The History of London,
Walter BESANT (1836 - 1901)
Walter Besant was a novelist and historian, and his topographical and historical writings, ranging from prehistoric times to the nineteenth century, were probably best known through the detailed 10-volume Survey of London published after his death. This earlier single volume covers, in less depth, the whole period from prehistory until the 19th century. The book appears originally to have been written for boys, and, indeed, the chapters are called "Lessons". However, it is a very readable history and provides a fascinating insight into both London's past and the government of the City at the time the book was written (1894). (Summary by Ruth Golding)

Only a minute into the narrative and my jaw hit the floor when I learned the origin of "Ludgate" ! This bodes well !
Fascinating and well-narrated history...thanks!
Awesome! Thank you! Such great lessons! 👍
Wonderful book! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you very much for this. An interesting, concise history, read exceedingly well.
4:35:00 amazing people couldn't appreciate history regardless of who built it, we should always be able to separate ourselves and able to appreciate art and architecture apart from what created it because meanings and usages of buildings can change over time and the care and work that went into building it regardless of the you should always be respected.
Well London's mayor seems to want to smash it all down again, which doesn't warm my heart...
And that is why people shouldn't get away with toppling statues that commemorate people from our history. Whether you agree with what they stand for or not, they are there for a reason.
Have we seen any statue that the right aren't keen on being wrecked yet? I don't think we have tbh.
I love you LondonTown
Thank you very much. I was wondering if you could make subtitles available? ❤

Thank you for this video
Very good, a lot of information that brings together facts that a casual visit would not highlight. One constructive criticism, the notes at the end of the book are intended to be read in conjunction with the main text to explain something that would otherwise disrupt the flow of the book. There really isn't much point in reading them all out in a stream after finishing the book.
If Dr Watson & Sherlock Holmes were sitting at 221b Baker Street waiting for a case to turn up - this is what Mr Conan Doyle might have had them reading
Also this was written exactly 40 years since the Cholera outbreak & the Broad Street pump. And decent sewers hadn't been there long..
SO NICE

Incorrect, Caesar did not Conquer Britain. Emperor Claudius launched a third and final invasion of Britain. Four Roman legions, led by General Aulus Plautius, landed in three locations on the coast of Britain - Richborough, Lympne and Dover.
