1983 Ford Ranger Diesel

  • Here is an in depth video of my 1983 Ford Ranger Diesel. Out of all 1983 Rangers produced only 1% had the diesel engine. This was also the first year Ford Motor Company started using diesel engines in their F-series pickup trucks along with the rangers. The diesel engine in my ranger is a perkins built unit offered by mazda which was in cahoots with Ford in the 1983 model year. F-series pickups got the international built diesel engines. The perkins unit was offered with the new 83 ranger in both 83 and 84 before Ford went with a Mitsubishi turbo diesel for 85-88 models.

I’ve had an 89 that had a long bed, a 99 4x4 that had a extended cab and a 5 speed, and now I’m on a 03 fx4 with an extended cab I love these little trucks so fun to drive

The Mitsu 2.3L turbo diesel was the exact same engine used in that company's "Mighty Max" and the similar Dodge (Power) Ram 50 from 1983 to 1985.

Looks like a nice project. I'm on the lookout for a Ranger Diesel to run on vegetable oil. I had an '84 back in 2007 and it was a neat truck. Got a best of 33 MPG. Sold it for 1,000 and I regret it.

The doors rattle because the nylon bushing on your door strikers are gone. Replace them. There around 10 bucks at a local auto parts store.

i don't think the rangers had the nylon bushings on the door strikers.
i know that doesnt make any sense. i have several full sized 80s ford vans and trucks, all of which have the nylon bushings. my 83 ranger doesnt. i ordered new strikers for it. the new ones didnt have nylon bushings either.
my doors don't rattle though. go figure.

Nice, I just traded a 22 rifle for a 98 ranger sitting on a 1954 F1 truck frame with an OM617 in it, im pulling the OM617 turbo 5 cylinder, and plan on putting it in a 70 W200 I picked up for cheap. I really like the ranger rig so im pulling a OM616 non turbo four with a 4 speed (out of 240D I have and haven't been able to sell) into the ranger set up, then ill have the best of both worlds!

I owned one way back. That 4 speed transmission should have been a 5 speed at least. Terrible driving it on the highway. Ended up swapping the motor and tranny out of a Datsun diesel. Very easy swap and was a big upgrade highway driving.

What’s crazy to me is that these first gen American compact pickups were a fair amount larger than their Japanese competitors/captive import domestic versions of those same imported competitors, but they’re much smaller than a modern “compact” pickup, even the unibody ones such as the Maverick and Santa Cruz. I wish that small, truly compact body-on-frame trucks like this that are relatively simple and cheap were still being manufactured and sold today.

I bought one of those new in '83, sold it after 250,000 miles. That is a Mazda engine, not a Perkins. They used a Mitsubishi engine in later years, those had a belt drive injector pump. I have all the books for that truck, even a Ford book for the engine.

    • @bolensfanatic8770

Cal, thanks for the comment, Mazda didnt make this engine, they went to Perkins to have them build them and advertised them as there own but the same engines were used in forklifts back in the day and the models numbers are the same and all parts ordered were from Perkins. No different than Mazda making a version of the Ranger which is actually made by Ford

Door rattling is caused by the plastic sleeve breaking off of the stub in the doorjam, same thing happened to our '83 Econoline van.

the Toyo Kogyo engine in this truck was built and designed by Perkins in England. It's their 4.135. One problem this engine had was the head was pretty flat and thus, prone to cracking.
Cummins had a similar problem with their 470/504/555 V8's, for the same reason.
The "It B Shitty" engine was a much more reliable powerplant.

Im always looking for these, 86-89 6.9/7,3s never found a 4x4 yet so my search continues. Both of the diesel Rangers I found were under 2500.

I had a 1983 with the Mazda diesel. One day, I went to 84 Lumber to pick up some wood and drove inside their warehouse. I shut it off and walked around the truck where the sales associate was waiting. He asked me "Do you ever check the oil in that? It is rattling like crazy." When I told him it was a diesel, he was very surprised.

He is going to be doing the roof for me and the seam sealer in the drip guards. I am going to be doing a full repaint eventually but I want to take care of the rood first because i get a slight drip when it rains and the seam sealer is shot in that location.

A result of Ford's parnership with Mazda in those years. It's a Mazda diesel engine, was used in a few of the smaller Ford cars, as well. Perhaps Mazda sourced the engine from Mitsubishi? Perkins not likely. A great little truck!

its a perkins, mazda went to perkins for the engine. model numbers match perkins engines used in forklifts of the same era. escorts had a mazda diesel run on timing belts, this engine is all gear driven timing and the escorts were 2.0 diesel same as topaz and tempo's. this is a 2.2 perkins

If you lose engine You can swap perkins imr 34 engine 60 hp. Also you can fit 75 and 80 hp. It is very similar engine. .You can get good one on ebay from former yugoslavian countries. They have to many even rebuild. This family of engines where used in the trucks called TAM.

    • @carmiethompson2676

Perkins is a British Diesel Manufacture. They built diesel engines for many applications but their Achilles heel is that they custom built an engine for that particular vehicle. Unlike Deutz Engines(German) or the older Detroit Diesel for example, were they used the same bore/stroke & changed the number of cylinders for the application, Perkins built 'custom' engines. In-line, 'V', Boxer(or horizontally opposed, like the BMW motorcycle engine, or the older 'Beetle' cars). That made their engines more expensive then their competition. It also strained their budget to innovate to improve the engine efficiency, though they were durable. Why Ford choice the Perkins instead of another manufacture might be an interesting story. Having worked with Ford in the past as a Design Engineer, it was probably money. Ford, GM & Chrysler were S**t-hole customer's to their first-tier suppliers from my experience.

The paint peeled like that because of the primer used in the 80’s by Ford, that’s most likely original paint or if they did paint it again they didn’t strip the junk primer off. Sweet truck though

It was Mazda, not Perkins. Remember Ford owned 50% of Mazda So it was in their interest to use something in house - unfortunately Mazda did not have a suitable engine with enough power so in order to compete they went to Mitsubishi. Mazda has a long history of building its own Diesel engines, with the exception of a few units that were built under license. These three engines (GA/GB/GC in Perkins' internal parlance) were developed especially for Mazda and were never offered by Perkins themselves.

Love the truck! But be warned -- the bed will rust at the wheel wells, the cab will rust at the corners. My 1992 Ranger has both these problems.
And if you ever need parts, lmctruck.com does sell some OEM parts, and they've never steered me wrong.
By the way, you have the EXACT tailgate I want for my truck! The newer earlier 90s chrome tailgate covers are just too gaudy, in my humble opinion.
And bro...you have a couple chirps that may indicate bearings may be going out. Just saying. And for your belts, I'd say to check your tension measurements and adjust them. That should take care of the belt squeaks.
