Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Review of Season 2 episode 5 where we have ditched Gandalf and the hobbits. Elrond is nowhere to be seen and Isildur is on holiday. Instead we have dwarves hunting for light while talking about how they don't need light. Celebrimbor realising he made evil rings but deciding to make even more of them for no reason. And Sauron is standing around pretending to manipulate people while seeming to luck into every event. Even I never expected for them to just make Celebrimbor knowingly make evil rings of power. right at this point if you take this show as a comedy it's gold! the first female dwarf woke the devil because she couldn't shut her mouth.
I don’t think it’s the balrog she woke I think it was the monster from the fellowship. It’s said that it woke deep in the waters below the mountain….but, a balrog makes better television I guess🤷🏻♂️ since they are off key on everything else, could’ve been sleeping in the water.

Nah, only deranged ones. Selling morally gray antagonist has been a trend, with little success, for they are not interesting at all. The motivations are feeble at most if not inexistent.
Elendil the Tall (a seven foot tall behemoth of a man, who fought THE SAURON in a tag team with THE Gil-Galad, sure they both died but Sauron is a freaking MAIAR!)...has issues...breaking free from a SINGLE guard...is INSULTING
The real Elendil would have gripped that guys forearm and turned his bone to powder. These writers have no idea what makes fantasy so good. Why is everyone such a meek little human as if they've never lifted anything heavier than a feather. The elves too aren't mystical and ethereal so why the King's men even exist, I don't know. How could you ever be jealous of the elves when you have some of them several thousands years old but have the emotional range of a teenager in puberty. The dwarves are closer but there's something off with them too and I can't quite place it yet... maybe it's the magic singing thing. Dwarves just shouldn't have magic, expect in like items from the elves, and should be experts of everything down under.

Wow, good catch there, lol. Now we know. And you are correct, they've said in interviews, such as with THR, that their pitch was to make a series based on PJ's prologue. Then, as they got further and further in the showrunner audition process, they were forced to fill in their idea, and also to sell themselves as Tolkien nerds, to they went to the books for more details. I'm sure neither knew the lore much before then, especially the brown haired one, Payne.

@@KeytarArgonianThe whole reason the Rings of Power is the way it is, is because Christopher Tolkien didn't want Jackson to be involved in anything, and then his son Simon demanded they make it bad, because he hates his father and grandfather. But the writers are still basing it off the films, not anything Tolkien wrote.

If I knew nothing else about this show, that first clip of actors trying to promote it would make me hate it.
Is it just me, or have actors (and showrunners/directors) gotten really bad at advertising their shows/movies? I know that it's the words of the marketers more than their own, but people seem so much more awkward or aggressive nowadays. It's like confidence, charisma, and professionalism have faded away.

Why must they make Tolkien sensual? They’ve taken the pinnacle of the modern western world’s literature, and turned it into the most basic and rudimentary of filth, meant to appeal to the very lowest common denominator.
Of course, I know _why_ they did it, it’s because the writers, show runners, and producers themselves are far too stupid to appreciate anything even resembling art-let alone Tolkien-so they had to bring it down to their level. It’s just that it hurts so much to see something so great made animalistic and stupid. There’s no intelligence in sexuality, it’s carnal and thoughtless.
Because they're desperate and know that "sex sells". But since Hollywood's spent the last decade making everything sexless and aromantic, they've forgotten how and when to do it.

If the dwarves need sun for crops, how about open the door and go outside. Do they absolutely need to have their farms inside the mines?
Or they could build terraced fields on the outsides of the mountains, positioned to get the best sun. They could use mirrors or mirrored metal to direct more sun when needed, and they could cover the field if it was too rainy or chilly or windy. Access through hidden stone doors.

@@suburbanbanshee As far as I have heard, that is in fact what the dwarves were said to do in the books; they grow their crops outside in the mountains in the sunlight, but still outside of the mountains. And otherwise they traded minerals for food as well.
Why not go ouside and have a freaking garden near the door set some guards there and problem solved.

If you thought Sauron was the darkest thing in Middle-earth, wait until you see this episode. It’s like the writers decided to channel their inner Balrog and set fire to any hope of a coherent plot. Watching this episode is like being trapped in the Mines of Moria-dark, confusing, and you just want it to end.
The characters stumble through their lines like orcs in the daylight, and the pacing is slower than an Ent’s afternoon stroll. The only thing more tragic than the fall of Númenor is the fall of this show’s quality. If Celebrimbor’s rings were as poorly crafted as this episode, they’d be falling apart faster than the plot.
In summary, if you’re looking for a reason to despair, this episode delivers. It’s the perfect way to remind yourself that even in a fantasy world, things can always get worse.
I enjoyed the creative use of simile in this comment.

