Well said. I've trained dogs for 45 years and we have to be open to tools to fix different issues. Also we must continue to stay open minded and continue to learn. Like your passion and attitude. Thank you .

The whole "purely positive" movement has been a good thing and put dog training under the spotlight and forced everyone to look at their methods and re-evaluate how we do things. We're kind of moving into the "post purely positive" era having adopted all the best stuff the positive people have developed.
I started out as a clicker trainer 15 years ago, 100% force free, lots of free shaping, no corrections. Most of the best trainers out there are striving for less corrections, less force, less pressure, more finesse etc. Hopefully at some point we'll all adopt the best practices we can and share our information instead of competing against each other. We all want the same thing at the end of the day right ?
I'm willing to learn anything that works, is fair to the dog and agrees with my ethics. I like to call it "evidence based" training.

Hey, I want to say that I am totally agree with you. I have a sensitive dog before, she barks at people because she is fearful. I hired a trainer who only trained her with "purely positive reinforcement" and the result was slow and it didn't fix my dogs problem. I used to believe that positive reinforcement is the only way because I have watched so many of Zak's videos. You are 100% correct, limiting to only one kind of method is stupid. I think it is kind of a marketing stuff, so that trainers can be divided into different groups.

I'm a pure positive raw, gluten free, organic vegan diet dog trainer who relies solely on the power of Chi energy. I can train most gluten free organic raw vegan diet dogs without ever meeting them. I have had almost 100% success working with digital photographs of my clients' dogs. I'm really expensive, but I'm worth it. Don't feed Meat! Dogs are not wolves! ;-)

Pretty good video and I agree with you for the most part. Anyone who calls themelf a purely positive trainer is probably someone who doesn't have a lot of experience to begin with. Trainers should have several different methods for certain behavior modifications and basic obedience. But with that said not every dog a trainer sees is going to be a reactive resource guarder with a bite history so it really is up to the dog's owner to do the homework as to what kind of trainer they're looking for.

@@Ihh956 she uses negative punishment. She for example stops playtime with the dog if it does something she doesn’t want. Or turns away and removes whatever the dog wants when it is misbehaving.

So are u saying that the positive reinforcement training doesnt work on every dog if you stick with it? I guess it depends what your definition of negative or positive means.. But are u saying that if after a period of time positive reinforcement doesnt work I should switch to negative positive????

I don’t think your comparison is really a good one because cars aren’t sentient beings. Trainers only offer force free training because it’s the kind, cruel-free option. It’s not a trainers job to inflict pain on animals in a way many consider un-necessary just in the name of being versatile. Your comparison also expresses a lot of frustration at not getting results quickly enough. Change takes time and effort. That’s how you know you’re doing it right! Sometimes you need to start with wipers if that’s where the foundation is. Magic fixes don’t exist for people or for dogs!

Yea well positive Reinforcement works for absolutely most things. Whats the oposite choice? Theres alot of ways to train a dog with positivity, you can be effective with everything aalong as you read the problem correct. This story is not relateable, it fits maybe one in a thousand rather than to normalize this sort of thing. In my mind you can absolutely correct a biting dog with a touch or point on the nose to get attention and immediately after complement the stop of the biting and call it positive reinforcement.

    • @InsideTheDogWorld
      @InsideTheDogWorld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Meaning Positive Reinforcement is not being "Purely" one thing. You can practise in alot of different ways in this topic. Its just about complementing a behaviour that you do want until the dog realise, hey its more fun that Im like this cuz then I get treats and Im allowed to run around or w/e. If my dog leash pull, I eithee just turn and start walking home, or I simply stop. When she's calm I tell her 'yes' and keep walking. She will choose walking nicely otherwise it gets boring. Ofcourse other factors can turn into play like handeling energy before you go out etc but you get my point.

Thanks for the feedback, I was shedding light on purely positive , not positive. Positive reinforcement training still uses negative punishment.
Also I'd love to learn your nose bopping method when a 120lb canine is trying to rip my throat out that sounds wizardry. Could you take a video and maybe email that over?

Dogs aren't cars I really don't understand the analogy. Living beings with souls are diffrent to a machine. My dog is learning that she behaves and gets treats or she has a time out. That may be the correction that I keep hearing about but it's the same as a child surely. You make them want to behave for you instead of behaving out of fear. That's how humans get mental health issues, intimidation breeds aggression. Not trying to hate, just want to make sure I'm not wrong

    • @gablison

It's just about using the right tool for the right job, whatever that maybe. I've taken care of a lot of dogs, you can't generalise what your dog is like to any other dog. Not all dogs are food or even toy motivated sometimes they need other methods to get their attention, let alone listen to you.
A stubborn 150lb bulldog I took care of refused to walk with a harness, the minute the prong collar went on him, he walked and listened like a charm.
Harness: rigid posture, nose pointed forward like a pointer dog, would not stop pulling for the life of him, could not get away fast enough from me.
Reason: it was pinching his sides, it was all red and there were welts, he thought I was inflicting that pain on him and didn't know he was doing it to himself so he was trying to get away from me. Same thing with a flat collar and the martingale or slip lead, nearly choked himself to death,
The minute i got the prong collar on him, he walked like a charm. He literally didn't feel it until he pulled, then the prongs (which don't hurt him at all by the way) distributed the pressure evenly around the back of his ears, nowhere near his throat or trachea, getting his attention away from his "GO! GO! GO!" mentality, popped him back by my side and looked at me. He tried to pull several more times while I just stood there calmly until he realised that it would shut off when he was by my side and when he stopped pulling. After that, he listened like a champ, tail wagging, happy as a clam, kept looking at me for direction, tried pulling when he saw other dogs or birds flying but then when he got popped he came beside me and i gave him constant positive reinforcement, but when he misbehaved, a small tug would get his attention, then I redirected his behaviour and he listened without a fight. Whereas before it was a constant tug of war. I then spent the 2nd week reintroducing him to his harness before I gave him back to his owner.
I had to teach him that listening to me was worth his while with whatever tool but the prong helped him understand that concept.
There are countless examples of dogs who need the extra help in understanding what we want from them and have them actually want to listen to us.
It's the same with tools. Rusty nails or washers need more help to get out of walls while slick new nails slide in easily, it's the same concept with dogs.
Well balanced puppies and dogs with little to no atypical genetic makeup or turbulent histories are going to be easier to handle than older dogs with bad training, abusive histories or less than ideal genetic makeup. They will just need more TCL and alternative (not aversive) methods to help them adjust and understand how we want them to behave. No one is advocating for fear or intimidation just better communication tools.
