  • CORRECTION: The button next to the shutter release is a spot metering
    button.
I have been meaning to review the Canon T90 for a number of years now and finally had one dropped into my eager little hands.
I also test out Kentemere Pan 100 for the first time, a budget film.

The button to the left of the shutter release, is a spot metering button. You can take upto 9 readings and the camera will average them out. For a backlit portrait, meter twice on your subject and once on the bright area behind them. You should then see the spot readings, in the viewfinder on the right. You can use the safety shift, if you want to add or subtract some exposure.
The backlight switch is under the palm flap.

@@AzrielKnight To add to that, the arrow buttons on the top right side of the back are for "highlight" and "shadow" correction. Basically, an easier way to correct the exposure if you want a brighter or darker picture than the "correct" exposure would give. The multispot metering is pretty nice, you can see the range between the brightest and darkest spot metering you did. The spot metering button also works for flash photography (flash exposure lock), plus the highlight/shadow buttons to control the ambient light exposure during flash (for the background). The T90 was damn advanced for its time.

@@AzrielKnight As a long time user of Canon A1, I switched to the T90 1 year ago. It became my favorite FD camera for the spot metering system @Ian Hand and @freiber described.
It's really easy to use and give great results, I was astonished by my first roll shot with it : Kodak Tmax 400 with the 85mm 1.2. Sharp result and very contrasty. I would advise you to give it a try with this feature :)
      Cheers !

@@The.nitro.keeper Just curious, which three you've landed on? Up until this week I've had four Canon SLR's in rotation, with the EOS 1N (B&W) and EOS 3 (colour) getting most of the action. The other two are the F-1 (B&W) and the A-1 (colour). Depending on my mood, I feel like using the EOS bodies is either "the best of both worlds" or "half-assing as a film shooter". I suspect the T90 is going to feel like I'm 75% of the way towards the fully authentic film shooting experience.

So nice to see a video featuring the T90.
There is a T70 and a T90 in my collection as well as an f/1.4 50mm lens and a few other lenses too of course. For both cameras, I don't feel the need to bracket - I trust the internal light meters, because I have never had any shots turn out underexposed - or overexposed for that matter.
The T90 is big and heavy, but to me, it's a favorite for everything but street photography, and for street photography, I prefer rangefinders anyway.

I've long appreciated the Canon FD system, and have been happy with several AE-1 bodies and an EF over the years. But the slick 80s styling of the T90 really appeals to me, and I just bought one on eBay with a 25mm f2.5 lens, and this video was pretty inspiring.
I also love rural and farm settings, and the image starting at 18:40 is outstanding.

Yay! Another D780 user! It's a great camera and as you said, I can (and do) use the same 70s lenses on my D780 as well as my Nikkormat EL, a great pleasure.
I found a bug though, with the D780 and old manual lenses (AI and AI-S) when trying to meter in live-view with exposure preview enabled. The LCD doesn't compensate correctly! I've made a video on it (only video on my channel) and even gotten Nikon's attention on it but they haven't yet patched it in firmware...
If you could maybe do a video on it, it could become more commonly known and perhaps get corrected, then the D780 could rise to its true potential...

Really liked those shots - I was really curious to see how you were going to approach the subject given the constraints, and you didn't disappoint.
Glad you had some fun with the T90 - agree with your sentiments - it's loud :) To be honest I didn't care for the ergonomics compared to old school designs. Something about using it made want old school dials rather than push buttons and even though it is very robust it felt a bit plasticky in the hand. Much prefer the older F1 and F1 new, but I guess if you want the FPS and (probably?) better metering its a good choice.

I remember when the T90 debuted. 1986. I purchased a F1New AE but looked at the T90 also. It was truly canons future, just didn’t have AF yet. I remember it wasn’t cheap and lots of people were pissed cannons AF cameras would come out a year or two later and thus disconnecting the FD mount. Still it doesn’t look much different than my EOS1n. Finding a good condition model which works I’ve heard is difficult.

The point in the film development cookbook was really interesting - Whilst I've got the same book, I must have missed that point. I generally use around 400ml of ID-11 (Ilford's D76 equivalent) for a single 35mm roll, but might need to up that to 500ml. I also use rodinal stand development sometimes, which I see indicates a minmum of 1000ml. Will definitely have to go back again and re-read this section. As for the Kentmere 100 - I've used it a lot and agree, it's fine as a basic film, and the price reflects that. I've bought 100ft bulk rolls which translates to about US$4/roll and that's not too bad. So, not the best, but a good budget friendly film.

I got a T90 together with a T50 and a bunch of lenses for 20 Euros recently, and I really like it! You're correct though, it is quite loud, and it is also quite heavy. On the upside, the shutter speeds are still very accurate after all those years, and for a film camera, it is quite fast. I'd recommend it for anything other than street photography for anyone looking to get a cheap camera for use with FD lenses, as it is a lot easier to get it on a very low budget, compared to the more well-known models.
Can't recommend the T50 though. I really don't get what that one is supposed to be for ;-)

      @steven1000000000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's a really great price for a working T90 as they're normally 100+ Euros on ebay. As for the T50 - It was a entry level T series camera. Basically and upgrade to a point and shoot. The T series Canons are interesting with the T50 being the entry level, automatic only. The T70 being an OK camera with programmed and manual modes, the T80 mostly being mostly automated, but with a very unique set of auto-focus FD lenses that only worked with this body. And the T90 ("the tank") being a pro level camera in its day. The T60 was a weird outlier in the sries which I think was produced later by Cosina but still an entry level camera. Because the T series are a bit of a mixed bag of cameras (and some considered as pretty ugly), they're sometimes very affordable and for that reason, I keep an eye out for them, even if it's just to buy a lens attached to a body. That being said, the T70 and T90 are still very usable today, depending on what you're after.

@@steven1000000000 When I got them they were advertised as "two old cameras" - I guess that's why they were so cheap and no one else bothered with them.
As far as the T50 is concerned, I just don't personally align with the concept of a fully automatic SLR camera with manual focus. I'm pretty sure that even these days most people use their 1000 Euro plus DSLRs in fully automatic mode only, so I guess there's a market for everything.
I do have to admit though that I kind of like the "so ugly it's pretty" look of the T50!
