More people need to realise where the song comes from, the movie is amazing. In combination with marcel it makes it so much more emotional, hes had to deal with so much, but he still keeps appreciating life and seeing the beauty in it. And I feel like this song sounds exactly like that. Like even though you have it hard, you keep going and trying to find the beauty.

This song makes me think like no other song. Because it's instrumental, I've listened to it while reading, and in my mind it is inextricably with Walt Whitman ("The Sound of Myself" is a fitting addition to Whitman's oeuvre, which is capped by his long poem "Song of Myself"). Whitman, both sensate and transcendent - Whitman, both earthbound and otherworldly - Whitman, at once firmly planted in the present, enraptured to ecstasy by the past, and electrified by the future. WW understood that the key to life, as it has always been, is the embodiment, envelopment, absorption of its contradictions. This song bears the tingle of epiphany that is somehow familiar, though I've never truly experienced it.
Whitman's poetry is littered with death despite his affirming that "there is no such thing as death." There are dead soldiers, dead mothers and children, dead animals. From his pen flowed the voluminous blood of the nineteenth century, bisected by our Civil War. It's reasonable to assume his belief in the continuation of life derives from the sheer horror of the fact of the union dead. Though I find great comfort in the idea of afterlife, or rebirth, or the permanence of the soul, I cannot escape from the logical side of my mind that tells me it is impossible. Much of my thinking about the Hereafter, to borrow the novel's term, comes from Nabokov's "Pale Fire" - a brilliant and difficult book with a character that, by way of an unbelievable coincidence, comes to belief in the existence of souls after death. But this conception of permanence affected me more by the beauty of its delivery rather than its internal reason. Maybe that is all that matters.
It is almost ironic that I listen here to an extended version of a song whose unedited structure resembles life - ecstatic, but brief. Even the title makes me think of the song as a kind of "audioization" of a human being, if I may invent a word. The looping can be thought of an invention of an afterlife - though even then, the song still ends. Perhaps they always do.
This song is a finished masterwork, a realization at the peak of necessity, a panorama taken atop the mountaintop, an elegant mathematical proof, a bewildering sight, a whirlwind romance in a nation whose language you do not speak, the sight of two bullets striking another amid the heat and flash of a gunfight, a Theory of One brought to bear on the Plight of the Many, a stream of light refracted through a crystal orb. It is a survey of your hair, nape, forehead, brow, temples, nose, nasal bridge, eyes, ears, cheekbones, lips, tongue, teeth, gums, uvula, neck, lymph nodes, collarbone, shoulderblades, sternum, deltoids, triceps, rotator cuffs, biceps, ulnas and radii, sternum, ribbones, heart, liver, lungs, esophagus, larynx, elbows, forearms, wrists, thumbs, fingers, palms, knuckles, back, spine, abnominals, obliques, tailbone, hip flexors, quadriceps, hamstrings, pelvis, glutes, knees and kneecaps, tendons, nerves, calves, feet, toes, ankles, heels, sinews, veins, and skin. It is an evocation of that which you wish it to be. The Sound of Myself - or, more precisely, of Yourself.
