I think that Vince, Bret and HBK were all at fault for different reasons. But there were many solutions to the problem which didn't require the Screwjob to actually happen and could've saved face for everyone.
(I do believe that Bret would've honoured his word and relinquished the belt on RAW though)

    • @jetleeroy33

Right. Undertaker is on record saying he could've easily had a match with Bret where he wins and then subsequently drops it to Shawn.
Bret would've gladly dropped it to Undertaker or even Ken Shamrock...either of whom could've had a short reign before dropping it to Shawn.
Bret has always said his problem was when he confronted Shawn during that time about doing business and acting professional but that Shawn flat-out said he wouldn't do the same.

It's also not good for business for Bret to win the title and then vacate it and head over to the competition. It was a tough position to be in and decisions were made.

Vince wanted the screw job to happen because it was a great story. Vince didn’t know that Bret would have so much bad luck and have to end this legendary story not being able to wrestle or really finish it. If Bret didn’t get injured or lose his brother Owen, Bret comes back to WWE healthy, the match vs Shawn Michaels would be a five star classic. It’s just too bad WCW had the bright idea to put Bret vs Bill Goldberg. I don’t think Bret should’ve went to WCW, maybe go to Japan. WCW never knew how to push the smaller wrestlers that’s why most became bigger stars in WWE. WCW was too political and Eric, Hogan and co would’ve never let Bret Hart have his due.

Who would i blame for the screwjob.
In story mode? Rowdy Roddy Piper. He set the iron match up when he was a guest GM.
In reality? Alundra Blaze/Medusa. If she hadn't dumped her belt on WCW, Vince wouldn't have been afraid Brett would do the same.

Bret wasn't in on screw job, 100 percent certain. Bret is my favorite of all time, and I'm not trying to knock him when I say he's not that good of an actor except in a physical working context. He has a certain smile that's so big of a tell id hate to see him play poker. Just watch him recently when on the receiving end of slightly unexpected zingers from MJF and Gunther.

When Vince was having no idea what action to take, Cornette finally ran out of patience and said, "Goddammit, Vince, just screw him! It's YOUR belt! Just double-cross him and take the title off of him that way!". A screwjob was an idea Vince HAD considered, but only as an absolute LAST resort, and he really didn't want to do it until Cornette suggested it. THEN when Vince went to HBK and HHH for a second opinion, HHH echoed Cornette's idea: "Vince, fuck him, okay? If he's not willing to do business, then you need to do business FOR him."

I honestly loved him as a kid but cannot stand him now. So many guys like him are so hung up on how wrestling was in the past and that's precisely why they have absolutely no relevance today. The screwjob wasnt between Bret and Shawn because of thier dislike of each other. It wasnt even a trust issue from Vince and whether Bret would relenquish the belt on Raw the next day. The issue was Vince and his ego. He was the owner and Bret was a peon that was leaving his company.
So i believe it all lands on Vince and his ego. He wanted Bret to drop the belt and couldnt FORCE him because of Brets exit clause. Vince 100%.
