    I've recently discovered that there are old species of fruits (like old varieties of apples, plums, etc) that are being reintroduced and brought back to consumers at least in Italy/Europe; I wonder if there might be something similar in USA, that could be a cool episode for fruity fruits!

    My mother in law still makes her own coconut milk for her curries, like she did growing up in Malaysia. She won’t use canned coconut milk. Fortunately, she has two sons who are willing to help scrape coconuts for the payoff of her homemade curry 😂

    • @MaxOakland

      Does homemade taste different?

    • @jahbern
      @jahbern 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MaxOakland yes. It’s very much based on what you are used to - I don’t consume much coconut milk, so it doesn’t really matter to me whether it’s fresh or canned. It’s kind of like Mac and cheese for me, to use the whitest possible analogy. You can tell the difference between Kraft and homemade, but people who have only eaten Kraft don’t know what they don’t know. And some even prefer Kraft because it’s what they are used to 😂

    Ahhh the memories. Growing up we had a couple coconut trees in the backyard so I grew up eating green coconut. Here (Hawaii) the soft meat was referred to as "spoon meat". I remember my dad scooping out a bunch of meat and blending it up with the coconut water then passing it thru cheesecloth to make coconut milk. He'd always use that to make haupia or add it to squid luau.
    Thanks for the memories!

      I was thinking that the yellow one tasted different because it was just a little bit older. Is this correct? Or do different varieties taste different. I spent a few years in the south pacific Islands and don't think I ever tasted 2 young coconuts that tasted exactly the same. I always put it down to age not variety. But I'm sure you have a lot of varieties in Hawaii, so you may know the answer to this question.

    • @kareny5438
      @kareny5438 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's very little to almost no liquid in the brown ones. The liquid is tasteless at that point. The delicious jelly part turns into the hard oily coconut meat you see in stores as shredded coconut.

    • @debgeisler4568
      @debgeisler4568 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kareny5438 We used to get the brown ones at the grocery store when I was a kid. My Dad was fond of fresh coconut from his time in the navy, so he’d get cravings. (They showed up rarely in a small town grocery store in Ohio in the 1960s.)
      He always got the liquid out by hammering a Phillips-head screwdriver into two of the three “dots”…then pour the liquid from one while the other let air in…then crack the nut for the meat.
      Some of the meat would go into savory dishes (esp. with pork or shrimp), and some would get shredded, mixed by Mom with melted chocolate, and turned into OMG haystack candies.
      I remember the liquid as more flavorful than the stuff we can buy now in cartons - and which comes out of the green coconuts. It is fine - and great for hydrating - but different from the older liquid..in my memory, anyhow. (Mostly, I’m just curious what the liquid losses and changes are. Science!)

      My husband gardens and grows micro greens, and his favorite store-bought soil has coconut coir added to it. He doesn't like to use anything else for his micro greens.

    Emmy have you every tried paw paw fruit? It grows in the US but it's a wild one hard to find commercially

    Green coconut jelly is great in a banana smoothie, I’ve been getting them in Thailand a lot 👍

    Are you going to do a follow-up video about how the yellow one tastes vs. the green one? If the water was so different, I'd be interested in how the meat is, and whether or not it's different as well. I really hope you do.

    1:08 I freaked out for a second looking at the background, because I thought the little black fibers hanging down was a GIANT SPIDER, it looks so much like one!

    Best electrolyte!! When I lived in Africa and Hawaiʻi, if I felt a bit "off" would just buy one off the street with a straw and it would really help. 👍🏻🌴

    I’ve heard sprouted coconuts are like candy. I’d love it if you could try one for us.
