    There’s a lot of mechanics in here calling this guy names. Mechanics I definitely wouldn’t let touch your German.
    A car being expensive to maintain versus being unreliable are too very different things. The issue is people who think they can afford them buy them, run them to the ground, realise the maintenance cost, proceed to shit the bed, call the car unreliable, and then sell it onto some poor bloke who’s not got pay a lot to get it all sorted and now he thinks it’s unreliable.

      That still doesn’t explain the cheap plastic parts in the engine bay that will inevitably break no matter how well you take care of the car. Keep justifying paying double the price for half the reliability just to show off though 👍

      @@57Nights Hey buddy, if the parts are actually cheap and plastic like (key word being cheap), how exactly is it going to cost me twice as much?
      I have an 2018 M4, it’s never had any issue with “engine bay plastics”, what’s expensive is new tires when you have as much fun in a car as I do but guess what, I can afford the tires so I don’t actually care.
      If you want cheap maintenance stick to driving your Toyotas, but I myself will remain in my Germans.
      If your truly happy about having a cheap maintenance car good for you, but why are you on here saying I’m paying twice as much to show off. It honestly sounds like your pissed off you can’t afford a German and I don’t blame you I was too when I couldn’t afford one but I didn’t put my time and energy into writing negative comments.

      @@guccipig2782 nah fr if you’re not a loser who spends 1k+ at the shop it’s quite easy and cheap to maintain a BMW. Most ignorant drivers just run it to shit and by 100k miles when most of your major components are recommended to be replaced, even stated in the manual. Most people who are dumb asf and do no research on their car but accelerate everywhere they go, end up trashing and destroying the car beyond repair. Keep up with it and it will keep up with you.

      But if there is something wrong with a European car even if it's just electronics, most will freak out and say they're unreliable.
      Most people have a high tolerance for problems in a Japanese car than a European car just because they are seen as "more reliable"

      @@WitchYuki22 everyone overlooks the faults of their favourite brands, the same way they overlook the faults of their partners. If said thing ticks enough boxes the rest can be accepted as a compromise. It doesn't have to be all about reliability, but I was just making a joke about those 2 brands because I like them and they rank number 1 & 2 in the most reliable car brands last time I googled it, but everyone is entitled to their own preference

    German engineer here. We dont build them like we used to. It's not the drivers that changed since Mercedes diesels ran 1000000 miles on the same oil.

      That’s what happens when companies cut budget costs to their cars. And this isn’t just specific to German Cars, but every car manufacutre you could think of. They’d rather mass produce 2 tons worth of plastic garbage than to take the time to engineer something that could last a literal lifetime.
      Sad world we live in, but what can you do🤷

      I own a 1982 300d and a 1990 420sel both with over 300k miles and I can confirm german cars from this era were tanks. I took extreme care of my 2018 bmw 328i and it had a water pump failure at 60k and several electrical issues. They simply dont make them like they used too

      Youre not an engineer.
      A car will maybe do 100k miles if you change the filters, but over 1 million is utter bs. The most reliable BMW engine ever is the M57 and this was built between 1998 and 2008.

      ​@derunfassbarebielecki4721 He was talking about the old Mercedes diesels which were far more reliable than any BMW engine and have multiple documented engines/vehicles making over 1 million miles. There were also quite a few documented cases of 9c1 chevy caprices and other American v8s that made it past 1 million miles..

      DIY is the answer man, then you’d be shocked that the oil change for example is in reality 3$ more than the Toyota, and once you replace other parts you’ll see the massive difference in quality and you’ll never want a Japanese economy car again.

    I’ve treated my 335i perfectly, low miles, early oil changes and even grandma driven, and it still leaks power steering fluid😂

      Power steering leaks are common in all cars, friend had a rav4 with a never ending power steering leak, and my parents had a Honda crv that leaked power steering fluid onto the belt, and tore it up, but the engine was already just a ticking time bomb.
      No car is perfect, but just pray God is on your side

      oil changes and grandma driven doesnt have anything to do with a power steering fluid leak. its the age of the hose its probably very old they dry out and crack from the heat of the engine bay. just find the bad hose and replace it for $20

      You still will have issues on the 335i regardless. Vanos, coil packs, water pump and oil cooler leaks. They are all fairly easy items to address. The turbo wastegate loves to rattle on older models

    I’m a mechanic and work at a shop that specializes in German cars , bmw Audi and Mercedes . For the most part the mechanical stuff and drive train is reliable . Biggest issues we run into are electrical . We had an Audi that went into limp mode because the hood sensor went bad and read that the hood was open so it wouldn’t let you drive faster than 10-15 mph . They have tons of sensors and modules . Almost twice as an average car .

