    I found it worth noting the vast majority of trees viewed in this video are actually in soil and promote air exchange by the roots at least to some degree. I don't think I saw *any* mature material permanently sitting in containers of this kind?
    I don't have an issue with promoting root growth in a water bubbler, but I have trouble seeing any of the demonstrated trees lasting long if the water is not actively oxygenated or at least switched out regularly, due to root rot. Additionally, as someone else has touched upon, the nutrient requirements (and indeed, even just the water) via roots would likely promote extensive algae growth, to where it'd be impractical to constantly clean out and put the root system back in.
    I guess where I'm left at this point is to ask what Mr. Nakajima's goals are with this endeavor? Is the goal 100% artistic or does he actually expect these trees to mature in this sort of form factor? And what happens if/when the tree and its roots exceed the space which these containers can provide? Removal looks like it would harm the tree.

      Some fair and good points made.
      That must be why "the exact process is a secret"
      But with my limited knowledge of bonsai, you should water them regularly so the exact same thing applies to these hydro Bonsai. Same for the roots growing bigger than the container, why would derooting be more of a Harm to a hydro tree than one in soil? Same process.
      The algea look like the true problem here, but that could be solved by changing the water (with added nutrients) regulary.

    • @jameswalker3416
      @jameswalker3416 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ChaosSebastian The real problem is that this isn't hydro. There is not enough oxygen in that water. You can search and u will never find a hydroponics system for sale that is just a bucket they will always have a big air stone or a sprayer or something to put more oxygen in the water. Ficus and willow are the only 2 trees I know that might live like this.

    • @ChaosSebastian

The roots are able to adapt to growing in water and they are different from roots grown in soil. The large one he did at first is an umbrella plant or schefflera. MOST tropical species but not all can grow hydroponic. The hard ones are conifers. The reason is actually not the water it's the microbes in soil. Deciduous conifers like bald cypress and dawn redwood can be grown in straight water though

    • @danielkosta3134

      Aldo Tocci where is this "gas exchange " ? There is no bubbler in those little vases. The trees need to be placed in sun and a nutrient solution in the sun quickly turns to algae. This may work for a temporary display but not long term.

    I think the blown glass looks great, but it would need a drain hole down low so as to flush algae . This may work for a little while for starting cuttings. Maybe even for short term displays. But there is no way that I would expect a tree to survive for long, unless it's a willow, or maybe a taxodium distichum ( bald cypress ). Really pretty, BUT kinda deadly for the tree.

    • @danielkosta3134
      @danielkosta3134 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree this looks like a short term thing. Maybe for a temporary display or maybe just to make this video. The trees would die if kept as he is showing.

    • @KeanuReevolution
      @KeanuReevolution ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need a drainage hole. The entire point of aquaponics is to let the water hold the nutrients. I'm sure the water is filtered as needed

    • @c.blakerockhart1128
      @c.blakerockhart1128 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KeanuReevolution The shape of the glass is going to promote root strangulation. And I do understand aquaponics and how the water is filtered and exchanged. However, in this video the containers do Not have a way to recycle the stagnant water. The only way to get fresh nutrients in, is to dump the old water out. Not to mention that the trees can't get a breath. Most trees will NOT live for long with their roots submerged.

    Im guessing these must have a steady supply of H2O2 for O2 and to resist algae growth. This technique might work ok for trees with fully established nebari. Have doubts that these trees would grow all that well after transplant or be very resistant to disease. Note that he only mists the tops; never top waters the canopy into the basin below to avoid upsetting the chemical concentration and introducing leaf-born pathogens..?
