      @dougdelyser2734 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Autistic Dolphin54 I like to listen to metal genres with an emphasis on the guitar riffs and instrumentals, to me death metal seems to have a focus on the bloodcurdling screams, which I do like, but they're paired with uninteresting riffs and instrumentals that turn me away. Not hating on people who like it, it's just not my thing.

      I don't hate groove, but people conflate groove with core now in metal music. I don't hate chug breakdowns either, if it's not the hook of the band. (Like in bands like Carnifex, I love Carnifex.) But sometimes I just need my old reliable headbanging bands like CC. Brutal death wins for me almost everytime.

      Y'know, had you said something like this, say , 10 years ago, you would've had a ton of people telling you "UH! THEY'D NEVER DO THAT!" with more or less expletives and words. It's very interesting to see that that doesn't happen much anymore. Either metalheads have grown older and don't feel the need to be so defensive about the genre anymore, or they've just melded so much with internet culture that being a metalhead is just one facet of their personality and they've become kind of "cynical", for lack of a better word.

      @@vasvas8914 Guitar riffs, lyrical patterns, drumming, song structure, subject matter, production quality, etc. For the unknowing music listener it might be hard to tell, but Cannibal is known for writing catchy songs in the death metal genre, and they’ve never released a bad album. They’ve barely strayed from their formula, because that’s because it works. To me, it’s all about the guitar riffs with any death metal band. But George is a fantastic front man. If you look at live performances and talk shit, he’s addressed it. He doesn’t enunciate as clear as he does on the albums because it would kill his voice night after night on tour. He has to preserve it for longevity, The tone is still there, he just doesn’t separate his words as much. Some bands just sound unintelligible even on the albums. And death metal vocals are not just “screaming”. It takes way more practice and training than traditional singing. For the reasons stated.

    There are two kinds of music: original, authentic and compelling, and derivative, copycat and/or manufactured. I appreciate a lot of thrash and death metal, though there are just SO MANY that copy the same formula and even fonts and artwork, that both are hugely over-populated genres. But Cannibal Corpse are one of the innovators in their realm, so worth a listen. Thanks for the thoughful review- it is cool that you really listen and explain why it makes certain impressions on you. You get deep inside the music, and so hats off to you! I'll give this one a listen myself. I have to say though that I never understood why a genre that is so often dismissed entirely by the mainstream typically play right into their own stereotype with the gruesome but oddly funny bad art and splatter-house song titles. But that's just me. They probably don't give a F*** , so I guess you hardcore punk , and even most hip hop is that way too. Formulaic, but proud of it.

    Love this album. The more I've listened to it the more I dig it. Really appreciate the slightly different guitar tones on this album, wondering if they mixed in a boosted 800 a la Rutan? The guitars seem more clear and cutting with a greater high mid content and not as insanely distorted. Also dig the different variety in the solos and some more cool melodies here and there. These are also the clearest I've heard Corpsegrinder's vocals in a while, which were already pretty clear on albums.

    I thought it was really nice to see Erik Rutan back in the band he may not be the most instantly recognizable guitarist in Death Metal like Trey Azagoth from Morbid Angel or Chuck Schuldiner from Death. Yet Erik has always had a really great playing style that's also very versatile (see his work on the Absolute Purity album by the Progressive Metal band Alas). The crushing almost metalcore breakdowns were great (and I say that as someone who can't stand Metalcore) as well as the almost groove metal late-stage Pantera riffs as well.
    Overall it's a Cannibal Corpse album the guys have been at it longer than some Metal fans have been alive and while the last album I listened to by them (2006's Kill) was an interminable slog. Violence Unimagined felt downright sprightly and refreshed well as sprightly and refreshed as an album about gore, murder, and torture can be. It's also nice to see how consistent Corpsegrinder's vocals are over the album and of course, Alex Webster is one of the best Bassists doing it in Metal.
    Not to undersell Paul on drums becuese he's always been (again at the risk of sounding redundant) consistent. Though if I had a criticism it's the sound design and mixing as that's the main reason I quit listening to most forms of Heavy Metal as it all sounds too sterile and dry while the mixing overemphasizes the vocals and guitars to the detriment of the rhythm section. That may be me just being "picky" but the sound of most modern Metal irrespective of genre sounds just too clean and polished compare the mixing and production on a contemporary Metal record to something that was made in the 80s or 90s and it's night and day I feel.
    I digress though this was an excellent album my quibbling about sound design aside.
