Nice that the cashier was able to recognize it as counterfeit. I don't use cash that often. The last time I did was a few weeks ago. I made a purchase for $25 and change; I paid with two $20 bills. The cashier mistakenly entered $50 as the amount tendered. I didn't notice that but I saw her removing the wrong amount of change for me and I interrupted her to tell her what the correct amount should be, which is when I noticed her error on her computer screen. She wasn't permitted to take my word for what the correct amount should be, nor was she allowed to do the arithmetic on her own (by any method: in her head, with paper and pencil, using the calculator app on her phone or using Google). She was required (store policy) to call a manager to cancel the purchase and redo the transaction. I should have taken the extra $10 change instead of standing there for an unnecessary 5 minutes.
@keensoundguy,. You did the right thing. If a cashier makes a mistake I call it to their attention. I look at it like I don't want to be cheated, why should I cheat them. If their register doesn't add up at the end of their shift, some places make the cashier pay it out of their own money. I worked in an automotive machine shop and would ring up customers. I would then count back their purchase price to the change I was returning to them. Older cash register. It checked my figures and let the customer know that I was giving them the correct change. All the best and may God bless.
Years ago I went thru bank drive thru to cash my payroll check. Cashier overpaid me by about $40. I told her she made a mistake and she became very rude and told me to leave. I turned around and went into bank and told manager about the mistake. He called in the cashier with her tray and transaction tape. Sure enough, her tray was $40 short. She ended up getting fired. Manager gave me a free ink pen...hmmm, maybe I should have just kept the cash...lol

This happened at a store I worked at back in 2001. The paper is authentic, but the original print was removed, and the 100 dollars print was printed on the 5 dollars bill.
When I was in college I worked at a gas station in South Carolina, and this obese old white guy came in and threw $100 bill on the counter and asked for a pre-pay of $5 in gas. It was RIGHT after a shift change. I did not yet have change for it. So, I told him I couldnt take that large bill I only had $50 in change in my drawer. He caled me all kinds of names and cursed me out. He waddled out of the store and I looked down and saw the $100 bill was still there. I put it to the side and waited until my shift ended. He never came back. So that day I made an extra $100 tax free.

@@mikes-wv3em that’s a 50/50 depending on if it’s a good enough counterfeit to get by the machine. Even if it does. now your face is on camera depositing counterfeit change in your account. Smart and alert cashier. When I worked in retail many decades ago, I experienced firsthand several money scams. Some tactics never change. Scammers with counterfeit bills generally try to purchase something of small value (as reported in this video), so they get maximum change in real currency. They hand you ‘big $ denomination bills’, while claiming they have nothing smaller, and buy the cheapest thing in the store. Red Flag Warning!
I'll be sure not to do this. I sometimes get $100 bills from the atm but need to pay someone in smaller change (usually babysitting), and so I'll buy a water bottle to get smaller bills. I had no idea it's also what people with counterfeit money do, but it makes sense. Now I'll feel weird doing it to get smaller bills to pay the babysitter.
@@BellaJoyeuse Do not feel weird.. Do not let others scare you to use money the government makes. We I live they are afraid to even take 20 dollar bills. All planned.
@BellaJoyeuse: If you can't select $20 bills from the ATM, then choose to withdraw twice to get $80 & $20, or $60 & $40. If the ATM dispenses $10 bills, too, get $90 & $10.
The smarter counterfeiters know this and are less likely to make purchases like that, they also know cashiers are too heavily reliant on those counterfeit detection pens and use that to their advantage

That’s why it’s just value given to a piece of paper I shouldn’t have to tell you this
Not even close. This must be done by an armature. Very first thing you need to check is color shifting 100 on bottom right. Color changes if you see it in a different angle. That's just a flat green ink. 2nd, it's missing a "USA 100" vertical security thread on the left side. 3rd, no Benjamin Franklin watermark image on the right. Remember those three things.
The different bills and series of bills have different images. Also, some of the newer designs use different color linen and have more anti-counterfeit measures, such as watermark, color-shifting ink, polymer strip, hologram, etc.
The big giveaway was that on the higher denominations. 2 letters should have started the serial number. Not one. Only the $1 and $2 uses X********A (example) whereas $5 & up uses XX********A.
But you're obviously confused about what happened in this story. The counterfeit $100 has the proper images printed on it, including the right serial number, copied from a real $100 bill.
How could they reproduce all the watermarks and other security features that copiers can't reproduce? Some printers will refuse to make a print of money.
Maybe someone paid her with this bill and she is just really angry she is losing so much money! I too would be LIVID if I suddenly lost that much money because someone else is a crook!
This is an OLD method of counterfeiting. The idea is that the paper used to print authentic currency has a certain, specific makeup and feel to it. Wash away the ink and print whatever you like on it, and you have a bill that feels like the real thing. As this store worker proved, it's not 100% foolproof, but if used in a busy environment, it has a better chance to get accepted. Actually, I'm surprised that the job was done so poorly. It has long been a major concern that advances in printing by home computers would only exacerbate the situation.
@@rebeccanajera-moya3621 it's an old $100 bill there is no chip. not sure about the serial number but printers are designed to recognize you're printing a bill and stop the printing.
One thing that gave away the false $100 note is that the serial number contained only one prefix letter. When the "big-headed" designs started appearing in the 1990s, an additional prefix letter was added to indicate the series (i.e., year the signature combination was approved). The $1 and $2 notes are the only denominations now printed that lack this additional prefix letter. (BTW all the older older "small-headed" designs lack this prefix letter, but these older designs are now rarely seen in actual circulation, having been either shredded by the Federal Reserve Banks or in the hands of paper money collectors--but they are still legal tender at their face value).
Why do you think UK, Australia & others make the different value bills different sizes to each other? I thought for blind people but it stops this counterfeiting too. Now we use plastic money instead of paper too

He caled me all kinds of names and cursed me out. He waddled out of the store and I looked down and saw the $100 bill was still there. I put it to the side and waited until my shift ended. When I worked in retail many decades ago, I experienced firsthand several money scams. Some tactics never change.
Good thing all notes in the US are the exact same with just a different number. Makes the job of these people a lot easier.

It has long been a major concern that advances in printing by home computers would only exacerbate the situation.
you can wash away the ink, but the imprint is still there.
@@rebeccanajera-moya3621 it's an old $100 bill there is no chip. not sure about the serial number but printers are designed to recognize you're printing a bill and stop the printing.
It's not paper it's linen. And the US is one of the only countries whose money is printed on the same size bill no matter what the denomination.
@rebeccanajera-moya3621: There's no metal chip in the $100 bill. The newer bills have a polymer strip.
It’s also a lot more likely to get accepted by those cashiers who just use the pen to test bills
(BTW all the older older "small-headed" designs lack this prefix letter, but these older designs are now rarely seen in actual circulation, having been either shredded by the Federal Reserve Banks or in the hands of paper money collectors--but they are still legal tender at their face value).
the store i work at doesn't accept old 100s exactly for this reason. straight from corporate.
