The crows...(sigh)...the crows. I totally understand people would find them very offensive, but to me, while I do think they are pretty bad racial depictions, they're NOT AS BAD as what other studios were doing with African Americans at the time (Look up the censored eleven and you'll know what I mean). However, it's one of those things where I wish Disney wouldn't make the crows like that because it does put Dumbo (one of my personal favorite Disney films as well) in a bad spot along with Peter Pan where important plot elements are focused on these negative stereotypes. Something I wish Disney would do more often is, instead of forgetting that these characters existed, they should bring them back, but make them more appropriate for a modern audience. Splash Mountain, the Native Americans in a Peter Pan PS1 game and the crow's cameo in House of Mouse are good examples on how you can tone these characters down to present them alright in today's society. Though, that's just me and, again, I don't blame anyone that do feel uncomfortable whenever the crows show up.

I agree with everything you said. I think one reason why I don't mind the crows so much is because I think they're actually pretty likable. They're fun loving, classy, witty, and sing one of the catchiest songs in the film. On top of that, their kinda the heroes of the movie. They're the ones that help give Dumbo his confidence back. Yes, it took Timothy to get him to keep going when he loses his confidence symbol, but Dumbo wouldn't have gone back to the circus if it weren't for them. If they included them in modern media and focused more on those redeemable qualities, they would be seen more as characters that represent playful stereotypes instead of malicious stereotypes, like The Swedish Chef, Speedy Gonzales, or Panchito and Jose.

In all honesty, I think I would've preferred "Dumbo II."
Even if the story was as terrible as it sounds, I assume it at least would've been neat to see the modern animation team's interpretation of the world and art style.

@@Dimensioneer88 That's why I usually prefer the sequels to the remakes. The only exceptions to me are _Cinderella, The Jungle Book_ and _Lady & The Tramp. Christopher Robin_ doesn't count as a remake because that at least had an original story.

21:36 What is with circus movies (this and The Greatest Showman) forgetting to give circus performers personalities? It's like the writers think "oh, they look funny and work at a circus, that makes them interesting enough, we don't need to do anything else with them!"

    About the amusement park;
Coney Island is the name of the (former) island/neighborhood, with multiple competing amusement parks. There was a dreamland there and it was destroyed in a fire... in 1911. Today it’s mostly public housing and a double decker elevated subway station

I'm a huge fan of the original too, although Pinocchio is my absolute favorite Walt-era film. That trailer to the remake made me legit-no-shit cry my eyes out, and since I am a glutton for emotional punishment, curiosity got the better of me.
It was amazing. WAY better than it had any right to be. I missed the shit of out Timothy, who's my second-favorite Disney sidekick next to Jiminy Cricket, but I can see why they didn't include any talking animals in this. It was so heartbreaking and sweet. And the ending... just... *kisses fingertips* PERFECT.

Out of the three entries in the (2019) trilogy, this was the one I was the least excited for, and the one I had the lowest expectations for. I'm optimistic for Aladdin, and I'm really excited for The Lion King. I never thought that Burton was a good pick for Dumbo, especially considering he can't movie anymore. Here's hoping the other two are better than this. Lion King is going in with the director of The Jungle Book (the best of the remakes so far), and an absolutely killer cast. Really excited.

In all seriousness, I liked your description on Dumbo and why you liked it so much but doesn’t its themes on prejudice and cruelty also apply to a lot of other Disney films? Beauty & the Beast even had a song about that (“We don’t like / what we don’t / understand / in fact it scares us!”) which is often read as Howard Ashman’s last “fuck you” to homophobes. Was it Dumbo’s way of telling it that resonated with you more than the others?

Tony Goldmark Yeah, I’ll give Dumbo that much. It was subtle and didn’t need to have a pretentious song about prejudice being wrong like some Disney films needed to have. At least in BatB, it’s a great song and I get the lack of subtlety was meant to be humorous in a way. Songs like “Savages” and “You’ll Be In My Heart” were way too po-faced and on-the-nose to be taken seriously, even though I know people liked them a lot. That’s just me. Thanks fo the reply!

  • @Evilgidgit4Ever

If the rumours are true, I really don't know how Disney would cut the crows out of the animated film once it goes on Disney+. Whether or not you consider the crows to be racist or not, they are essential the plot and help Dumbo learn how to fly. If they go and cut them out, it would be cutting out the most critical 10 minutes of the already short film, cut out the key song, and leave the film a mess. What, would Dumbo just randomly get drunk and then end up in the circus again with the magic feather? Would Disney animate an entirely new set of scenes to rewrite the plot? If they cut out the crows and their scene entirely, would they now be accidentally promoting Dumbo's flight coming from getting hammered?

I gotta be honest, Dumbo II looks like it would be better (or at least more interesting) than this movie. And who knows, maybe they’d have pulled off a Cinderella III or Lilo and Stitch 2 and made something not-terrible.

My takeaway from this is, if you go see Aladdin parentheses twenty-nineteen or Lion King parentheses twenty-nineteen, just go ahead and invite Crow, Gipsy and Tom Servo. Luckily for all of us Tony Goldmark fans, the worse the film is, the better the review will be. 😎

The crows take me back to a place where I was too young (and naive) to know what racism even was, so they were those weird-but-helpful crows. As an adult, they're racist as can be, but there's that disconnect between naive child and being grown up.
I'm not shocked this was another middling movie. I wasn't drawn in because it was so dull and muddy in color, when it could have been as vibrant as the circus actually is.

I’ll be honest: I’d live in Dreamland.
That little girl at one point had tears running down her cheeks, but her face didn’t change.

New Dumbo's made at least $100 million by now (and growing) only from parents/grandparents recognize the name and drag their kids to see the new one. Don't know how the other Disney dead-close remakes make a bajillion dollars when most people my age have seen and known them by default but what do I know about cinematic capitalism?
I was at the movies last weekend to see Missing Link and an older woman was reserving Tuesday tickets for Dumbo just shocked and amazed for five minutes that the theater allowed for reserved seating. I'd like to think that person only heard that Dumbo was in theaters and figured the original was back in theaters. Oops.

Disney films tend to find empathy for those who don’t fit the mold, especially in their 90s work.
      Beast: AIDS victims
      Aladdin: classism
      Quasimodo: lookism
      Tarzan: foster kids
