Birdwatching Tourists in Mexico Get Stopped by Gunmen

  • Two birdwatchers expected a quiet vacation taking photos of tropical wildlife, so nothing prepared them for the nightmare they experienced in Mexico. Aaron Payzant and Logan Howard were driving from Indiana to Cancun. They were on a back road looking for birds to photograph when out of nowhere, a truck raced past, and gunmen lept out and approached the car. Luckily for the Americans, the gunmen reassured them that they weren’t in danger, but warned them not to go further down the road.

These “gunmen” were definitely locals patrolling their village and making sure that the car that just entered their backroads wasn’t cartel affiliated. These American tourists definitely missed a no trespassing sign, that’s why the locals seemed so hostile at first.

Mexicans have a right to their land and their nation. They can run it how they see fit. If killing you and/or scaring you by pointing guns at your face is how they do it, and you have a problem with that... Then don't go there. That simple. Well, he got there and was fine for a few days, but then he got kidnapped when he was with his family shopping and got shoved into a car to who knows where. Then the kidnappers called his family from Mexico and demanded his family in the US give them a few thousand dollars in a few days or they would kill him. Thankfully the dude's family was able to get the money rly fast and they were able to get him back. The same thing happened but to this other lady in my mom's town except her kid was 4.

Cartels don't want to kill or kidnap tourists but if they find out where the main cartel attraction is, they would have to kill the tourist. The reason is that the Mexican economy heavily relies from tourists and if they keep killing tourists, the Mexican economy would cripple, same with the Cartels economy.
They most likely got the tourists to get out of there as quickly as possible to avoid death.

Its because you can still see his gay mannerisms even when scared for his life lol. That probably why the cartels let them go. They though there's no way they were with the opposition.

As a Mexican citizen, seeing the trucks they were in. Those were cartel members trying to find innocent Mexicans civilians to capture. It’s happened before. Here in Mexico the cartel is everywhere. This is why it’s so dangerous, never leave the big cities since there is more chance of survival there.
