An antidote to modern attention deficit filming styles. I love the long tracking shots lingering on riders, the action. The music and near silence of road noise over the pavé makes me feel in the head of a rider, the isolation of pain and determination. The romance, the brutality of this race is totally unique and one of the epic traditions that make cycle racing so special.
I was just thinking about this race. A friend and i biked from Amsterdam to Roubaix to watch the race. We're both 🇺🇸. 2017 just retired, life changing tour. Bucket list is complete 😊 Boonen's last shot at 5 wins.
Best cycling documentary ever made. Slow burner perhaps for some with low attention span....but well worth a few minutes of anyone’s day. Amazing film work, atmospheric, wonderful race footage. A masterpiece. I was road racing during the early 1970’s. These riders featured legends.
1976 was my first year competing in UCI races. Races like P-R inspired me. I never raced in Europe, but, when some of the racers came to America, I tried as hard as i could to beat them across the line.
Early relaxing morning ride through the outskirts and light fog of Chantilly............. Superior cinematography, script. A times when it was real. Today, SO plastic.
What is special about Francesco Moser's bicycle ? (the first one we can see at the beginning) : the front brake is connected with the right handle. :-)
It’s something i’ve always found interesting. On mopeds and motorcycles the front brake are connectet to the right handle but on bicycles it’s the other way around.
Think I've watched this classic (in more than one sense) movie about ten times through the years passing by. Though I by far prefer Jørgen Leths own speaking in Danish, which brings a lyrical dimension hard to explain, but what makes the movie a pure masterpiece. And Danish title 'En Forårsdag i Helvede' meaning 'A Spring Day in Hell', but pronounced in Danish brings a special contradiction between the words making the titel somewhat magical. That was my first impression of the title as a teen in mid 1980ies. But ofcourse, in English 'A Sunday in Hell' is more catchy in pronouncement when selling the title, but the special interaction in between the words is lost.
I believe Jørgen Leth also did the documentary on Ole Ritter's 1973 attempt on the Hour Record. I like the accent of the narrator and the background music and slow motion shots make for a lasting impression.
@@abdul-kabiralegbe5660 Yes, this is correct! To be more specific it's about Ole Ritter's failed attempt at the velodrome in Mexico City with goal to regain the hour record back from Eddy Merckx. The marching music was on Ole Ritter's order himself. And a wonderful documentary too.
38 minutes. Now that is a pro pulling the wheel out... How often you see current pros standing there helplessly. Let alone the current situation with disc brakes.
There are classic car competitions where people rally old peugeots or fiats... why the hell aren't there classic bike competitions? There should be pros on heavy classic steel bikes hoofing it on the same roads. The Japanese still do it with njs races!

we used to watch this on vhs the night before long practice rides for inspiration, great film!
"For inspiration". 😆. I can see myself doing that too 😆🤦🏻♂️👍🏻
Pure cycling poetry... 👌💯♥️
Great content! It's nice to observe the gear of that time. How they slowed down on the paves. And the crashes... Heads bleeding, no helmets!! 🥺
Uhhhhh - so romantic, thank You so much for sharing!
My pleasure!
Brillant film!!!
Incredible to see these guys cycling full tilt with lungs full of dust and exhaust fumes
surprisingly good camera work!
The most beautiful race on the world Inside the field ..awesome

10:00 R.I.P. Waldemaro Bartolozzi (1927-2020)
legendary thanks a lot 👍
Nothing like having to adjust your bike the day of the race!
Hermoso video saludos desde Barranquilla Colombia Sur América bendiciones para todos.
I wonder what wheels they were riding? Obviously sew-ups but 32 or 36h rims? Straight guage OR double butted spokes? Fiamme or Anbrosio or Mavic rims?
Muito obrigado!
Saudações do BRASIL \o/
My first race bike was a benotto

It was common among italian cyclists
Stor ros til Jørgen Leth👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love how sitting on the roof of the team car is totally okay
Lo que hay en la carrera, que bien esta el documental con las cámaras de la época. Un buen rato
Beauté du cyclisme !
Love the mechanic(s) on the roof of the team cars , holding spare bike etc!!! Health n safety??? Ha Ha Some of the greatest cyclists ever ...
Those leadout with 5 motorbikes setting the pace together at the time

Thanks for posting! It’s been decades since I watched this.
BTW - Where’s Hinaults fists to squelch these protests!
The only thing I mess is Jørgen Leth's wonderful voice :-)
Just like his 1973 documentary on Ole Ritter's Hour Record.

33:27 I'm genuinely curious about the drifting technique they're implying with this sign.
It clearly suggests to do a 360 whenever possible.

UN maniático y obseso con toc Merckx
Guys at the front getting a real good motorpace from those motos!
Aah remember when the gears were on the down tube??🤣🤣
Oh yes, you’d better pick your gear before the climb.
why does someone deslike in a video like this?
By mistake
The first cycling film I ever saw. From that day on I wanted to make one. Instead I made two! Ha!
So did Jørgen Leth. This one and “The stars and the water carriers”.
Lol at the grinding cadence, looks like most are doing 60-70..these days it's more like >90
Also sadly Marc Demeyer died of heart attack ... only 31. . .
Back before doping was doping.
"a rare steak is a good breakfast" hahaha not today mate :)
I was just thinking the same :) A lot have changed in terms of nutrition and training methods.

This is the documentary "Sunday in hell"
shame the mtb had not been developed yet
A Sunday in Hell....
I thought Moser will win on sprint! 😁
All great except the dramatic choral music was a bit much. It sounds like something Nazis might be marching to. Thanks for putting this video up.
The riders looked like real men in those days, not like todays boys in their poncey helmets and toytown bikes..:)
Yeah, but the real men were slow as fuck compared with todays boys.
Helmets are a ruling by the UCI after a few riders died from head trauma.
Stolen content
EPO ruled those days.
EPO was only purified in the lab after this event. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythropoietin?wprov=sfti1
Horrible music...
