Quake III Arena didn't have shit on UT... I remember playing both, Quake III Arena was way more clunky, the movement and the shooting. Everything was inferior compared to UT. But perhaps still the best competition for UT at the time.

One of the greatest games of all time. This game afforded my first opportunity into multiplayer game play. The maps were literally "unreal". Played so many custom maps of like backyards and pool halls being so tiny in a giant world. I remember sniping was a complete blast. This is my favorite game of all time.
All the years I been dedicated to this series, one thing that made me feel like a big nerd is no one I know at university knows what Unreal Tournament or what Unreal is. They have heard of the Unreal Engines but not the games and I have always found that very strange.
Caius Nair Agreed though admittingly I am a little concerned about the new Unreal Tournament game, it just doesn't feel authentic as the older ones with the Mod community also helping development. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice idea though I just feel like it's going to make UT4 feel like a indie game or mod instead of an official Unreal Title.
Someone in college managed to upload UT99 to public shared folder on the internal network and we would all play it over LAN in windowed mode xD this was 2007 whoever uploaded it was a legend!
It was just so much content in one game. One night you could be playing regular ctf, the next night instagib, then lowg turbo instagib where teammates would boost each other across the map by shooting them. There was so much dynamic and everything felt so refreshing. Epic will probably eventually deliver a ut4. I just doubt it will ever be as good as 99. Back when people were at their best with FPS. You don't see too many jump and snipe games anymore or games with loads of rail guns. The plasma gun was the most advanced player gun in the game. Even more so than the sniper. It's most powerful effect was a combination of primary fire colliding with the secondary fire, but because the action of the two were slow, other players could get off about 2-5 shots off in the time you were trying to combine the two effects, so this made you have to be clever; fire the secondary plasma ball, jump off of a wall to avoid incoming fire and/ or dodge left/ right/ backward/ forward by double tapping the arrow keys(because UT arrived just before the days of WASD) and then shoot your primary in the direction of the ball, regardless of where you happened to be at the time e.g. in the middle of the air or on the ground...hopefully, you were precise and caused that very satisfactory, thunderous explosion....resulting in your opponents death...that is, unless the guy was overcharged with, like,130% health and 150% armor, in which case, he was just badly injured and thrown from the blast...but you could just take him down with a single primary afterward lol. Of course, there were drawbacks...you could end up screwed quite a lot, if you weren't VERY good at it. You could have miss-timed your secondary and now the player is way ahead of where you projected him to be by that time you were ready to fire, making detonation a moot point. Sometimes, though, if you were lucky and greedy you could just let the ball go past him, try to dodge whatever he has in store for you and hold out long enough to get someone with it behind him, just before dying lol.
That wasn't the plasma gun, that was the Shock Rifle. Plasma was called Pulse Gun in UT99 I believe and became Link Gun in 2k4; primary fire was like Q3A's plasma fire and alt fire was more like the LG, but rather than knockback it had a lockdown effect (and wasn't as powerful as its Quake equivalent so only worked as a finisher or in certain contexts). Shock is fun, but in 2k4 the primary was too powerful as it had infinite range, a fast firing rate, knockback making subsequent hits easier, and the game was quite floaty/long-distance anyway. In UT99 I think it was more balanced as you really wanted to pull off combos to get the most damage. Not to mention they were harder to hit, so you needed some precision to keep dodging or use jump boots and hit combos from awkward angles whereas in 2k4 only players with bad aim and movement routinely attempt "standcombos" (and usually get a face full of flak or a headshot for their trouble). I agree with you though, DM FPS is where it's at. I just think it's a shame it's such an insular community nowadays, because it's the same people that have been playing for years and years that keep playing, if they haven't moved on with their lives already. New players might play while it's the flavour of the month, but they rarely stick around (and considering the elitism in whatever remains of the competitive community I'm not surprised nor can I really blame them).
Thanks for sharing, I never saw this! I was such an Unreal fanatic growing up. When I was 16 I was doing everything I could to get a job with them, Mark Rein probably blocked my email from the amount of talking back and forth. I've always loved Epic's outlook on the community, and to this day still shoot CliffyB an email when I'm plastered at the bar saying, "the good old days man!" And he usually responds with something awesome. The whole Unreal universe - mods, games, developers, competitions, UnrealEd, etc.. - is simply unmatched and I doubt there will ever be anything like it again. Super lucky to have grown up with it all as it happened!
The only heart-breaking thing to find out was that they were somehow in WATERLOO which is an hour from me, making Unreal!? I was on the megaforums and unreal.com every single day checking for the "when it's done" to change to, "releasing xxxx" =D Glad I didn't know at the time, I'm sure I would have been arrested for tresspassing or something heh!