    It absolutely is the car. You can drive a corolla, camry, Lexus, Honda etc., like a “German car” and still have no issues. A car made cheap with crap quality control leads to mechanical issues down the line regardless of if the service is kept up

      Reliability is the ability of a component or system to work under certain conditions for a certain period of time. Japanese cars are by definition more reliable because they can perform their functions at the same rate German cars can but for a longer period of time or with a wider range of conditions. If I treated an Italian super car like it was meant to for that matter it would be just as reliable.

      @@bmw803they last 800,000 kilometers on our roads which are one of the worst roads out of any country. and that is with shit fuel and engine oil. BMWs (or german cars for that matter) can’t even last 20,000 kilometers here with expensive oil and best octane fuel

      Here's the way I see it, if a car doesn't have any known major mechanical recall then its reliable. Doesn't matter if its from Hyundai or from Toyota.
      If you wan't ANY older car to give you at minimum 5 trouble-free years here's what you need to do:
      Replace every single gasket on the engine
      Replace all the coolant hoses
      Replace the plastic coolant bits
      Replace the belts
      Replace the engine & transmission mounts
      And there you go you will not have to open your hood again for a long long time unless a random sensor fails or something. But like I was saying the gaskets are the most important thing, in any older car you get your number one priority should be changing out that old dried out valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket and any other random little gasket.

      If you drive your bmw like you drive your toyota, they are both reliable. Bmw can easily take the abuse that corolla can take. But can the corolla give the same performance that bmw give? I dont think so. People say things like that all the time. BmWs CaNt TaKe ThE AbUse that corolla takes. Nah bullshit, get to 60 in 13 seconds in your corolla man. Bimmers can get there in like 6-7 seconds. It actually takes much more abuse than corolla takes just getting to 60. You get what you pay.

      This just isn’t true. You can do all the maintenance in the world and take good care of your vehicles, there is nothing you can do that will stop the inevitable electronic failures that happen in expensive European cars. The only issues I have had have all been electronic or sensor related failures and because they are so complex and interconnected it is always a big and expensive job to fix a relatively minor problem.

    I think the problem lies in people overspending their money to afford a BMW and not being able to pay for all the repairs and yearly inspections, thus they ignore those and sell it on and suddenly you have check engine lights lighting up because the previous owner was a donut who never changed the oil or something because it's too expensive... Sure wasn't too expensive getting that credit to buy the damn thing, now was it?

      Yeah it’s a race motor with tight tolerances. Takes around 60 to 80k miles for them to fail. Show me another 500hp engine that doesn’t need major maintenance at that point. It’s also called the s85 because not all e60’s have the v10 and the rest don’t have rod baring issues. I can tell you don’t know much about the topic 😂

      Literally what he’s talking about. Every single e60 was driven hard and not let warmed up and revved cold for stupid 10 second videos. Rod bearing failure literally comes from excess stress due to cold oil. Watch that TH-cam channel that tests cold and hot oil and tell me if you think cold oil can make a car run let alone a damn bmw

      @@tunanocrust5089 I literally own a 2009 M5 but go on. One of my friends has an M6 with the same engine, preventative replace on the major risk parts is whats needed. Even if you give the car the utmost care, things will still break over time and mileage so the only thing you can do is replace parts at certain intervals. That is not reliability by the standards that a *Daily driver* should meet. Its not a race car, its a sports sedan to be driven regularly

      @@moo.7643 Thats just 1 of the numerous major issues with that car. I own one as the 2nd owner, bought from a friends father. Keep in mind that people bought this as a daily driver, not a weekend track car. This is a family sedan. If the car is not reliable based on German luxury sedan standards, it is not reliable. The same generation RS6 or E63 were objectively more reliable even though they still encounter issues your average German luxury car does

    My 5.7 Liter LS1 in my Trans-Am is by far one of the best engines! I've done sooo many 120+mph pulls over the years and the thing has NEVER broken down. 2002 runs like a champ

    The problem with social media is that it gives guys like this a platform to babble nonsense. Im a mechanic, german cars are in fact unreliable and a pain the butt to maintain. All theyre good for is driving fast and aggressive in style for a few years and giving off the false image that you have a money tree growing in your yard, because unless you are leasing it, you don’r want to go through the expenses of having to maintain it 5 years down the line. If you must drive luxury drive a Lexus. If’s a Toyota. Ut’s reliable. You can have your cake and eat it too.

