Groucho Marx stated for the record that Judy not winning the Oscar for this movie was the biggest robbery ever committed by the Academy. Lucille Ball, Lauren Bacall, Dorothy Malone and countless other stars (over 100 stars attended the premiere there in Hollywood in 1954) stated Judy was a "shoo-in" for winning the Oscar and all of Hollywood expected her to win. My mother, an actress, was at the premiere. Everyone was in total shock when she didn't win (Grace Kelly did). The real reason why she didn't win had nothing to do with her personal problems, as has been thought for so long. However, on the inside of Hollywood, it was well known as to why she didn't win. The movie, made by Warner Brothers, was originally a little over 3 hours. Directors have said that the first 3-hours of the movie was as powerful as was Gone With The Wind. But, the studio and theatre owners wanted it shorter and so they cut and cut and cut. Today, what you see, has lost much of its oomph and power compared to the original. Nevertheless, what caused Judy not to win was there was internal conflict going on between Warner Brothers and The Academy (Oscars). Politics. It was awful. Not long afterwards, Judy packed up and left the States for London. In my opinion, she was the greatest all-around entertainer in Hollywood history. We all know how Hollywood "murdered" her through pushing amphetamines and other drugs down her throat to keep her slim, etc. She never recovered from that. Throw in her tragic childhood and, well...we lost a gem the likes we'll never see again. So sad.
The sad truth is, especially here in America, our history is a preponderously long list of ravaging the beautiful and precious gifts God has given us; instead of valuing, protecting and respecting them. Materialistic lust and greed destroys. May Judy's life be a sober lesson for all future generations. She was SO PRECIOUS 💞.
Groucho said this about everybody who didn’t win. Grace Kelly received the most votes from the academy members for Best Actress. It’s a union vote for union members. Judy’s fellow actors thought Grace deserved it more than Judy did for her remake of the 1937 classic. That’s that.
@@MrRufusRToyota Your statements about Groucho are just plain false. I grew up in Hollywood in the 1950s and my mother was a stand-in for Maureen O'Hara. It was not only reported in the press what Groucho said, but many in the Academy mirrored his feelings about the results. My family were friends with many in the industry. Warner Bros Studio was in a major conflict with the Academy at the time. Politics killed Judy's chances of winning it. SHE WAS ROBBED of the win due to the political infighting going on. Union members voted for Grace to save face with the Academy! Any person with a cognitive brain could easily ascertain that Judy's performance was nothing short of spectacular and over the top -- the very best! No way could Grace compete with Judy, especially when you consider that Grace could neither sing nor dance and her acting, to be truthful, was only average to above average. And THAT'S THAT!!
Groucho Marx said it best, “The greatest robbery since Brinks. There is no way Judy should have lost the Best Actress award. It was my wake-up that Hollywood isn’t all it seems. Grace Kelly? Really? Shameful, absolutely shameful.
Thank You very much for presenting this story. I watched "A star was born" which was filmed in the 21st century. Very lyrical psychological drama...
I do appreciate Your attention very much, Dear AFI😎
Highly extremely honored! Amazing sensations of being treasured, appreciated and loved. Thank You so much, Dearly Honorable AFI 🖼🌻🧘♂️

The performer..that did this final scene with Judy's"Vickie Lester"was Tommy Noonan as"Danny".

Shameful, absolutely shameful.
This notorious Oscar robbery and the cancellation of her TV series were two final blows to her career.
I think they were blows to her as a person.😢😢
