is notorious for this. They will have a cover charge when they have live music. Then give you a "regular" menu so you are ordering drinks and food. Next thing you know when the bill comes and they hiked up their prices on drinks and food without telling you. According to them its because of the "live music." Bunch of scammers.
In this report they used the expression "lower costs" and "keep costs low" when talking about the fees that restaurants are adding, but those fees don't lower costs or keep costs low. If I charge you $30, but add $8 in extra fees, or I charge you $38 with no extra fees, it still costs $38. But the benefit to the business of the added fee is that people focus on the $30. Good riddance.
Please bring back top stories in the morning. We miss it
Nishiki Ramen 18% fee or 20% fee for big parties, never forget!
Wow that's insane!
Pack of Ramen 20 cents ,never forget
Not at the gas station. Check the pump. Make sure the decimal point is at the right spot. When youput in 70 dollars and the gauge says otherwise.
The reporter said that restaurants charge hidden fees to keep costs low? How does charging customers more keep costs low?
So being honest with your customers will be bad for business? You don't deserve to be in business then!
this needs to be applied on car dealerships. fuck their hidden fees and bullshit up charges
Outstanding 👍
You think the restaurants are bed the damn liquor stores in San Diego are worst. There tax fees are not always correct and they’ll just change the damn price on everything and anything.
In California fast food should be considered as dangerous as firearms and should be highly regulated.
Crab hut in Kearny Mesa charges 18% just so you could sit down and eat there 😓
Just Cook your own meals, which cost 1/3 of the price. If your cooking is good, ycs. Tip yourself 😅
And ?
@@CyrusTheVirus187that’s not including a tip do the math
@@N2UPROD and ?
@@CyrusTheVirus187 Vince is there any other words you know ?
A little confused but if the surcharges are still shown and not hidden can they charge them? For example a lot of restaurants will say automatic gratuity is included or 5% goes towards health care. Are these just going to be removed all together or if it's still on the menu they can still charge it.
I’m imagining the law will limit company to what can be added after the shown price, things like Gratuity and tax are fine.
Fees that upset me are things like concert tickets when the ticket shown are $25 but then $3 service fee + 5$ facility fee + $3 convenience fee then Tax 🙃
Or recently I went to a club where $1000 spend they added 20% gratuity + 7% tax which are common. $100 VIP service this was debatable. Then $55 for “Non-cash adjustment” The F is this fee.
Unfortunately, there is still other ways to get around it, what restaurants will do now is raise the cost of the food/drinks and the new price won’t justify the quality of the food. I would know I work at a restaurant in downtown. Either way you’ll still be paying more for less so this bill won’t really change things.
That's why I don't eat out anymore
Nahhhhhhh the rocket scientist
@@WorldCitizenWno one cares
So covenant for it not to affect government fees huh hmm
Arcos gas 35 cent fee😒
Little different. That's for DEBIT card use which is usually .10 cents cheaper than using credit. Depending on how many gallons you're buying that's a better deal than credit
For cut gas hahaha
@@CyrusTheVirus187 Never had a problem. Besides the octane is regulated by our good old government!
ban Health fee and kitchen fee and manager fee? can you guys cancel surcharges on our bills too?
Hodad's charges $1.99 service fee and its not listed anywhere in their menu.
Panera is the worst!
This may actually hurt the democrat causes such as min wage increase. If I was a restaurant, I would put the fee imposed by raising min wage to $20. Gas stations should list all the taxes and summer blend fees that are imposed by democrats.
Sound like Vegas shit food
America makes things complicated, pretty much every other country in the world has the listed price to include taxes and fees, if it says $30 then its $30 on the receipt, also other countries dont expect customers to pay employee wages aka tips
Than move out the country cry baby
90% of these fees go to the government.
Wouldn't doubt it in our staged system/earth.
And ?
Ban tax next
Sugar tax lol
Bag fee
Ban all these cry babies
Is this applicable to automatic gratuities / tips? Most resturants charge them automatically now.
How about hotel Resort Fee's ??
They need to do it for all businesses, from restaurants to hotels to car dealerships.
Why the hell would we take advice from San diego
America's finest city. Where are you? Ada, Oklahoma?
They should do that for cell phone companys too csuse they lie like a mf its only 60$ a month until you sign a 2 - 4 year contract oh turns out thats just for the plan plus 35$ per line then a then the service fee 5 $ and plan fee 10$ and dont forget your phone payment it was a free phone when you switch but you didnt qaulify on the credit limit increase so itll be 40$ a month oh and your gonna need insurance and now your paying 180 for a phone and plan they told ylu would be 60$ and now you owe 800 $ on a phone they told you is free and dont break the contract or well chargr you for the full 3 years 😂 fr fr them and payday loans 299% lol if you take out 1000$ loan and pay 500$ a month youd think 3 payment is 1500$ they should pay it off lol wrong you could pay then back 500$ a month for 10 month and still owe them more then the original 1000$ 😂 that means you paid 5000$ to borrow $1000 and still owe
Get a metro than cry baby
Get rid of ALL JUNK FEES, especially in Housing/Rent
Nahhh the rocket scientist
All this is going to do is not allow them to hide them until your bill arrives. To fight this, they'll just put a small sign somewhere hard to see and get you at the end.
It's called the small print incase you're just born yesterday
iam happy to see government going after this now the state should go after delivery apps like doordash because doordash Jack's up prices vs what you would pay in tge restaurant and why should we pay for a restaurant work health care why should we have to to tip what if the place you go to was nasty rude do they get a tip and and dashers why should they be tip after we pay frees taxes on are food doordash and all the rest of the apps should pay the tip I one time a dasher mess up my oder along with someone else oder it was not even my oder so should that person get a tip
Cry baby go walk and get your own food from now on than
Let me guess, the resort fees on hotels stay because they contribute more to the political campaigns?
You guessed wrong. Assembly bills 478 and 537 will ban resort fees starting July 1, 2024
@@major_west Nation-wide or state by state? I have not heard of either of these bills
And ?
@@CyrusTheVirus187 And what?
Doesn't the government makes more money if they put the hidden fee in the menu cost? So the consumer comes out paying more in taxes.
And ?
California is finally going forward but this is just one little step. Need more pls.
This will just make food go up.