    My 1985 vw gti had 535k miles on the original 1.8 8v engine when I bought it. I also drove it about 2 1/2 hours back to my house in its current state after sitting for years. I’d really love to see any newer car do that without swapping and engine or tranny along the way

    Owner of a 1988 audi. Original engine with 500.000 km . Only problems were a turbo went out at 470.000km 2 radiator hoses . Just regular maintenance and it wont die on you and I push the car to the limit a lot because it is a very fun car to drive and handles really well.

Or just buy some aftermarket ones. You're lucky a lot of people have the A4. So you'll find a lot of support for it.

      My father has a +2017 Q5 zero problems. My 500hp 2009 n54 335i also had zero problems, because I bought it stock and low miles from the first owner who was 40 years old. No shit a +300hp vehicle is gonna have problems if you're buying it used from some 20 year old.

    I own 2 rx7s a skyline and a f30 bmw, all are super reliable and I beat the piss out of them. But I make sure to keep up on maintenance and treat them how you are supposed to. People are just ignorant now and think there’s only one reliable car

    Why is it, Europeans don't face as much problems with German cars, most cars you see that are young timers on the road are Mercedes, BMW and Audi oh and VW of course. Oh Japanese do fine here as well.

      Because Europeans fuel up with 95, if it needs 95, and not just cheapest option (86 in America - equivalent to 92). Because they change oil 5k miles/7k km, or every half a year (wow, just like manufacturer recommends). Because if there’s a recall, they comply. And if there’s a common known problem with the engine/transmission they don’t delay fixing it. Another reason is manual transmission (less complicated, and teaches you to actually take care of the car, like parking on the hill). Talking about previous part, good luck finding a single American in 1000 that doesn’t just put car into P on the hill, or ever uses hand brake (if the car is not manual ofc). All in all, cars are just abused and neglected in US, and for that reason anything with 75k mi (or 100k km) is considered too high mileage, and most used cars are sold for very cheap

    Today its a misconception that BMWs are unreliable, B48/58, S58/68 are some of the most reliable modern day engines of any car manufacturer. Preventative maintenance is the key to how long these engines last, negligence and laziness will only exacerbate issues.
    BMWs with N54/55, N63 these engines were extremely unreliable and simply put terrible. Weak timing chains, bad charge pipe, bad vanos, warping of the headers, throttle body issues, oil pump, fuel pump, coolant return lines, burns oil etc these engines were a nightmare. Hence why a 16 year old BMW is stupid cheap chances are it will cost $10,000 to fix any issues and an additional $5,000 a year to keep it running.

    If you’re a DIY kind of guy you’ll notice mechanics rip us off on German cars in the USA. Ex. BMW DIY oil changes cost 3$ more for the oil and filter because they hold slightly more oil. You’ll also notice the absolutely massive difference in quality of the parts down to the cabin and engine air filters. Everything is way better in the German car. BMW warranties their cars from rust for 12 years and 100,000$ miles. Japanese cars can’t do that because they would pay out on every car they sold in a cold climate.

    I have a bmw 323i e90, owned it for 4 years now, been the most reliable car I've had. One takeaway from owning the car is don't do work on it yourself unless you have experience, it can be costly to fix if you mess up. But if you service it regularly and keep on top of small issues that pop up they last for ages.

      Okay you've owned a BMW for 4 years you don't say new or used I'm going to say no and you're already talking about fixing the small issues that come up that's not reliable then you understand what reliable is.
      I'll give you a little bit of an example personal example I bought a 2013 Prius 2 years ago he had 160,000 mi on and was used to tow a boat inflatable but still it now has 210 I had to put a water pump in it.
      I mean that's pretty reliable especially for vehicle that was used to tow an inflatable boat yet is an econo car.
      And while it doesn't get like raced I cruise 70 80 mph but I'm not trying to have a race from every stoplight this car drives off road there's hills if you want to call them service driveways that I'm unable to drive up forward because the tires spin so I go in reverse foot to the floor bouncing scraping the underside car does this all the time still going things loaded usually as it's used as a service vehicle.
      4-year-old BMW small issues that pop up like..... Got a 10-year-old car with 200,000 mi on it many receipts prior to my ownership and nothing's been changed

      For it to work, not necessarily. BMWs might fail sooner if the owners don’t follow scheduled maintenance, but with any car you should know the scheduled maintenance, and what you should expect to replace sooner than later.
      It’s no surprise if you don’t change the transmission fluid after 100k miles you might see problems with your “reliable” car, and sell it as fast as you can when it could’ve easily been fixed by changing the transmission fluid.

