Because I thought I knew a bit about fighting after taking martial arts for some years but in retrospect I hardly knew enough. It takes many years of hard work in MMA to be decent enough to be a bouncer and have the skill to de-escalate a situation or avoid getting badly hurt and even then you can still get stabbed or knocked out anyway.

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's got Karate pedigree (and American Karate is pretty much Taekwondo) so the control with kicks are actually pretty common within good schools. My TKD teacher could throw quite a few dangerous kicks (and he was only at a national level in competition) and stop them in front of your face, while a Karate black-belt I used to train with threw flying sidekicks and pulled them before they hit.
      While semi-contact (though Wonderboy fought full contact) isn't the most realistic of combat sports, it definitely teaches you extreme control over your strikes!

      Absolutely! It's also why American Karate forms look different to Shotokan or any of the Okinawan styles and more like modern TKD forms. There are definitely some Japanese or Okinawan Karate school's, but there are less of them compared to the TKD derived style.

    That is a pretty key message regarding the positional disadvantage from pulling your punches and kicks to save your sparring partner. This is something that newer fighters tend to take advantage of in light sparring without even realizing that the opportunity wouldn't have existed at full speed, which is something that isn't even comprehensible until the ego has been adjusted. You know what?! I am teaching English and Chemistry...Which has NOTHING whatsoever to do with martial arts, but it is teaching.....And watching Wonderboy and You and Sensei Seth has taught ME a valuable thing: Teaching is so much more than transferring knowledge. A great teacher makes you experience and understand the lesson, even if it takes a long time.
    Interesting how Martial Arts can teach me about teaching others about something completely different.

    • @hard2hurt
      @hard2hurt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think martial arts has a unique intersection when it comes to learning and teaching. It is equal parts physical and mental while equal parts of it are performed consciously and subconsciously. Wonderboy reminds me to check kicks the same way mother lions knock over their cubs to teach balance. He is making a conscious decision to physically kick me again after I missed a block, and when I reflexively check he intentionally slows to reward me getting the exchange right.

    He makes an amazing point. Sparring with team mates should allow you to practice combinations on a moving, adaptable target that isn't defending at 100%. Plus a defender can work on evading and getting a "feel" on the techniques and strategies of an opponent before committing to knockout combos.