"Make the kind of game that YOU want to play" Honestly this is something that's so simple but i feel like it's exactly what's missing in a lot of modern games. Maybe my view is obscured by my rose tinted glasses but i feel like when you play older games like UT, you can really feel the love put into them. It's all there in the little tiny details, everything from the way that bots will taunt you after they kill you to the level of effort and attention to detail that went into the level design. It feels like these games were made by someone who actually played and enjoyed the game themselves and had a personal interest in making sure it was fun and interesting to play. I don't get that feeling from very many modern games. By comparison, they feel kinda cold and impersonal. Like the people who designed them came up with some fun and interesting ideas that looked good on paper, but who didn't really play the games themselves and didn't really have much interest in the games personally outside of whether or not they were successful. Maybe that's unfair to modern game designers but that's genuinely how i feel when i play most modern games. It actually makes me kinda sad because i know that games as an entertainment platform is nowhere close to living up to it's full potential. I know there is so much more to find and discover, but i feel like the industry as a whole has been kinda stuck the last couple of years. It's been putting too much effort into finding new ways of making people pay more for their games instead of making good games that people actually WANT to pay for. I really think we need to shift focus away from the money aspect of games and more towards making actual good and fun games again.
I love both unreal and ut99 so much, my childhood was all about games like silent hill 1, return to castle wolfenstein, medal of honor allied assault and unreal... I miss those days but then again I still have unreal installed and I never feel bored whenever I play it.
Such a great franchise, I loved UT99 (especially CTF-face) but spent many many years playing 24K, the vehicles really made it for me. At the moment I'm playing heroes and generals but really looking forward to UT4. I hope they bring vehicles into it.
I still remember when i bought the UT GOTY Edition with a black CD print. Best Game ever! Back in the 3DFX times with Voodoo 2 and Voodoo Banshee Cards!
Truely thank you for posting this video here on youtube! For a while (after UT 1999) there has been released new versions of Unreal Tournament, they are fun shooters but they do not live near up to as Unreal Tournament 1999, if they truely want to get to that old high quality godfather shooter again they have to go back to the basics. First of all rename it to Unreal Tournament 2, that is the proper name since want the name Unreal Tournament in it and part 2 has never released (name wise of course). Start to build from the old editions, keep all classics maps in it and make a sort of HD version off it, refresh the editor to make maps and such and keep things with the basic. Also add more content to it and new things that people jump to see and also some new music instead of remixes (good ones).
President of Epic: "I can't see us not making UT games". *video ends in Gears of War Epic logo* That's where it all began. I don't have faith in Epic but i have faith in Cliff making his own fastpaced Arena Shooter. Afterall, he was Lead Designer in UT series, so he knows his stuff.
Now that Epic's lost the rights to that bullshit Gears franchise, does this mean they'll finally get to work on a new UT game? After Fortnite, at least?
I hope they will, but they completely lost interest, I don't even call them "Epic Games", not anymore, because they completely forgot what made them great, and what made the history of videogames... Maybe this could have been avoided, if only UT staff released more updates, and more frequently; this lack of content made players lose interest in UT4 (And Fortnite gave the "Fatal Hit"), the fault is entirely of the agency that some years ago was Epic Games, they lost my respect!
I want to see an Unreal Championship 3! I really dont know why developers havent tried to make a game like UNC2 where melee and movement fought guns! I think this is one of the best ideas ever for a shooter game!
Impressive. The most impressive game ever to me. Nice to see them all in this interview. They were so ahead of their time. What a game. I was doing movies as AzZurreS back then.
10:15 That was what made me love Epic Games Now the love they had for UT just vanished! I hope Epic is going to continue developing Unreal Tournament in the future!
My favorite game mode ever was Assault in 2004. So much fun to play. It's the only game where attack and defense feel totally different. And you're battling your own time so it feels worth it. I loved playing the mothership level where you start out in a spaceship. So cool.
"It's our heritage, it's in our DNA, it's what we do... Unreal Tournament, it's in our blood... I can't see us not making Unreal Tournament games" FUCK FORTNITE :(
If anyone wants to know Unreal Tournament 4 is available and free to play. Still a pre-alpha build - meaning it is in the beginning stages of development. Although not a finished game it already has incredible gameplay.
Was talking about how bad i miss this game to a friend(I played UT2K, 2K4 and UT3) and now..seeing this just brings tears to my eyes. I've REALLY missed this game and i do hope it stays true to the previous ones in terms of movement et al
I remember playing this game when I was about 6/7ish, it was the game to play at the time! Millions of players online, there will never be an FPS like it and I'm going to download this ASAP!
UT99 is a game with heart and that is why it is still played. After that it became too commercial, productive and graphic card sales focused. Unfortunatly I dont think it will change with the next UT.
