Did I used to SUCK at guitar?!?! Well, there's no better place to find out than my first band's first album! So, on today's episode of Riff Retrospective, we're going on a guided tour through "Out of Time" by Human Fuse, the 6 song prog metal wankfest we recorded in 2003!
We're gonna talk about the whole album, plus reminisce with the other dudes from the original lineup about what was going through our teenage brains when we were writing this stuff. It's a stroll down memory lane, for sure!
Playing this amazing Tom Anderson Angel Player 7 I've got on loan through my Diesel VH2, boosted with a Peper's Pedals Dirty Tree! It's a tasty combo!
Wanna hear what happened with Human Fuse after this record? Let me know in the comments! - เพลง

Was a blast listening. My first band was awful but we played every Friday night in the local sports bar. Unfortunately, one of my guitars got stolen after this dude punched my lead guitar in the face.
@@jeffdiltz4356sucks for your lead guitar
Dude, we need a re release of this album..
Uncle Ben,
Did you start playing guitar a year-and-a-half earlier with a good teacher?
You seem to have a deep knowledge (Lydian mode, etc.) for only playing that long.
Ben, so tasty! Impressed. Love it.
So we learned that Ben came out of the womb with a Jackson slung around his shoulder.
Ouchie!
A Dinky?
😂
An Ibanez you mean?
Dang Ben was better at guitar after a year and a half than I’ve become in 30 years. Shame
I feel it
He was homeschooled and practiced 8 hours a day
@@rockout55551 me too. 😂
Dude I was about to comment THE SAME THING!
@@salatielfariasregis9156 I’m still feeling ashamed. I’ve haven’t touched my guitar since this video dropped. Thanks Ben. 😝
After a year and a half of playing? Holy crap! That's pretty awesome man.
thank you!
I don't even know how it's possible! I teach and my prodigy student who's been playing for 3 years would have no chance being able to play this stuff competently, let alone come up with it. Ben is a god amongst uncles.
Finally get to see nephew Ben!
Edit: You were damn good for 1.5 years of playing... I need to practice more.
I love the documentary style of this video. You can really see the nostalgia in everyone’s eyes when speaking.
For a year and a half of playing guitar you did a great job, uncle Ben! 👍
Im not even close to playing like that and ive been playing for 4 years
@@giancarlobarsotti1805 don’t give up. Everyone learns at a different pace! 👍
Oh, talent and skill. Ben sounded 100x better after a year and a half than I sound after 30+
What an amazing trip down memory lane. Some of my greatest musical memories were made here with you and Mitch and Clay. Thanks for putting this together! 🤘
Haha thanks for being a part of it, dude
I think the part that fans like about following an artist is the joy of watching the artist develop new material and grow over time. Does anyone else agree?
I just read that Jeff Hanneman played for about a year before joining Kerry King's band.
This was so cool to hear your 1st band! My 1st and only band back in the late 80's early 90's (7 yrs) together, we were good early on and just kept getting better but never were as good as y'all were. Like Derek said though, man people really loved what we were doing and that was the wind in the sails. Loved it, wouldn't trade it for the world. Great memories, so thank you for sharing yours. God bless.
It is insane you were playing this way after a year and a half. I’ve noticed that with a lot of virtuosos tho, they get really good really fast bc of intuitively doing things correct in terms of technique, developing really strong ears by playing all the time, etc.
Pretty sure there’s a video of Rick Graham shredding better than I ever will despite only playing for like 2 years at the time lmao.
That’s why you guys teach and why we’re the students 🫡
Also the editing and layout of this video kicks ass, loved getting this glimpse into early Ben/human fuse lore
Thanks a ton, dude!
I hear a lot of good elements. You guys should be proud of an amazing first effort ..and without the bells and whistles that a big label would have provided to the effort, sounds really good.
Sometimes I feel like a grandma just smiling and nodding to whatever the hell Ben is talking about with Castlevania Van Halen diminished arpeggios
Same.
You have one hell of a sense of self-deprecating humor but let's be honest, you guys did great! Thanks for sharing these moments with us. Loving your brutal honesty.
