      Yep. That's me.
DECK 16 was made in an afternoon in preparation for ECTS. I was a former QuakeWorld player and loved DM 6 and DM 1. Many of the ramp shortcuts were inspired by DM 6/DM1 but I wanted the map to have more diversity, longer line of sight, and sense of volume/scale most DM maps could not handle due with how maps vis back in those days. (We did not have to deal with that like Quake 1 and 2 did. Hate that tech.) I included areas tailored to particular player types (Flak cannon vs 9 Ball) Sniper spots, tight spaces, and larger areas were the minigun could function successfully.
It's funny, google Deck 16 and it is probably one of the most popular maps in gaming history along with Inoxx's Facing World CTF map. Fun times, Some awesome level designers on the original Unreal team.
I miss those days when game development was actually fun like a small business. I still love making game, but love writing too. Check out my book. www.telliotcannon.com/

Wow! So great to have an insight from the creator!
15 years ago I used to live at UT99's Deck16 and it was amazing experience. Imo, one big reason for the map popularity was its default status for the most newcomers. Simple and effective geometry was fast to learn but adapted easily to any style: run'n'gun, tactical or even campering. Also for some reason bots ignored big armour on the bottom level so we had a nice handicap during practice;) And then when you and your friends were ready for the battles against each other... well, the first choice was obvious:)
Thank you for those unforgettable memories, mr. Sleddog! And yes, we yearn for that old times too. Modern division into AAA and indie games is a dead end.

Deck17 represented the pinnacle of gaming. Since then, the quality of games may have improved, but the hype has definitely died down quite a bit. Gaming has never been the same since the downfall of UT2004. Kids today have no idea what it was like to participate in LAN parties, running match after match all night long, binging on chips and drinking coca-cola amids your brutally mundane under-age circumstances. And yet, I think back on those LAN parties and those were literallty the best nights of my life.

Something I always found fascinating about UT99...
Because of weapons being picked up, gameplay is very frantic as you're hunting for a gun, whilst trying to avoid being hunted yourself
Also, shuffle the locations of the guns or add guns a map does not normally have, and BOOM you have brand new experience

Deck 16][ is my favorite. Iconic and very functional. It went downhill from there in the aesthetics department. Deck 17 was a turn in the wrong direction for one reason, and that's the magma. Replacing the cooler ambient glow with this orange hellish glow just kills the atmosphere of the map to me. It makes me feel like I'm playing Quake 3 with all that orange light! UT3 was cool, but the run-down factory look didn't quite catch me. I'll always prefer a well-lit, functional facility for my arena. It's what Deck is to me. I'd play Rankin or some other map if I wanted run down facilities or different lighting. RIP UT4

2:48 Deck 17. You are wrong here, to state that "Epic" said its a Magma Refinery. Deck 17 is a remake of someone ELSE then Epic, he made it for UT2k3... Epic bought the right to use it for 2k4... in fact he made a new version for UT2k4. FunUnrealTournament, Teddie Tapawan made it, if memory serves.
3:10 There was in fact an CTF version of the map... where one Team was in the Magma Refinery... and the other ran through that tunnel (and some other connections) to the Bio Research Facility.
    Respect where Respect is due!

    So, to summarize it:
    U1: Original Version
    UT1: Updated Version
    - Changed the death pit with a TP for the Redeemer
    - Mega Health was changed to U-Damage
    - Minigun was replaced with Pulse Gun
    UT2004: Basic Changes were made
    - 50 was changed from the original to the hightop boxes in the backyard.
    - Another 50 was added behind boxes on the 5th floor.
    - Replacing Toxin Suit with the Sniper Rifle
    - Jump Boots are gone and instead makes way to some Jump Pads (which is accessible, IMO)
    - Acid changed to Magma (Lava)
    - Route for the Flak Corridor to ASMD/U-Damage Area
    UT3: Better Changes were made
    - Better Design
    - Bio Goo everywhere
    - Everything comes to normal.
    UT4: FPS Savings
(Don't cancel me pls, It's just a summary)