Not many games that are pushing 15+ years still have out of the box online multiplayer support, but UT99 does, which says a lot. Compare UT99 with Quake 3 Arena in terms of gameplay depth (they were released about the same time) and you can easily tell how much better UT fares in comparison
You can't compare Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. They're both the best Arena Shooters ever. Both also 15+ years old and still have servers up and running. Right out of the box working online multiplayer. Though, would like to see a free to play Quake Live of Unreal Tournament. So that Unreal would get more some new players due to the matchmaking arranging players skill-level matches.
Yeah, come on! We're long overdue! We need something that brings UT back to it's roots, in terms of plot AND gameplay (hell maybe even art design too lol) But most of all, we need something that brings the COMMUNITY back. THAT'S where it all started.
@@shyguy778 I played the hell out of UT and Tribes. So much fun, but damn, downloading all those custom textures, sounds was so slow. That's my only gripe with online play. CS: Source suffers the same issue, but that's what you get with a crap load of custom content.
Facing Worlds was created by a "crazy Frenchman". Well, I have that guy to blame for literally playing FW for thousands of hours alone, let alone CTF. Great times!
***** Perhaps... but if it wasn't for him, there would be no unreal tournament, gears of war, and not even friggin Jazz Jackrabbit! The latter may even be his biggest gift to the world

UT was the best memory of the childhood. Doom -94 was magic, but UT was like a dream came true. The game is forever legendary.
So much nostalgia with these games! Especially UT 2004!
Thanks for the upload!
All the years I been dedicated to this series, one thing that made me feel like a big nerd is no one I know at university knows what Unreal Tournament or what Unreal is. They have heard of the Unreal Engines but not the games and I have always found that very strange.
So fucking true.
I honestly blame Epic for avoiding the franchise for years. I'm happy thinks have turned around now though with ut4
Caius Nair Agreed though admittingly I am a little concerned about the new Unreal Tournament game, it just doesn't feel authentic as the older ones with the Mod community also helping development.
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice idea though I just feel like it's going to make UT4 feel like a indie game or mod instead of an official Unreal Title.
no better way or time to introduce them
Someone in college managed to upload UT99 to public shared folder on the internal network and we would all play it over LAN in windowed mode xD this was 2007 whoever uploaded it was a legend!
FULL FAN OF YOUR GAMES, GOD BLESS U ALL!
My childhood. I still play the originals to this day!
"Make the kind of game that YOU want to play"
Honestly this is something that's so simple but i feel like it's exactly what's missing in a lot of modern games.
UT99: the best death sounds of any game, period.
UT 99 and Quake 3. Those were the days. We need a new super fast DM/CTF game from these guys.
Not from these guys. It must be new fresh ideas. These are old, washed out and bound up in contracts with graphic card manufactures.
This was the golden age of gaming, when products were such high quality you could literally play them for 20 years without getting bored.
A game that unfortunate died and became adandomware. Way to treasure your history... Epic games...
AH ut99 and Chaos UT those are so good. good ambiance and music. How I miss the story telling and the unique blend of music and graphics.
10:15 Depression reminder of Unreal 6 aka Unreal Tournament The Year of 2014 is abandoned. 😭💔 *Can I get a hug at least to move on?*
UT2003 is the most underrated game in the world.
Best game ut 99. So much memories. Still love it. Ut 99 is irreplaceable.
*video ends in Gears of War Epic logo*
That's where it all began. I don't have faith in Epic but i have faith in Cliff making his own fastpaced Arena Shooter. Afterall, he was Lead Designer in UT series, so he knows his stuff.
Cedric 'Inoxx' Fiorentino, the creator of CTF-Face? A legend!
Also made some unreal1 maps like the Terraniux and Mothership Basement!
back when they made real games and not fucking fortnite. rip Unreal Tournament 2017.
"You can have it right or you can have it right now"
I really loved that quote
Now that Epic's lost the rights to that bullshit Gears franchise, does this mean they'll finally get to work on a new UT game? After Fortnite, at least?
3 years later...
It's the same. Pre alpha.
What happens to good franchises of the past ;-;
Praveen Sharma dont lose hope!
If anything, Epic and DE would come back together to make a new UT, that would be cool
The pressure cooker, what an amazing idea!!!!!!
Impressive. The most impressive game ever to me. Nice to see them all in this interview. They were so ahead of their time. What a game. I was doing movies as AzZurreS back then.
10:15
That was what made me love Epic Games
Now the love they had for UT just vanished!
I hope Epic is going to continue developing Unreal Tournament in the future!
The original Unreal was a gamechanger. It is absolutely unforgettable!
