Blood enters the heart from the lungs via a blood vessel called the pulmonary vein, which transports oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart. The muscles of the left atrium contract, and through an open valve, the blood flows into the next chamber called the left ventricle. The valve back to the left atrium closes, to prevent the backflow of blood. The walls of the left ventricle contract pumping blood into a blood vessel called the aorta, which carries blood around the body.
deoxygenated blood returns to the heart via vessels called the vena cava. They supply the chamber called the right atrium with blood. The muscle wall of the right atrium contracts pumping blood into the next chamber called the left atrium. The blood is then pumped to the lungs through a blood vessel called the pulmonary artery.