We need all the Human Fuse Riff Retrospectives, Unky Ben!
Saw Human Fuse live at "The Downtown" in Morristown when I was in high school. Cool video.
Your smile while talking about these tunes says it all…. And you playing like that after just a year and a half is ridiculous. Some great riffs that absolutely stand up!
Dude, you played like that 18 months in? That homeschool music curriculum must be KILLER!!
Lived in Knoxville 21 years. You did well man. Keep it up.
I am impressed that you still remember the tracks after 20 years. .....and only 18 months of playing blows my mind. Thank you for showing us where you were and how far you have gone in that time.
This looked like a fun video for you to make! It was definitely fun to watch, glad to see you can laugh about it but still be proud of it! Definitely impressive for how new you were
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dude this whole time I never knew you were from Tennessee! How did I miss this? Mornin neighbor. If you're not joking about playing for only 1.5 years on this album that's amazing dude.
thank you!!! Nope, not kidding about the time spent playing!
Really like how this came out Ben. The format, with focused takes and narrative from yourself and the guys works well. I see you got the weird phase thing sorted too, audio is pretty good all around. Nice one! I'm going to head over to Patreon tonight and see what you did on that one.
huzzah!
You were far better at 18 months than I am now at 20
years of playing. You were born to do this!
Far better than my first album! It's clear that you knew then that this is what you wanted to do with this life!! Thanks for sharing this Ben.
This is so cool, kudos for sharing this. If only my band’s first recording sounded this good!
Thanks for sharing this one Ben. Has me remembering my old terrible jamming days. Bad music but great times. And hell yes we want more of this stuff! Would love to get your riff retrospection on your djent before djent era.
Good to hear you're not negative! Life is about progression and for a young strapping lad just starting out in the early 2000s, its pretty good!
I’m just a step dad, but hopefully we can jam one day, my friend… always enjoy your videos. Always inspires me to play.
Can't wait for my sonic blue h-s angel 7. Always fun to revisit music you made or listened to heavily years ago, the ancillary memories it spurs make it a great way to reflect and connect with your past self.
Dude! The hell!? Played for year and a half, daaaamn! 🤘Been playing for almost two decades now and still can't play for shit! Ben is the shrediknight we've all been looking for!
Alot to unpack here Uncle Ben!! I did get the Sum41 right off the bat and I never was huge huge into them. I agree was a really broad move to go all in like you all did for a first album. Really well done!
Nice touch reaching out to former band mates for their take on the album as well. As always, awesome content Unc🤘
You were playing better then, than I am now. And I've been playing for like 30 years. :(
you played for one and a half year and was playing stuff like this? Jesus Ben you are amazingly talented!
haha well, thanks! one critical part you gotta remember is that since i was homeschooled, i spent like a year solid playing like 8 hours a day. That helped!
@@BenEller I could NEVER forget that you were homeschooled!!!!
@@metalheadpunk i mean its pretty hard to ignore hahaha
The prog levels are over 9000😂😂😂 I can only imagine how these tunes were hitting the scene in Knoxville in the early 2000s, definitely a special time. Great video!
hahaha i tell you, some people at O'Charley's really had a memorable meal when i jumped on their table playing in 9/8 at 175 BPM.
NOO😂 you were definitely a topic in a pastors sermon shortly after
Bro it's cool. The whole band 😎
This video came up in my feed and I clicked on it hoping it would be about Human Fuze. I LOVED this album!! I saw you guys play at least 3x in Knoxville back then and wore that album out on my iPod! I haven’t listened to it in years, but I still think about it occasionally. Great to see you’re still active!!
Dude! This was an awesome look into your playing history. I'm floored by how well you played for someone who had just picked up the guitar. What a treat!!!
I never knew you had anykind of melodic death metal influence. Nice to hear that since I love that early swedish melodeath alongside Children of Bodom.
oh yeah man, for sure! Love that stuff.
Thanks Uncle Ben, Great to hear where it started! Really luv that 7 string
🤩👍
I remember seeing you guys live at Ground Zero here in Spartanburg I believe in the mid-2000s. I still would like some of your music if you have any CDs lying around.