      not entirely the case,
      every screw .. every part ... every piece on your car (or any other device for that matter, printers are a good example) is meant to be unscrewed and screwed back in a certain number of times (maybe 10 times maybe 1000 times) if a car (or a printer) has a piece that it's only accessible by taking off 5 or 6 otherm pieces, then something is BOUND to break in the process, japanese cars are reliable because their parts are (usually) simpler to access and replace without taking the whole thing apart so statistically there's less chance of something going bad in the process
      on the other hand, German cars had a reputation of being VERY RELIABLE in the 90s and early 2000s because you could work on them without taking them all apart, unfortunately nowadays MOST CARS (even Toyotas and Mitsubishis and KIAs ...) are becoming complicated to maintain therefore less reliable (some less than others), it's just physics

Biggest problem with German cars is electronics and them making their cars complicated using twice as many sensors as any other car brand.     BMWs used to be reliable. It doesn’t matter if you don’t push it. They have plastic intake manifolds on a turbo high compression engine. They just break easily.

    true to a certain extent. some cars are just going to, for example, get leaks and things will break easier because of materials. i dont have to worry about water pump issues or timing chain issues in my acura tsx but for my vw jetta i do. why? because of the heavy use of plastics in the vw

      They burn oil from day one, it's in the owner's manual. Got a Stage 1 S4 says in the manual it burns 1l every 1000 miles depending on the driving conditions.

I have seen that most Japanese made things are among the very best in quality. Cars are one of those things that only time will tell how reliable and we'll built the car is. There are many things that can go wrong with cars because of the many components and the Japanese have so far made the most reliable for the past 35+ years.

    My 91 735iL had 374k on the clock when I sold it to buy my truck, and it was still running perfectly.
    Just keep the fluids changed and fix the leaks that happen and you're good.

    I have a 2015 BMW 320i XDrive with now 110k miles on it and never had a single issue outside of 1 small mechanical thing with the passenger seat. Always maintained on time with original BMW parts and BMW suggested oil

    It is absolutely about the car brand. Different brands may use more desirable tolerances in their engines, the over engineering of the lubrication system, quality of the materials used, etc…

    The man talking in this video , is talking out of his a.rse, he’s totally clueless.
    The real reason why German (or any European) car is unreliable is because they are unnecessarily complicated and over engineered, which means more break downs, plus the fact the mechanic (at your expense), will take more time to diagnose and fix the problem. To keep a car reliable, you have to keep it as simple as possible.
    Japanese cars (especially Toyotas), are very reliable, because they are more simple.

    You CAN take care of a BMW and keep it working, it just it breaks down more often than a Japanese or other reliable brands, so yes, it is less reliable actually. Of course, having a reckless previous owner makes the situation a lot worse (don't ask me how I know)

    Finally an explanation for why you hear all the hate on German cars which are far better. They last way longer where I live than a Japanese car if you follow the maintenance manual. We use so much road salt in buffalo your Japanese car will crack in half after 15 years vs a German car with solid rust protection which will still be solid. They’re won’t even have visible rust, but your Toyota or Honda will look like shit and not be safe at all.

    I've worked on all sorts of cars and despite what others in the comments say, he's right. Properly maintained German cars are solid and well worth the money. I've seen more issues with American and Japanese cars, surprisingly. Their owners are usually pig-headed and don't take care of them. "Why is my Camry breaking down so much??" Well sir, you haven't changed the oil in 15k miles and you beat on it thinking it'll stand the test of time. Of course it's gonna break cuz you don't take care of the damn thing like you're supposed to with ALL cars

    I owned BMW, modification:
    intercooler, charge pipe, catless downpipe, boast pipe, BLow off valve, muffler delete and stage 1 tuned, is a beast. 100k plus kilometres without any issues. Some folks saying negative about BMW they don’t own one. Only hear say. . 😂

    This is just saying that as long as you fix everything when it breaks it will be fine, it doesn’t highlight how German cars are constantly in need of expensive repairs, but yes if you take it to a specialist they will keep it going reliably by fixing it all the time and that costs a lot of money

      It varies manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model, it’s not as simple as Japanese > German in terms of reliability. I’ve seen certain BMWs at the top of reliability surveys while a Nissan X-Trail has been at the bottom.

    Bmw and reliability don't exactly go hand in hand, anything made after 2008 is pretty much dormant electrical problems, and if you really wanna get upset over something, be upset over automotive manufacturers making iron blocks with aluminum heads. If you want reliability get a late 90's-early 2000's truck, Chevy 1500 is a good option, find one with a blown transmission for $1000