Somewhere in this episode, authors casted their own views onto Sauron and Celebimbor. "Oh, these rings are not as good as expected. Let's make more of them quickly!". The same what they themselves are doing with more and more shows of below-mediocre quality...
They should've named the series The Rings of Sunken-Cost Fallacy.
Maybe the show is a loss leader for millions of fans buying the original trilogy or the books as a form of therapy. Or maybe they are Prime-ing us for season 5, LotR, the Vicious Cricle’s End

I don't mind a story done right where you can see evil become evil, whether you believe it was always there or newly rooted. But this ain't done right.
It's impossible to make Sauron or the orcs in LOTR appear sympathetic when the inspiration for them came from Tolkien experiencing the evils of war and it's somehow made even worse by nobody involved in this show having anything resembling any form of talent but I guess that is what is to be expected when the end product amounts to nothing more than absolutely garbage "fan" fiction.

In the lore the rings didn't affect the dwarves as much as Sauron expected because they were too stubborn.
They love mountains, they love mining, they love valuable metals and jewels, no time for evil doing.
It just enhanced their NATURAL greed. So Durin saying Durin wasn't greedy before makes no sense.
Nevertheless they did end up affecting them although in different ways
If Lord of the Rings was made today the extended cuts would have entirely focused on Samwise, Frodo, and a bottle of coconut oil.
If they did that with Nori and Poppy the show would finally be worth watching.

Amazon's writers invented a new genre - fantasy revisionism. They butchered the original story so accurately, not missing a single detail. Tolkien fans are building walls of text detailing all these inconsistencies between the books and RoP, but it's easier to count what hasn't changed - only several names...

I think it was Little Platoon I heard say that the people writing this show don't know how anything works in the natural world. I think he was correct! Precious metals are not magnetic, people or elves don't survive walking through pyroclastic flow, mining doesn't work that way, and if a king gives an order and no one listens to him he's not actually a king. There is no next time with a kings order....this show has the worst writing in history. What makes it really bad is that the writers, showrunners and actors are proud of this. Some shows are just bad or poorly written, but this show is downright embarrassing.

Did you watch the episode? King Durin has marked area and walls not to be touched towards the end of the episode, Narvi is shocked when he is then ordered to ignore those instructions. When the King approaches the wall , Prince Durin actually says to him "it's a supporting wall". That means they are strictly under instruction not to break it, no matter what's behind it because it may collapse on them. It's why he tells workers to go home.
The logic is RIGHT THERE in the episode. you guys approach everything because you want to hate it. You can be legitimately pissed about some things, I think they're rushing the time line and should have taken each season to be a telling of different ages, so you could have had the timelines to breathe. - but stuff like wall isn't a problem. Or even calling the watcher in the water.
Gandalf clearly says in the Fellowship, and it's also mention in the Silmarillion that the Dwarves became too focussed on enriching themselves and slowly cut themselves off from middle earth.

One thing about Sauron, is that even in the lore, he does see himself as the bringer of Order. He believes that true Order can only arise through the domination of all life.

I think I can see where they want the story to go - Adar's orcs being the good guys who march on Eregion in order to kill Sauron, because Sauron told them he was there, only to have the Elves think they are bad guys and fight them, thus forcing the nice and good orcs to flee to Mordor and ally with Sauron for survival.
One thing that i've come to realize thats just overall wrong with this show, as a concept. LotR has always seemed "Big" to me. This show is making it feel small.
The Door of Durin was created well before Sauron made the One Ring. We know this because the door was shut when Sauron attacked the Elves in SA 1697.

Imagine what we could get if the amount of money spent on this show got into the hands of people who care both with respecting the lore and creating a good tv show. Unfortunately, it seems we stepped into the wrong timeline and all the good people in Hollywood is gone...
Here's the problem: They only have the appendices, and not the Silmarillion. So, they may depict events described in the appendix, but may not depict it as described in the Silmarillion, or the main novels. Celeborn, for example, was only mentioned in the main books, and not mentioned in the appendix, and could therefore not be used because of the limited license Amazon obtained.
Amazon in their great wisdom (not) passed on the Russos, which would have saved money for them right there, since then they'd be on RoP and wouldn't be doing that super expensive series they did instead, Citadel, lol. Plus, the Russos, unlike these showrunners, knew enough of the lore to understand which eras were covered by the rights Amazon had, and so their show would have been very different, set in the 3rd Age. The RoP showrunners otoh were just thinking "A series version of PJ's prologue!" without much knowledge of what they would or wouldn't be able to do.

