I think that Vince, Bret and HBK were all at fault for different reasons. But there were many solutions to the problem which didn't require the Screwjob to actually happen and could've saved face for everyone. (I do believe that Bret would've honoured his word and relinquished the belt on RAW though)
Right. Undertaker is on record saying he could've easily had a match with Bret where he wins and then subsequently drops it to Shawn. Bret would've gladly dropped it to Undertaker or even Ken Shamrock...either of whom could've had a short reign before dropping it to Shawn. Bret has always said his problem was when he confronted Shawn during that time about doing business and acting professional but that Shawn flat-out said he wouldn't do the same.
It's also not good for business for Bret to win the title and then vacate it and head over to the competition. It was a tough position to be in and decisions were made.
Vince wanted the screw job to happen because it was a great story. Vince didn’t know that Bret would have so much bad luck and have to end this legendary story not being able to wrestle or really finish it. If Bret didn’t get injured or lose his brother Owen, Bret comes back to WWE healthy, the match vs Shawn Michaels would be a five star classic. It’s just too bad WCW had the bright idea to put Bret vs Bill Goldberg. I don’t think Bret should’ve went to WCW, maybe go to Japan. WCW never knew how to push the smaller wrestlers that’s why most became bigger stars in WWE. WCW was too political and Eric, Hogan and co would’ve never let Bret Hart have his due.
Bret Hart is the epitome of a great, a true legend in the business who with one interview after another consistently dismantling his legacy. Sad to see him constantly taking a leak on his former glory.
Who would i blame for the screwjob. In story mode? Rowdy Roddy Piper. He set the iron match up when he was a guest GM. In reality? Alundra Blaze/Medusa. If she hadn't dumped her belt on WCW, Vince wouldn't have been afraid Brett would do the same.
