Having been discriminated for being dark all my life, I was recently congratulated by my Mom’s friend(who now lives in US) over becoming “fairer”. She genuinely thought she was giving me a compliment. I realised then, I thought I moved past the colour of my skin... I was soo wrong!!

I fully endorse the views although I am not sure I agree with all information (for eg Hindi is not India’s national language, ‘higher caste’ people are not necessarily all fair skinned etc) . One wonders what may be the reason humans in general seem to be attracted to the fair skinned ? Iran has a skin lightening industry as well. They use fair and lovely to lighten their skin. What’s more sad is that they also have a plastic surgery epidemic. They have the highest rate of rhinoplasty in the world because they want slim Western and European noses. By the way, many Iranians and North Indians look identical due to shared ancestry. But you should know that Afghan Pashtuns are not Persian but NW South Asians and both NW South Asians and Afghan Pashtuns look identical due to shared genetic heritage.