An elf wouldn't get sent to the Unseen Realm because they exist in both the Seen and Unseen at the same exact time. This is why they appear more angelic to someone in said realm or passing through into it. This is why in the book when Frodo was becoming a wraith he saw Glorfindel basically like the Arche-angel Michael and in the movie Arwen appeared even more beautiful and radiant.
The reason why the 9 became wraiths like they did and were "invisible" is because their physical bodies died and their rings bound them to Arda making it so they could not pass over, so they only had form in the Unseen Realm. The One only makes mortals vanish because they are not like the Elves, Maia or Valar. Essentially, wearing any of the rings for an Elf would not do this. At best their current physical form would have to be slain but odds are because of how the rings work, they'd be trapped there in that body still until it was destroyed.
This “shipping” movement is one of the most ridiculous things to ever come to tv series…

There is no reason why the Dwarven rings would cause paranoia, they aren't the same thing as the one ring. Also, the Sauron was unable to control the dwarves even when he wore the one ring.
The dwarves were still corrupted by the rings once Sauron made the one ring.
Without the one ring, they rings made them rich.
Once Sauron made the ring, it made them greedy, too.

The crazy part is... in the books the dwarves weren't effected by the rings in any negative way. Sauron couldn't understand it but dwarves are a completely different breed than humans. Also let me remind AMAZON the 3 rings for the elves were made without saurons knowledge
All 19 Rings were originally made for Elves and they were given to Dwarves and Men as a "plan B". Also they did negatively affect the Dwarves but did not make them as susceptible to control as they did for men.

Because it is being featured heavily on Prime, It is easy to accidentally press a button on your fire cube/stick controller and RoP begins to play. I bet they are including these as viewings. I have made a point not to watch a single episode but because I use a cube as my main media player it has happened at least 3 times for me ..the cat started it once too ..
The 25 million number was originally reported as "25 million people sampled RoP", I know you're right.

Yeah, among other things, I remember for the last ep of s1 they had RoP filling the entire front screen of Prime Video with a large PLAY button, lol. So desperate. There was also a big watchlist button, which I accidentally hit when trying to get off that frickin' page. It's pretty telling that, even with all the tricks and unprecedented heavy promotion, their views have tanked so much since the s1 debut.
They did the same for season 1. There were reports of the show just playing on its own too when logged into Prime.
100% When the first season came out they forcibly added it to 'auto-play' after all kinds of stuff, clearly just to farm views (even if you have auto-play disabled it still does it). I remember it freaking started autoplaying after I watched an IRON CHEF episode, for crying out loud!

Heh, now that I think of it one of the desk girls at my former dentist's would have been a great Galadriel. Her hair was just like Galadriel's in the PJ films, and she was so pretty she glowed. Dunno about her acting ability, but I'm sure her Galadriel would have at least seemed nice.
It would be hard to top Cate Blanchett's portrayal. She captured the regal aura that Galadriel is supposed to have, while also being just on that knife's edge away from being incredibly dangerous. The fact that they kept trying to claim that Galadriel in this slop is "young and impulsive" when she's 5000+ years old is so damned stupid...
She looked good in the first 3 episodes of season 2. Not the prettiest but not bad, though if she is in my bed i would put a sticker on her mouth cause her talking is just annoying with the freaking r's that go one for 30 seconds.

They got the rights to Numenor but didn't bother to remember that Numenor worshipped Iluvatar directly, nor that the souls of Men (and hobbits, being technically Men!) go directly to the Hall of Mandos upon death--where they have an express lane right to Iluvatar.
But I suspect they're not going to do the canonical "Numenor converts to the worship of Morgoth, which looks suspiciously like Moloch worship" plotline.

The timeline is so god dam screwed, I don't even know where to start at this point. Nothing makes any sense with how the world is suppose to work at this point. You can't salvage this show into a good second age story. There's nothing of anything substance in this show, all lore references are merely a mirage fooling you into thinking it's really there when it isn't. Very plot thread and character is shallow and poorly thought out. My brain can't comprehend how anything in this show lines up.
It doesn't. The writers are terrible and, on top of that, don't care, and don't have to. They've got a contract for five seasons; it doesn't matter how crap it is, they're getting paid.

Most people have regular checks in their lives that serve as reminders to behave well, so we never even think to commit atrocities. One’s perspective easily changes when those checks are removed.
Perhaps the greatest curse of stupidity is that self awareness requires intelligence. So when dumb people make something that is a reflection of themselves, and people can see how bankrupt, how evil or how just empty of any decent story is is, the stupid will not be able to see it, but they will see it is still a reflection of themselves. And because people reject the reflection, they will feel personally attacked. Self reflection and self awareness will never be in their grasp.

What this show needed was heroic characters. A good example of a fantastic movie with two heroes who are not on the same side was TROY. I loved Achilles and Hector both. You root for them. They are developed. When they fight you care.

The complete lack of understanding for what the rings were and what they did is staggering. The Dwarven rings did nothing of the kind that is shown in this show. They didn't whisper or have the same effect on people as "The One Ring". The Dwarven rings amplified the worse character traits of those who wore them. The only part of any of this that was semi accurate would have to be the "ring tribute" as the ring would bring out and amplify the greed inherent to dwarven character. Honestly, this show is just bad...
