This is exactly why we don't go out to eat anymore, it's ridiculous!

A person walks into a restaurant and sees an advertisement; - ''In this restaurant, your descendant pays all the bills'"
Surprised by the pleasure, he orders all his favorite dishes... lobster, sushi, beef, fruit, wine. After all the dishes have been eaten, he is about to leave the restaurant, but the waiters bill him over $1,000.
He then pointed his finger at the advertisement and said that my descendant would pay all the bills.
The right said waiters ... but it's your grandfather's bill.

I actually prefer the way we do for example, in Denmark. You pay what’s on the menu card, no hidden taxes or fees! And no one is gonna scream at you if you don’t pay extra tip. I normally pay some tips if I get a little bit extra service from the waiter but I don’t feel bad if I don’t. It’s up to the owner to pay the decent pay to their employees and that’s what we normally do in Denmark?.

So, if i get crappy service, I still pay the 18% tip? Don't feel bad for restaurant owners. They have been pushing their employees' wages on the customer forever.

Just don’t dine out and these fees will stop eventually.

I plan to read the menu and if the fees are not posted then I'll ask the wait staff to make sure no fees are added to my bill. Ask before you order! You are not required to pay additional undisclosed fees! I also plan to pay in cash, many times they claim the fees are for charging the meal..

Update: I came back from vacation and went out to restaurants. The bill came with two prices, one if you paid cash and the other higher price if you paid with a cc. I paid with cash each time.

My friends made a list of these restaurants who does this and posted it on her Twitter account. Up to you guys if you still want to dine there. 44k response said they'd skip those places...2k still said they'll eat there. I skip liberal dump states in general.

I think im going to start asking for a "quote" for the food ordered. Like you get from a Plumber or Mechanic before the work is done.
Place all food and drink orders and ask for a copy of the receipt before the request is sent to the kitchen. If there is something on the receipt i dont like, say a 20% Service Fee, I can negotiate for a new estimate of for the cost of the requested services. I am getting really tired of undisclosed added cost. Sales tax is the only acceptable mandatory upcharge to the list price.
Another alternative would be paying in cash and if there is a fee that was not called out on the Menu. I think that gives you , the consumer, carte blanche to do the same. Add your own -5,- 10, 0r even -20% "Undisclosed Fee Fee" to the bill. Then just drop the cash rounded up the the nearest dollar and walk out.

I ate at a Chinese buffet. It's 25$ to eat. I got a glass of lemonade 4$ I paid my bill using my debit card. As I was walking towards the door I noticed the host immediately pulled a card from her apron, then stuck it in the card reader. I opened my card balance on my phone once I got outside. It showed that they secretly charged an extra 4$. On the receipt, with tax, my food was around 31$ that extra 4$ was no where on the bill. The fact they changed my card a second time, without my card being present. Wing stop is another restaurant that will do that. I pay with cash now when eating out.

Why put the 18% surcharge? Why not just raise everything on the menu by 18%? American needs to get rid of surcharge and tips. This needs to be law. Restaurants needs to raise their menu to prices that sustain their business. People will still go to the restaurants no maker if it is expensive. Just take a look at the people who are lazy and order expensive Uber Eats.

Because if they raised everything by 18% the prices would not make any sense and would look over priced. They get you with the added fees. You can travel to Japan, Korea, France, etc and the prices for a casual meal will be like $7-$15 without tip or fees meanwhile in America its about $15-$30 then you still got to tip, tax, and might even have to pay a service fee so it comes out to $25-$50 for a person.

@SOURMlLK In Japan, Korea and other places you get great service. In America, its subpar. Waiters are never around when youre looking for the check. First it was 10% and then 15%, 18%, 20% and some places are expecting 22% with subpar service.

I'm a bartender in a sushi Omakase place, and looking for another job. Understand this, post covid a lot of restaurants have switched formats in a "legal" way. Laws were changed, and if you pay a service fee, they technically can use that money to pay any and everyone in the restaurant. It doesn't go just to the person or people who took care of you. It is a scam. Usually, they will also ask for additional tips on top. They are money hungry, they steal from their staff, and use your earned tips for your extra efforts to pay all the staff. This should be illegal.

If you don't like it, leave the USA, and live in Japan. Get a good meal for $8. No tip or BS.

It's standard in UK for 12.5 to 20 % service charge to be added tto the bill but NOT always passed to the service staff. On a medium meal for 4 people this can easily reach 40 pounds, which considering a waiter/ess is serving a few tables at a time could easily provide them with about a hundred pounds per hour income; all well and good if it is service AND that money went to the waiter/esses. So what many of us increasiingly do is, when paying by card, deduct that 'service charge' from the total and leave it, plus or minus according to the quality of service, in cash as a tip. Yes, restaurants are increasingly sneaky and should not be but then again so many are doing much worse in the current economic climate and waiting staff are usually only paid minimum wage.

A service charge means you don't have to tip.