Back when Epic made good games
My favorite game mode ever was Assault in 2004. So much fun to play. It's the only game where attack and defense feel totally different. And you're battling your own time so it feels worth it. I loved playing the mothership level where you start out in a spaceship. So cool.
Just a few minutes ago i won the final Map of Unreal Tournament GOTY Edition
It's just one of the best games i've ever played!!!
You are the real champion.
1999 was my favorite!
2004 was awesome as well
"It's our heritage, it's in our DNA, it's what we do... Unreal Tournament, it's in our blood... I can't see us not making Unreal Tournament games"
FUCK FORTNITE :(
"Facing worlds", no other multiplayer map can top this one, especially for it's fantastic music.
If anyone wants to know Unreal Tournament 4 is available and free to play. Still a pre-alpha build - meaning it is in the beginning stages of development. Although not a finished game it already has incredible gameplay.
Update: UT4 has been abandoned in favor of counting the cash from Fortnite.
Was talking about how bad i miss this game to a friend(I played UT2K, 2K4 and UT3) and now..seeing this just brings tears to my eyes. I've REALLY missed this game and i do hope it stays true to the previous ones in terms of movement et al
Funny how they skipped Unreal Tournament 2003, though it's a real existing released product, it's like Epic choose to completely ignore that one, lol!
More or less is a UT 2004 an renewed UT 2003
I hated it when they changed the title from 2 to 2003, I was like WTF, is this gonna be some FIFA / Madden shit with a new release every year?
CTF on Clanbase in the 90s was a blast. I miss those days.. :( CTF-Eternal Cave was my fav.
UT 3? UT 4 pre-alpha?
I have a fx8350+r9 270x and I'm still playing UT99 GOTY and Age of Empires: The Conquerors.
I dont need to move on... :(
Have a GTX 970, still play UT99, 2004, DOOM 1&2, and AoE 2.
I don't need to move on either. :,(
age of empires 2 on voobly, hell yeah
I remember playing this game when I was about 6/7ish, it was the game to play at the time! Millions of players online, there will never be an FPS like it and I'm going to download this ASAP!
my license plate says "UT2003" :D (really)
The music from UT99 the dnb = literally the best video game music of all time.
UT99 HD REMAKE!
Facing World Unreal Tournament 4 remake is already there)))
the atmosphere is not the same as in the first UT, the first game was more gloomy and gothic, there was more space
lmao thats funny considering epic doesnt give two fucks about the game series that made them relevant in the first place
One of the best you Tube videos for Me, thanks for making soooo good games :)
I still play unreal tournament today, its awesome :D
Just love it
I like how they ignored UT 2003. xD
UT99 is a game with heart and that is why it is still played. After that it became too commercial, productive and graphic card sales focused. Unfortunatly I dont think it will change with the next UT.
Need to update Unreal and make it live again
Oh man, that guy with the fauxhawk sure loves his own game.
Not many games that are pushing 15+ years still have out of the box online multiplayer support, but UT99 does, which says a lot. Compare UT99 with Quake 3 Arena in terms of gameplay depth (they were released about the same time) and you can easily tell how much better UT fares in comparison
Except Q3 is much better.
disinfect777
Maybe. but that's subjective. Q3 has good deathmatch but UT has more game modes and instant online play.
Q3 wall jumping everywhere was epic(mind the pun)
You're forgetting about Unreal which is why UT99 even existed in the first place...
UT 99 is still the best to this day in the Unreal Tournament series
Like they said "you can have it right, or have it right now" so what would you rather have an EA game or an Unreal game?
One of the best game-series in the known universe! Love unreal tournament and 2k4! so epic!
UT and Q2 were my fav multiplayer games
my favorite game and ive only had it for a few months
We need a new UT! Bring it on Epic!
Yeah, come on! We're long overdue! We need something that brings UT back to it's roots, in terms of plot AND gameplay (hell maybe even art design too lol)
But most of all, we need something that brings the COMMUNITY back.
Wow this game gave me 15 years of fun!! Loved it.
Facing Worlds was created by a "crazy Frenchman". Well, I have that guy to blame for literally playing FW for thousands of hours alone, let alone CTF. Great times!
Thank you so much for uploading! I really enjoyed watching this.... *looks on eBay for an ACTUAL unreal tournament trophy.
Yeah thats why you choosed Gears of War crap instead of Unreal Tournament
***** Perhaps... but if it wasn't for him, there would be no unreal tournament, gears of war, and not even friggin Jazz Jackrabbit! The latter may even be his biggest gift to the world
CliffyB and his "vehicles was where the market was going" and then they don't even talk about the UT 2003 fail.
"Choosed"
Someone gears of war is godly tho
Honestly i don't mind Gears Of War, Atleast UT wasn't killed just so they could work on it
*_like they did with a certain, recent title..._*
