    When I was writing Star Wars fan fiction, I gave my protagonist an R5 which he kind of bonded with as they had both felt that the world looked down upon. The smuggler actually spent enough money to purchase a couple of R2s on his R5, often adapting parts originally intended for R2s. About the only issue the droid still had was its personality matrix, it was sharp tongued sarcastic and had figured out how to swear in droidspeak.

    • @watch50er
      @watch50er ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Droid therapy! But only the physical aspect took fully.
      Starwars makes me think about how awesome droids are and I’m sad when some droids are just too basic or poorly made to be of practical use.
      Kind of a crazy idea but it also occurred to me to envision various astromechs no matter how old or model forming a community of sorts in a ship/ ship turned settlement where the R4s maintain things including the R5s, R3’s maintain the reactor generators, R1s serve as more stationary workers in their own stations made for them where things are brought to them more often than the other way round as well as serving as memory for less common ships, machines,and such , the R5s are retro graded and fixed as needed with whatever is available for support roles and R2s are the primary innovators that improvise create and help plan/install where the others fall short. The P2 took a lot of work to bring to speed with the R1s
      The R6 is a priss…. But the R7 after much tinkering makes up for it.

    Ironically, in the first film Episode 4 (and i believe the entire original trilogy) all these types of droids were simply referred to as "R2 units" (except for R1). Its why Luke calls the red R5 an R2 after its motivator blows up. The name changes started with Kenner Toys. In order to market the above mentioned anonymous red droid, they renamed it R5D4 in order to sell it as an action figure. Renaming most of the other droid types in the original trilogy came much later.

    A memorable history lesson for sure, But as for the best Astromech well on paper maybe you are right however if it weren't for R2D2 the galaxy would be lost to the dark side. How many times has R2 saved the day? Several by my count. Therefore I chose R2D2 as the #1 Astromech he goes far beyond doing his job the best!

    The inability of R-series Astro echo to speak basic was a feature not a bug. Astromech droids are clearly more intelligent than most organics. If they had the ability to communicate like organics it would lead to one of two reactions: organics would resent them or organics would idealize them. In both case it would inhibit the unit’s ability to function efficiently in tandem with its owners and operators.

      I'm not so sure that's canon anymore. I believe in the disney ANH Novelization, it's R2-D2 who talks to R5-D4 and pleads with him. R5 has like a gut feeling that he was also apart of the rebellion, like the word was just familiar even though he had a memory wipe, and he fakes a malfunction to get R2 sold.
      Before that though, the original ANH novelization stated that R2-D2 sabotage R5 in order to escape.
      Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the former is the current canon explanation.

    The R7 never made sense to me. Guess they don't have reverse compatibility?
    OK, new fighter, needs more and more specific abilities, I can buy that, but if it's only going to work in that one craft, why not just build it into it? Much simpler approach, and it worked for the delta 7s.
    It can come out to accompany the pilot, but that's not what its for. It could basically do the same via comms.
    Why not build one with the new specs that could in a pinch serve aboard a "lesser" craft if need be?
    I might also be biased against the e wing, sorry, it's just ugly in the bad way. The k wing is ugly in the good way lol. Now if someone would just make a kit dammit.

    • @DFX2KX
      @DFX2KX ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my guess, or at least why I'd opt for a removable doid over the Aethersprite half-droid approach, would be security. Your droid can go into the briefing room, physically jack into a terminal, and download the jump coordinates, then physically take them to your ship. No transmission at any point. Now, *any* astromech can do that of course, for the same reason IRL fighters still use freaking tape drives in some cases. But that ability is nothing to scoff at, so it might be something a manufacturer would opt for a specialized droid for.
      My assumption as to why it couldn't attach to other starfighters? llimited socket-space. if the E-wing required some unusual connectors or extra cryptographic hardware, that might get in the way. Buuuuut I'd agree that making it at least basically backwards compatible wouldn't be a bad idea even if it increased cost. a Droid's gonna be cheaper than the fighter it's stuffed in regardless.

    Solid rundown.
    I think you were a bit harsh on the R4, though. For all that it was a stripped down R2, what was left was polished and refined, and its price was still cheaper than the R5. For a small business or hobbyist mechanic the R4 was a quality product. The designers paid attention to what the customers needed and wanted, and the R4 delivered.
    But if I had to pick a favorite, I have to pick the R2. I'm not fond of the flowerpots and the R8's camera is just weird. That leaves the 2, 3, and 7. There's no contest.
