I'm just seeing this video 29 Mar 2023. Steve, you are being very modest when you say that you you shouldn't be playing this drum. Sir, you are very good drummer. I love everything that you put out. You've got some great chops yourself. I do understand that you want to pay homage to the great Buddy Rich but don't sell yourself short. Great drumming. Keep up the good work!

Wow! This is probably the most coveted and awesome snare drum in history.
Nobody shows more enthusiasm, respect and admiration for the great drummers and their vintage drums like Steve does.
If anybody deserves to have this snare drum I think it should be Steve!
This also is one of the best sounding snare drums you have ever showcased. Rogers should have based the reissue on that exact model! Maybe they have, not sure but I think it was the maple interior with the reissue and not the fruit wood that I guess is one of the earliest incarnations of this incredibly historic snare drum! Maybe Buddy was using this particular snare when he was with Harry James while filming the tour in Japan around 64ish? There has to be a video somewhere with Buddy playing this exact snare drum I would imagine...? Of course he probably had more than one but an interesting rabbit hole to explore... It's a stock maple DS. Nothing special about it -- except for the former owner! He always played stock drums supplied to him. Is this the drum from SNBB?

Buddy did not play “stock” wood dynas. His drums were made specially for him at Rogers. As one example, his drums and did not have a tone control. All stock Dynas had one. Now, if Buddy did a clinic and Rogers supplied a kit, that would be different since it was just a one-time clinic event and wasn’t his primary stage kit. He’d use whatever was at the clinic. But, his stage drums were specially done for him. This applies to his tenure at Rogers and well as Slingerland., I have owned many examples of his drums from both eras and can personally attest to these facts. As for his cymbals, the late Lennie DiMuzio picked them for Buddy since Lennie knew exactly what Buddy wanted to hear. Even during Buddy’s tenure at Ludwig, he was a stickler and caused WFL Jr a lot of headaches! Also, as a funny aside, Buddy didn’t like the Slingerland snares and at one point was using a chrome over fiberglass Fibes with his Slingerland kit. It drove Slingerland nuts, but Buddy was SO dialed into the snare drum sound that he wanted only the best, and to him, that was his Fibes at the time. I owned 3 of the Fibes that were used but Buddy and they are truly superb.
@@stevemaxwelldrums Oh, interesting to hear. He played the super sens bronze Ludwig in 1980, his final period w/ em. At the Hwd Palladium in Dec of that year I was talking to him (he was really nice!), & I told him I loved his snare drm, what was it & he said Ludwig bronze. Then he said it was "just a fkkn' drum. It's got 2 heads & a snare!" (He didn't say it was specially made.) I told him it's the way u play it & he shrugged it off & dwnplayed it! Gotta love him! His true feelings vs how he dealt with the companies, I suppose. He got into an argument over that Fibes snare one night & left Slingerland that night. Whenever anyone gave him a hard time (inconceivable to me!), he always let 'em have it full bore. Nobody pushed him around if they wanted to live - he WAS from Brooklyn after all, lol!

Hey Steve! Pete Jones here! Always a pleasure to hear you play!! Hope we can visit this May in Chicago! Speaking of the Vintage Drum Show, every year I would walk around and over all the noise there would be this beautifully played snare drum sound and without fail it was always either Les DeMerle or my friend Steve Maxwell! The two best set of hands there every year! So, I say you are ACTALLY the person who should be playing this and as always, it sounds great!

Believe me Mark, I am SO tempted to keep it, especially since I have one of Louie’s as well. That would make quite a pair. But, alas, I can’t keep them all. Someone will get to enjoy this one.

Wholly Crap that drum sounds fantastic!!!!!
I always liked the Dynasonic, and wanted one, but I was a Ludwig fanboy at the time, and had the SuperSensitive. It was my favorite Rogers "idea" when the company started, along with that "red onyx" wrap. I read someone is making the Dynasonic snare again. I even bought a new Dynasonic strainer frame on Amazon, but I didn't realize I needed the special bottom rim to put it on my drum, so I returned it (free). Don't know how the new ones compare shell wise. That one is sounding very nice.

This drumset deserve to be played every night on stage and not to be exposed in a museum. I hope it will be purchased by an active jazz virtuoso. BTW what happened to the missing tom ?
The video is specific to the snare drum, which was Buddy’s. The set was not the focus of the video and is just one of our shop kits. The small tom was removed so you can see the snare drum better.
