I've watched a few of your videos David, and I can definitely appreciate how you are very explanatory, and yet to the point, and not dragging on the issue of what you're talking about to where it would create confusion to a lot of people. Nice and simplified! Great stuff bubba! I'll be sending you my ecu to be flashed very soon on my 2018 MT-09.
My high mileage 09 fz1 will run slightly rough rough under power at lower rpm’s 3k or less ….not while idling in N…and will pop a bit when letting off throttle after getting wristy….some older gentlemen in fz1 forums allude toward what you’re saying ,that it’s running lean and due to work that’s been done to the bike (b4 I got it ,ais block offs ,exup cables gone and after market can &midpipe etc) …causes the rumble and pops …I don’t know as I’m not even close to a bike mechanic lol… am still trying to get new plugs and coils Installed (procrastination is real 😜) hoping it helps .but wondering ..at a lil over 30k miles I think it’s due for valve checkup /adjustment(got it at 29700 so assume it wasn’t done) …could this be part of the rough low rpm /popping issue ? Does the rough rpm /occasional pop indicate I possibly might be damaging engine ?
A friend om mine put on a slipon an de-cat. On his MT 10 2021. When he dynoed it for fun eg 100% throttle it was extremely lean. Between 4500-7900 rpm the airfuel ratio was 17.5:1. Imagine then what AF-ratio is part throttle. I don’t know if you have different Ecu’s in the states compared to Scandinavia but no Euro-5 bikes go too rich here! Too lean everywhere rather.
Clearly shows who's in charge when it comes to motorized vehicles, whether the engineers or the bureaucrats. Engines that run that lean are not going to last nearly as long as engines that an engineer would approve.
Exhaust? As in the tail pipe is black and sooty? Depends on your driving habits, the fuel octane/quality, engine temperatures when you ride, how long you are riding, if your spark plugs are serviced, and finally what fuel mapping you have and whether it reflects any modifications you've done to your intake or exhaust.
Great PSA, David! Also a great reminder for those out there to check their valve clearances if they're due.

Hey sir.
So does corn gas cause the motor to run lean
Yes. If you run a higher ethenol
Content then the bike is tuned for it will run leaner

You for sure need to check the valves
No! Engine damage presents itself much more obvious then that
@@vcyclenut thanks
Good info 👍🏽

Yes the mt10 is an exception and is very lean when you swap out the exhaust

Thanks Dave, my FZ09 exhaust gets a lot of carbon build up. My exhaust valves are in spec. The bike runs like a scalded rabbit. Why all the carbon?
Carbon build up where?