That solo on The Color of the Sun is really great. Regardless of total time on the instrument.
I always pictured you picking to the guitar for the first time and being able to play well and awesome metal face in the photo too
Weird that you posted this specific video - today I got in the post an old back issue of Kerrang! magazine from 1998 that I bought online, because it’s the one that had a one paragraph, but fairly favourable, review of my old band’s album in it 😆 Truly the proudest moment of my young life (I remember my little brother ringing me up to tell me, and running round the corner to buy a copy)
You played that well after only practicing for 1.5 years? You're a great inspiration Uncle Ben! 🤘
Oh man! If I hear Ben saying that he'd only been playing for a year and a half one more time I might as well pack it up and convert my Les Paul into a nice coffee table. Shredder indeed! 🎸🤘
Loved this Uncle Ben!
I love this
Riffs that are simple but still fun!
Loving that 1st riff, perfect way to start off a record!
Y’all should remake/remaster this album.
Ben, the fact you could play like that after a year and a half......Goddamn!!
Some people are just naturally gifted at an instrument. You Ben, certainly are and I wish you mega success. You deserve it my friend.
Bro, I didn't start listening to Dream Theater until around 2011. It was one of those "why nobody told me about...?!" things!
This was a great episode! LOL on "dollar store riffs". Great stuff Uncle Ben.
The arpeggio section of the solo for Shadowed totally sounds like John Sykes solo on Cold Sweat.
Sounds sick, I like it!
WAY better than my early stuff. Definitely way better than anything I did a year and a half into playing. But you have come a long way for sure since your days as a young, aspiring uncle.
Very kool Ben thanks for sharing it
the angel 7! I cant wait for mine to arrive
Sorry i was late to the show.....learn something new everyday, thanks for the flash back....I'm actually listening to this today. Human Fuse, you have totally evolved it amazes me you were so young yet had a great sounding band. Thanks again Uncle Ben!🤘🤘🤘
You have helped me personally evolve in my guitar playing so much over the past year. Some day i will shed the step dad speed i hope! Lol!
Thanks a lot man!
Wow! you recorded that after playing for just a year and a half? What?!!!
Now I feel like crap! thanks a lot!
You had only been playing for a year and a half? WTF? This is a million times better than me after 15+ years. I may as well just sell all of my equipment now and hide my face in shame.
Nawwww! It ain’t a contest! I’m glad it’s not, either, cause dudes like BAXTY exist. Whew.
Some just reach their potential quick and then stagnate for years and others slowly develop over years.
Pretty sick combination of influences, and like nearly everyone else is saying, this at a year and a half is pretty gd crazy
Damn Ben, you had some serious skills on guitar for only playing a year and a half. It's hard to believe, especially from my perspective. I had only made like 2 riffs/songs the first year or so I played and annoyed the shit out of my parents lol.
Honestly it sounds great, and I like how you guys paid attention to add a sort of keyboard flavor ala Dream Theater with the 2nd guitar without actually having any keys on the album, similar to Queensryche. Been trying to write like this myself for the longest time
Man! That's going back in the day! I remember when you guys played at the downtown for the battle of the bands! An you guys blew that place up!! You guys didn't even make the top 5!! Which pissed off myself and a lot of others cause you all should have won!! Those bands dont even play anymore, and look what you guys did and how you all progressed and look at you all now!! Sick burn to everyone who said yal wouldn't go anywhere. I remember when you guys made that album, and you gave me a copy.. shadowed is still my favorite song and solo! You guys were always harder on yourselves than you should have been.. you guys are still amazing! You're still my guitar hero, brother!! 👍👍❤️❤️❤️
The fact that you are a fellow Tennessean just makes you that much cooler to me.
Cancun is actually a pretty sick track! And for a year and a half, this is honestly pretty mind blowing! I can say that because I’m a year and a half in, and my guitar playing sucks! 😂
I think it was only a few years ago that I finally had to get rid of my Human Fuse shirt that I got when I was taking lessons from you. She held on as long as she could!
