Anong ibig sabihin nito? Ano ang tunay na Maharlika? Alamin natin ang katotohanan!

    About Kirby:
Kirby Pábalan-Táyag Aráullo is a renowned Filipino culture bearer and currently the National Coordinator for Culture and Heritage for NAFCON (National Alliance for Filipino Concerns). He is a Dátû and Lakan by blood, a direct descendant of the last Kings of Luzon (of both Lakanúlâ of Tondo and Rája Matandá of Maynílâ, who are also of the Sultans of Sulu and Brunei, and of the ancient Mahārājas of Majapahit). Dátû Kirby's upbringing exposed him to the contradicting worlds of traditional politics and grassroots activism.
Kirby is the co-founder of the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies, at the University of California, Davis, and has been teaching Filipino people’s history and writing in indigenous Philippine scripts (Baybayin & Kulitan) for over a decade. An alumnus of UC Davis, Kirby has also started his graduate studies in the field of history at Harvard University, and on International Human Rights Law at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium. He is a visiting professor at various colleges in the Philippines and a research fellow with Sínúpan Singsing, a publicly-funded institute for indigenous advocacy and the study of Kapampángan language, history, and culture.
Dátû Kirby is well-rooted in his culture and passionate about his heritage; he strives to decolonize Philippine history and democratize Ethnic Studies through knowledge and play.

Maharlika was never a factual concept precolonial wise. The PH was never a unified country before the Spanish came, with many Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and animist kingdoms/groups/tribes that had their conflicts, politics and trades with each other. Just look at Lapu Lapu and Rajah Humabon’s feud when Magellan and his crew came and witnessed.

In Pre-hispanic Panay and Visayas overall, we call that TIMAWA. Maharlika is just the Tagalog version of it. It means the free people. They are neither noble nor slaves. Hekasi and AralPan were my favourite subjects back then and this was touched on. That’s why I’m confused as to why where these “Kingdom of Maharlika” nonsense came from. I never learned that from school.

The precolonial Philippines dont have big structures because it invests itself in boats for naval war defenses and expeditions throughout the archipelago and neighboring islands. They are busy raiding other kingdoms for domination and conquest. It is not yet a one consolidated state to build structures for centralized power or dont even have one centralized religion to build temples and mosques atleast. On the shores comes islam influences but in the highlands there is a different story. The highlands of cordillera dont have ankor wats or mayan pyramids but it has its towering rice terraces as a prestigious man made structure to boast.

The Dapunta dynasty of Malay Srivijaya left Muaro jambi temple even though they waged several wars and were in constant hostility with their most competitive adversary and rival in java (Old Mataram kingdom)
The Sailendra dynasty of Javanese Srivijaya left Borobudur, they also raided many kingdoms (as far as southern chenla) as they expanded their dominion up north
Sanjaya dynasty of Javanese Medang who left Prambanan , they sailed far and even had great influence as far north as Luzon (LCI of the philipines)
The Sinelir dynasty of Javanese Singashari left several small to medium sized temples and statues even as they were constantly raiding and were actively invading the remnants of the once great Srivijaya in sumatra
Lastly, The Rajasa Dynasty of Javanese Majapahit. She left several well perserved documents as well as many temples and secular ruins, such as the ruins of fortress and palaces.
Her agresiveness can only be compared to Srivijaya of Sailendra era, and evidences of their agressive nature were even well recorded by the people and kingdoms Her navy had attacked (Malay annals, King of Pasai annals, Banjar annals, Nan sarunai Usak Jawa folklore, Sunda poets)
In the reign of Her third and fourth monarch, Her long agression made her not only once bu twice clashed with Siam of Thailand over malay peninsula
Her unbending will over expansionism policy sprouted many diplomatic tension with Yuan and Ming China respectively, resulting in the birth of Malacca and Brunei sultanate which sought protection and legitimation from the chinese court
My point is. WHY DID THE PINOY ANCESTORS DON'T BUILD MEGASTRUCTURES OR AT LEAST, SMALL ANCIENT TEMPLES?
in my opinion, it was't because the didn't have the reqired skills nor they didn't invest or saw the needs in building them. as an ocean warior society, just like any other society around SEA, the needs to at least had fortresses, palaces or walls should be clear to them.
once again, in my humble opinion, may be, the structures were destroyed, by either the nature itself or by the spaniards, or there was simply the lack in men power to erect such mega building (even borobudur needed almost three reign of monarchs to be completed, not to mention ankor wat), or perhaps, it was the building materials themselves that are lacking. all in all. it shouldn't be because ancient pinoy did not want to invest in such buildings as they focused more on military expense.
I could firmly say, NO, I believe it was not the case. if it was, then, what about Rajasa Majapahit and Sailendra Srivijaya? They spent almost 2/3 of their treasury to build their impaccable navy, and yet they still managed to left many ruins and inscriptions.