WOW. I would'nt beleive If somebody told me one day I can have a conversation with the creator of this super legendary map. This is one of my favourite maps along with Hyperblast and ah I forgot the name but it's very small 1v1 map you play singleplayer of UT99 with 1v1 with yellow dressed woman. ( I would edit my comment finding that map's name, but it was blue themed map.)
What made this map really good I think is that It's simplistic as a whole and the main area, but backyard section with elevators can be a bit tricky and quite complex especially in PRO matches, they use them really fast and to their advantage, basic natural but genious design. 2 elevator design is really, really good. In my opinion the lower section could be harmless water with some rewards, but there could be some switch to electrocude or players who enter the water will be a bit vulnurable. I love high risk /reward instead of instant punishment, but that's me :D I think the original and UT version is doing something really good which is accumulating the players on the big middle section of the map. And for the newer version I think there should be more equipment and reward on these areas because most players of today is trying to get high k/d instead of fun and peaking the middle section from "corners" of the map and see If there is easy kill without throwing themselves into open.
I must say that I think UT 99 version is the best in my opinion. Because the map's lightening and theme goes really really good with the map and the game. The bright top top lights on the open section of the map really makes the map like fighting arena and the passage and side triangular entry looks really modern and futuristic but also staying really simple. The middle section is quite open and there isn't a lot of thing to consider while strafing, which I like. Middle section could be more open removing the boxes and such, but this would make the map worse for high player count. Also newer version of this map in my opinion should have stayed away from very detailed textures and details, like in the original and UT99 version. This will suit way better to the fast paced only players should be seen and less eye fatuguing. Backwalls should be like very flat to emphsasize the players instead of covered with some plants or dirt. Also when I still felt that this map is like works or kind of actualy do exist in real life, I don't know why. Aha my best explanation is that this map feels "natural." Which is why I feel it's special and mean a lot. This map mean a lot to me I was playing UT99 singleplayer and with bots while I was 10 years old :D Facing world I think the highligt of all UT's but I am surprised because although is really good but IT's too basic and I feel like If I was a designer that could be the first thing I do in Capture the Flag Mode :D
... There is so much more could be said about this diverse, colourful, fun but still being simplistic map :D And I must congratulate thank you for this map sincerely. Map is really basic but gameplay and 1v1 works really TOP. I really like to talk with the creator and artist of the things and have a deep converstion about their work :D

Just out of curiousity why is Dm-Deck16 so great ? There were much better Dm maps than this one imho . Just try Dm-Xenome ( or Dm-Xnome both are same maps ) for example . Of course it's not an official map from the original UT99 game but a download content .
I have around 500 Dm maps and around 300 Ctf maps .
There are tens of different Dm-Deck 16 maps that has been made . Similar goes for the Ctf-Faces map there are multiple different version that has been made too i.e. CTF-Diamondsword , CTF-Diamondsword LE .
For me UT99 will always be the best since it had everything good and correct . UT 2003&2004 is meh...bleh as i don't like the bot design at all . I much more love those from UT99 they look natural and more human than those brutes kinda looked like war marines from Warhammer . Kinda also why i don't like Quake 3 Arena the bots were ugly . As for the A.I. The bots in UT99 were excellent surely when you put every bot on über difficulty + put the god mode you don't stay a chance to survive , you die in a split second . Ah damn Loque and Tamerlane ;-)

  • @digimaks
    @digimaks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

UT2004 totally blew it... Replaced green acid with MAGMA.. WHY!? that like lose whole purpose of the original level. Plus the whole UT2004 style of making music so dramatic with fake orchestra just nailed the final nail in UT's atmosphere's coffin. Also when U found out the razorjack gun was removed from UT2004, that got me real upset. And made rocket launcher shoot whimpy 3 rockets, instead of motherload of 8 like in UT99! Bad decisions, EPIC.
Did not play UT3, but by video I can tell the creators finally got some shit together and brought back most of the original layout without stupid stuff. Only good addition was the extra corridor at the corner.
    Still miss the reazprjack gun!!!!!!!!

In terms of aesthethic I also prefer the green acid, but in level design the UT2k4 version improved certain things the original one. I personally still think that the UT3 version was the best iteration of the map
I disagree with the soundtrack, I loved the UT99 soundtrack too, But UT2K4 Soundtrack did a great job mixing orchestra with electronic imo, wich also fitted well with its atmosphere, especially the orchestra ones, wich fitted extremely well with the assault maps
