Yeah, in this case I feel like BBB investors mislead themselves a little. It seems that Cohen filed honestly and people interpreted his fillings poorly. I personally doubt he really knew that wsb was going to get involved at all until after the price pumped. And when the price pumps like it did, you would have to be pretty dumb not to sell. Also, this is a good reminder that these people aren't your friends, aren't on your side, aren't necessarily people who's investments you should follow(due to risk tolerance and other factors), and probably are not fully aware of their influence over you. To Cohen, this probably seemed like retail degens randomly deciding to buy BBB for no good reason until people started throwing accusations.

Someone stated that Cohen, "filed honestly". OK, but did he sell honestly? Did he sell legally? My question is did he act on material non public information? For example, it was reported that Kirkland and Ellis, the well known law firm that specialises in bankruptcy, was hired. That report was on 18 August. Cohen had already sold. That might be sufficient to make the sale illegal.

And add the convenience of one stop shopping at Walmart and Target AND online shopping with delivery through Amazon definitely hurt them. Also, location... It's near a makeup store and shoe store.. One can buy makeup at Kohl's and Target. And shoes can be bought at Kohl's, Target, Shoe Carnival and online. A once busy store is now a ghost town. Very sad.

Mostly, it is the ungodly amount of debt they have amassed. There are other things . . . poor inventory management and issues with vendors . . . but the biggest thing is debt. The model that many of these types of companies and their investors use rewards, at a certain point in time, the mis-allocation of capital. And they know it even at the time they take the debt on.
Once the bankruptcy happens-and it will happen-the majority of stores will not close in the near term. They may or may not be rebranded, and depending, the service will get worse. But many stores will continue to do fine daily business. Until the cycle begins again . . .
Amazon, Target, Walmart, and perhaps two other semi-regional but still major retailers for such things will survive. Boutique, high-end shops that don’t over-expand and your small mom-and-pop in certain neighborhoods will too. The others chains won’t. With inflation at 40-year-highs and interest rates being dragged up final because of it, servicing of debt is going to finish off what Amazon started.

4:16 I think "assuming the total value of the business remains constant" is a faulty assumption. It costs money to repurchase shares which reduces the value of the business. This is offset by the fact there are less shares. In the end, it really depends on how the market perceives the share buyback. Maybe they perceive that the buyback is a signal of strength or maybe they think the company paid too much for the shares.

    • @natevanderw
      @natevanderw ปีที่แล้ว

No. Stock buyback does nothing to market capitalization. As a shareholder, in increases your % ownership. That is it! At first you sounded like a RC culty, but now I understand you are not.

First my apology for accusing you of being a superstonk cultist.
For being an accountant (a CPA nonetheless), you sure don't seem to understand basic financial economics. Share buybacks on the open market increase buying pressure, which changes the supply/demand curve.
Once bought back, shares are either canceled, thus reducing the number of outstanding shares, or they are held by the company as treasury shares.
But more buying pressure = stock higher than what it would have been otherwise. If stock market values ticker XYZ 10 billion company, and that company buys back half its shares for 5 billion and canceled, you really think existing shares will be the same price on open market? No existing shares on the market price will essentially find a equilibrium at double the value, so that the market cap stays at 10 billion.

@@ktktktktktktkt Also, (just copy pasting from some article on Seeking Alpha)
Treasury shares are a portion of shares that a company keeps in its treasury that have been repurchased or never issued at all. Treasury shares have no voting rights nor do they pay out any distributions. These shares can be issued to the public in the event that a company needs to raise capital.
So essentially even in this case EPS raises on outstanding shares, and, potentially, dividend yield. But share price stays the same you say?

The CFO's sad suicide is meaningful, I think. If you are caught manipulating, and selling on non-public info, you would need a good lawyer, and you will be fined and the profits will be disgorged.
If you have used false financial statements to get the loans from Sixth Street Partners, and credit line increase from the not so innocent JPM, you will go to jail.
Defraud investors, you will be ok. Defraud big funds and banks, you will have big trouble.
Does anyone think the loan from Sixth Street and the line increase could be withdrawn? Is an accounting restatement imminent?
