ULTIMATE DETAILED FJALLRAVEN ANORAK NO. 8 REVIEW !!!

  • Ultimate detailed review of the Fjällräven Anorak No. 8 - the Anorak No. 8 is part of the legendary numbers series by Fjallraven. This technical trekking anorak is a brilliant piece of outdoor clothing and can be adapted to suit a variety of weather conditions by using Greenland Wax.
    This particular garment is in size medium and is 'Tarmac' colour.
    If you have any additional comments or questions about this anorak, please let me know in the comments below and thank you for watching.
    Anorak No. 8 was created to withstand tough conditions in the forest and mountains throughout the year. The hood can be adjusted for a perfect fit around the head, and a visor construction means that you can fold the visor back from two angles, depending on whether you want maximum wind protection or more peripheral visibility. When not being worn, the hood forms a high collar that keeps your neck warm. In warmer weather, the zipper can be unzipped and the opening unbuttoned and folded to the side to release excess heat. There are also long zippers in the sides of this anorak that can be opened for ventilation and make it easier to put on/take off. The large kangaroo pouch in the front can be accessed both from the top and the sides. A drawcord in the back regulates the waist and another drawcord in the front adjusts the hem. Buttoned sleeve cuffs.
    The anorak is made from wind and water resistant G-1000 Eco in recycled polyester and organic cotton with extra strong G-1000 HeavyDuty at the shoulders, sleeves and the extended back. The fabric and details were chosen to minimise their impact on the environment - for example most of the leather details are made from leftover pieces of leather - and to make it easy to replace exposed sections after years of use.

    Nice to see a comprehensive review. I've had mine for several years and the only review I saw back then wasn't in English. I definitely agree the sizing is big, but for it's true use, it fits true to size. It's meant to be part tent rather than a fashion item. I have two, a medium for shoulder seasons, and a large for deep winter here in Canada. With the layers, you do want room for air to circulate between the different layers and if the jacket fits snug over the layers, then this ends up losing some of it's intended effect. For a traditional anorak, the sleeves should be long enough to completely cover your hands (in case you lose your mitts) and the body should be big enough that you can pull your arms in and change layers if needed. Definitely not fashionable when that big, but pure function. My only complaint about this jacket is it's length. I wish it was about 20cm longer. That would extend it's warmth significantly.
    On a side note, a little trick I use when carrying a back pack with this jacket is I run the pack's waist belt either through the front pocket (you lose the function of the pocket but the kangaroo still works) in really cold weather, or if warmer, I unzip the sides from the top and run the belt through the inside of the jacket (and you get access to both front pockets).

    I think I'm doing the MCM box set this weekend - This is a superb piece of kit - I worked in Scandinavia for many years and experienced the rigours of their climate. The strange thing is I never felt the cold there like I do in the UK.
    The air is completely dry - cold yes , but not the same bone clinging , damp cold we get here.
    So this jacket is ideal for that climate - doesn't need to be waterproof as the rain there is usually solid in wintertime , and will be worn doing jobs outside , cutting firewood etc. - so needs to be durable and breathable.
    It's a cracking garment - like a Swedish Barbour , with added help for us baldies.

    Fjallraven sizing is generally pretty inconsistent although the sizing of this jacket is worth special mention. I’m a large in most Fjallraven stuff. For reference I have a large in Keb touring soft shell and high coast wind anorak along with a number of their shirts although I’m a small in the no.8 and it’s by no means tight fitting. There’s plenty of room for layering.
    I initially bought a medium after advice to size down but eventually got fed up with the fit and bought a small. I would thoroughly recommend, as advised, to try this on before buying as it’s huge compared to other Fjallraven sizes you’re probably familiar with.
    I echo the comments about the wrists. They are way too wide and to be honest are a genuine annoyance with this jacket. A slightly smaller hood would have also been appreciated. It can be annoying at times.
    Good review for people looking at buying this jacket.

      Hi, yes the sizes in this are huge. Shame about the cuff issue - I know people who are adept at sewing etc would be tempted to add another press stud - I'll just live with it as it is. Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment - Chris

    I'm 193cm and 92kg with a 111cm chest. I generally wear L jackets but sometimes XL. What do you reckon for me: M or L? I don't like my jackets too baggy either - just want enough for some layers underneath. Great vid, thanks!

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd normally be a large - it was huge. I have a medium and still room for plenty of layers. Unfortunately, the zip has failed on the pocket of mine - they're not YKK - weak point to be aware of in a garment costing so much.

    Great looking kit, but the hood ruined it for me. How do you keep it dry when it doesn't fit under a waterproof shell?

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching - it's not meant to go under any shell. It's an outer layer. The jacket isn't designed to be waterproof - but it can be made water resistant to a lesser or greater degree using Greenland Wax. It dries quickly, keeps out the elements and is a very rugged piece it kit. ATB, Chris

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ps, the hood is what makes it for me - it's like a shelter in itself - a very warm and cosy place when the wind is picking up.

    • @Cookie-yl8uq
      @Cookie-yl8uq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MCMOutdoors Really appreciate the detailed review you've done here, Chris! And it is a great smok! Its a serious protective outer layer, certainly, but no amount of waxing will keep you dry in extended poor weather so for me I'd need it to fit under an outer shell. Maybe it would with the hood down + collar up? Might also work well with a poncho, Snugpak enhanced ponchos are great. I'm thinking about one of these or the Helikon. Stay safe and keep adventuring!

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it will never keep you totally dry in extended wet weather - although in Catbells in some bad winter weather, with sleet and snow - it managed really well. The sizes are huge, so may struggle fitting under any layers - it's not a close fit at all. I know paramo make some nice smocks too. Thanks for watching and good look on the search for the new garment. ATB

      Hi, they're not designed as a waterproof garment so not sure how they can "leak"? The garment will eventually wet through in prolonged rain, but it doesn't purport to be anything different. ATB, Chris