Maharlika is coming from the sanskrit "mahar" which means "great", "lika" which means "creation". (And as a group of people ie: Kalinga as ikalinga) iMaharlika as a land of great people and great creation. We used to be part of Majapahit empire in SE Asia thus Visayas from "Sri Vijaya". One can arguably notice how "Filipinos" as how we still carry the colonial name of this country excel in different fields specially in creativity and artistry around the the world. Words have meaning and carry different vibrations. Apparently, this country is named after King Philip II of Spain who died from Syphilis, STD. Lo and behold, Philippines lately has highest HIV infection growth rate in Asia-Pacific. No offense to HIV survivors and homosexuals but I'd rather go for a country name upholding the honor of our land and people.

Having and embracing our colonial past isn't shameful, ito ang dahilan kung bakit naririrto tayo as Filipinos. Mas mabuti nga at ang Spaniards ang nagcolonized satin (although di ko sinasabi na maganda yun) kung Dutch at British wala talagang matitira sa atin na native 😂. No offense but this is just delusional. The datu's of Tondo, Cebu, and Sulu and peoples of the Cordilleras didn't even consider each other as countrymen. If Spain didn't come there would be no Republic of the Philippines. Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao might even be different countries today if they weren't "united" by Spain.
Also, forgetting or erasing ones history is stupid and childish. Spain had been a part of our culture whether you like it or not. Ika nga ni José Rizal, _ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan._

Which means he had read and studied many books more than an average person... even I wanted to read those kinds of books but I don't have the authority to get one so....

The true history of the Maharlikans are not a myth. It was told by my teacher in high school. It was not concocted by any politicians. Some just make used of the word to link it to their agendas and myths grows along with it, then monopolized it. Let's begin with India...
When the hindunized kingdoms of india developed and prospered, it heavily influenced all of the astronesian animistic world in the malay archipelago. But something happened in India. The age of "enlightenedment". This shifted Bhramanissm to Hinduism, Hinduism to Jainism, Jainism to Bhuddism. This religions came from one root. They are all related to each other. The concept of the enlightenment is it can be achieved by good morals and good actions among people who suffers a lot and they also believe in the concept of karma. Bhrammanism never achieved this concepts because there are "caste systems" in the kingdoms of India. Slaves are usually the ones suffering under this religion. So Hinduism was developed. The Maharlikans of the Islands of Luzon brought this concept to abolish slavery (aliping saguiguilid, aliping namamahay) practiced by the Lakans. The Lakans are adherents of animism (ancestral worship) so the idea was not very appealing to them. There was also Islam developing at the same time who uses violence to propagate their reliogion in Luzon. The Maharlikans never retaliated to the Moslems because they believed in reincarnation and karma and respect all forms of life and they never can harm anything. They were almost wiped out because their religion does not adhere or require conversion unlike Islam. The Maharlikans believed that every person, Royalty or Slave are all noble blood. When they die, their spirit will all come back to the source. The mythical place or kingdom of the maharlikans are not really a myth. It is a place of perfect peace and harmony called Nirvana (heaven). The word maharlika came from sanskrit maharddhika. It means freedmen. They were freed from suffering and slavery by doing good morals (good actions) to attain "enlightenment" and Nirvana.
Former Pres Marcos used this idea "Maharlika" for his political agendas. The operation "Merdeka" to free Sabah and the Celebes from Malaysia. To incorporate it again to the sultan of Sulu. It was part of the British Indies and was federated to Malaysia.
Even Nazi Germany also monopolizes with this Bhrammin religion and copied their symbol the "inverted swastika" to represent them. Now it has a bad impression to most of the world countries.
Maharlikans in Luzon were simply ordinary merchants with trades in India. Yes they are warriors but "spiritual warriors" who want to free people from slavery and sufferings by adhering to Hindu/Bhuddism. In some textbooks, maharlika and timawa are the same, but in reality, people from luzon dont want to be called timawa and vise versa. Timawa in luzon has different / (not so good) meaning than in Visayas. The maharlikans can be loyal to a Datu, but most of them were not due to the nature of their jobs (seafaring). Alipins (slave) in Luzon dont have the luxury to be a seafarer just like the Maharlikans.

I still believe that we should change our name to Maharlika. Not as a “kingdom” but a as nation of free people, free from our colonial subjugators. Spain destroyed so many of our culture and its painful to think about it. Spain exploited and desecrated a lot of our culture and traditions, committed genocide of our people. The very word “Philippines” disgust me.
