I was 9 years old and had never watched cycling in my life. I had to watch this race because I spent the Sunday at my grandparents' house and my grandfather was a fan of cycling. The Museeuw-Tchmil duel made me fall in love with this race and this sport, and I have been ever since.

A great memory, thank you for posting. My wife & I travelled with "Sports Tours" to this race. The weather was foul, we had snow before the first cobbles. It was our first trip across the Channel and, in all, I think we spent about 42 hours in the bus. Oh yes, and the toilet blocked just after the start in Compiegne and we eventually got decanted to another bus. I did, however, win the sweepstake to predict the winner, and I went back with more Francs than we had come with !!!

Quite a cross section of generations here...from Duclos-Lasalle (here in the twilight of his career) who (early in his career) rode with Moser, Raas, Pollentier and other stars of the '70's and early '80's; to Steffan Weseman (here early in his career)who (later on) rode with Boonen, Cancellera and other stars of the 2000's!

I remember his commentary, all down to the winter training apparently for the increase in strength in depth of the peloton. He was a guest at our cycling club dinner in early 2012 and even then he was a bit in denial about Lance. He got grilled about it by some of our members

For those of us who came of age in the '80's and 90's, watching the limited U.S. broadcasts of the few races we could see, this synth-pop was an integral, ever-present part of racing. It never really bothered me...beggars can't be choosers! We were happy just to be able to watch the race!

@@simonworsley8631 - Exaggerations of the old times. Just like when they were saying that mid-80s rallycars had "up to 600hp" (in reality they never reached 500hp) or that the Lancia Delta Integrale of the early 90s made 350hp (300hp)