Cool stuff Unk-A-Ben, ..
An awesome and fun episode as always Thanks for that. you are appreciated.
I think these songs are better than you feel they are now?
Some of it; puts me in mind of "Between the Buried and Me".. Probably my favorite "Prog Band"
Definitely cool watching these, man, I also know what it’s like to go back and listen to my old music (and occasionally cringing at some of my tones sounded as well as finding things that I could’ve improved upon and what I liked) but these sound really good and I wish I could write riffs like that on my guitar. Regardless this was definitely impressive, loved listening to this
uncle ben after 18 months playing better than me after 18 years.
REAL
Man, I forgot about Human Fuse! Also, that guitar is amazing.
Damn dude you crack me up, I love this idea. You’re playing at 1.5 years of experience is still probably better than me at 25 years which is kinda depressing for me, but really more of an indication of your incredible talent. Super glad I discovered your channel and have already noticed improvements in my playing from applying your advice!
So....when's the reunion show ?
I will totally listen to this album unironically 🤘🏼
Dude, that home schooling pays off. You were already pretty good for only year of playing. When I started all I wanted was to be able to play VH 78 in it's entirety. That took me like 3 years just to be able to play it close enough to count as a cover. My picking was nowhere these types of leads at that time. (Thank god for Troy grady)
Sounds great!
That's absolutely mind-shattering to play like that after only a year and a half. Some people are truly talented from the get-go. I'm still at war with my pinky, and it's been 15+ years.
Man I’m very lucky to have been homeschooled so that I could practice like 8 hours a day for over a year!
@@BenEller damn. I wish I had this kind of dedication towards anything back when I was a strapping young lad. But, as one of the comments here stated: "That's why you're a teacher and we're your students".
I'm not really into super heavy metal or progressive metal, so honestly, Cancun is right up my alley. Sounds more 80s metal than 2000s, so yeah, definitely like it more than the others. At least so far.
No surprise you're that good today if this is what you could do after 18 months of playing... certainly nothing to be ashamed of!
Please do an episode covering Human Fuse when ole Andrew Bledsoe was the front man. Loved seeing yall live back in the day.
Damn i have to check out this record! It sounds really nice! Good job young uncle Ben😂
loved the smile of reminiscence.. "good god the good ol days.."
This is still insane to me, to be 1,5 years in to playing!
Damn dude, only 1.5 years of playing and you played like this? You did such a great job!
Shout out to the AX-212!!! I still have mine, complete with the floorboard that always shorts out and starts doing random things.
I had a four track Cassette recorder! Later I upgraded to a Boss digital 8 track - using Zip disks!
I mean for only being a year and a half into playing... this is Shredding.. I was like playing Judas priest Breaking the Law and Sepultura Troops of Doom a year in and thought I was progressing fast haha! I had not got to dream theater until later, I was very much a thrash kid when I started playing. Thanks Uncle Ben!
Pretty cool!
Ummm, yeah. I’m glad I’m not the only one in awe with 1.5 years of playing. Really started to question my 2 year progress till I read the comments.
Taking us back to the past😅. Man, you just reminded me of all the solos I recorded over backing tracks. Trying so many things but just having fun. It's nice to look back to see where you came from.
"Same guy, wankin on both sides of the spectrum"....dude, fuckin gold. 😃 Nothing like goin back to your primitive beginnings. mine are late 80s early 90s 808 drum machine industrial deathgrind velveeta. Ive seen our first demo for $75-80 ...lol. I couldn't GIVE them away in the day. Good shit my man. 👍
I’ve been playing for a year and a month, if I could play like that I wouldn’t be bitching.
That section of "Cancun" at about 15.30 (just after the Santana comment) is the second half of the verse (or maybe pre-chorus) of the theme from Wonder Woman 1970s TV show. And now I've got it stuck in my head.
Thank you ben and your welcome
Uncle Ben - You had me at "seven string w@nkery", so I just had to watch it! 😁
You guys were really good! That is a great first album for some teenagers just playing for a few years
