You can pursue your degree in your own university and you can also follow one of the programs offered at the University of the People. It is really up to you. Shai Reshef's idea of spreading ultra-low cost model of higher education is really a great idea. I wish Governments all over the world should replicate this idea and educate their masses rapidly to ensure growth and progress. Born out of spreading free education, our own "Open School" also getting involved in this kind of mission. It is an excellent, disruptive idea and that should be laudable.

If you are a student, the government actually gives you money around $600 a month for free no strings attached if you are a student, so that effectively negates the tax cost for the person. I'm still incredibly happy to pay taxes in a country where they pay for everyone's university tuition instead of military campaigns on foreign soil.
Pakanahymni Even then you're still paying for the coming generations' education in taxes for the rest of your life. And even then, there is not as much of an incentive to increase quality if schools are going to get paid no matter what. And you guys are tax payers, are still overpaying since many top notch universities post their courses online for free, and you can pay a small fee for a certificate to get jobs. My friend got sought out from Google because he took Data Science classes from MIT on EdX, and he didn't even have a college degree.

What this man has done is amazing. University of the people caught my attention by an ad here on TH-cam, which showed Sita the man from Guinea who studies at the UoP. This is amazing what Shai Reshef has done. I only hope the the University of the People grows more and more and helps more people around the world.
Its 100$ per exam, 40 exams on a 4 year bachelor degree. In Germany you pay 0 - 280$ / semester if you study local (including elite universities) and around 2000$ for a complete regular distance study bachelor degree. So even a for-profit regular distance study program - for the bachelor in computer science for example - is possible for half the price of what they offer. If 4000$ for a bachelor in computer science is big news for US citizens, your hats would fly off if you'd see our health system.
Living in Germany but not having a C1 in the language, automatically kicks me out along with many immigrants who don’t click with such a hard and demanding idiom . So no, Germany privileges only Germans, or those highly skilled in said language. Nothing really to be proud of.
in germany you would pay something like 1200 to 1400 dollars ( approx. 1000 euros) for tuition and a degree if you want to apply at public University. the good thing in germany there are no bad universitys. all pretty much the same with little differences.

@@ubcroel4022 Since the university is accredited, the degree is worth as much as degrees from other accredited universities. Being tuition free doesn't mean the degrees are without value. For example, community colleges in California are free, but if the college is accredited, the degrees are also of value. I'm learning a lot, and I've already got my AA from a traditional US university. Comparing the two, University of the People is a great experience and a great option.
MarkNiceyard the cost is not all at once. It is 60 dollars for registration. It is 100 dollars every 9 weeks at the time of finals to cover cost. Yes there are scholarships available for the foundation courses. The foundation courses are the core curriculum.

no I actually really support the name. That's such an odd social stigma that the title of an institution should dictate the quality of their education. UoPeople sounds like something I would be proud to be part of and would represent where I come from. This is such a good idea. It transcends governments, politics, religions and cultures. It lets people learn and earn a degree regardless of socioeconomic status. It actually empowers people to build a career and a future for themselves. I think we need to expand this idea and the UoPeople. I heard enrollment is rising and they are developing an MBA program. Many US colleges talk about “going global” with their overseas study/travel package, but who can afford that. The UoPeople has been global since day one. Students don't just ride the bus past international landmarks, they interact with real people from around the world who are working to build a better future.
Yes everything you are talking about, I was and still am a part of this Global Village, opening the gates for higher education. I started to study with professors and we didn,t need books, we were connected with great people from all over the world. My experiences are with an other online university and I am looking forwards to this University to open this model and open through gates, we are building right now, offering a Syntony Model and framework. I am enrolled in my M.Ed currently. It is not easy work and requires commitment. It is a great course. I am improving my teaching ability and a range of other skills.
I’m a current UoPeople student in the MEd program. This is the most enriching program I have ever participated in and I’m not accumulating more student loan debt. It takes a lot of creativity in how I spend my time studying and working full time, but it’s a compromise I’m willing to make. I’m looking forward to graduating in 2021 and giving back as an alumnus.

Here there are no privileged ones. I am in my 5th term. By and large professors are very dedicated and the academic resources are great at cementing concepts and for comprehension of newly taught topics. Really really good! It's the best way for me to persuade my dream. University of People is still my future dream to earn my degree. I'm preparing myself especially my English. Once I'm ready I'll go for it. I used to fill up the application form, but I was asked to pay the registration fee $60, I do not have any English proficiency to proof my English. The only way to pay the registration fee first then take English class (provide by UoP) If I'm not wrong. Taking the English course I have to pay another $50 even I don't pass the exam. For this reason makes me worry to go for it or wait. But I decided to wait preparing myself first when I'm ready I'll jump into it. I believe UoP will still keep my account validation until I get back.

A degree at UoP doesn't open doors to a professional career at any of the competitive institutions, nor do the courses transfer to any reputable institution. The information gathered from the courses MAY or MAY NOT be useful. Also, your classmates won't be from the most competitive schools, either. Anyone who can read and write in English is admitted. So, how good is a degree from an "internet college" like U of P really worth???

In Nepal you can get four year college degree in Private Colleges at about the same cost. In state owned institution you can earn a 4 year degree in less than 500 dollars. This is still hard for most families to afford.

I tried attending UOP a couple of years ago, but I withdrew because I kept getting low grades on my assignments from my peers, however when I showed my work to professionals I know, they all thought my work should have gotten much higher grades. I feel like there are a lot of people reviewing assignments whose first language isn’t English, so they can’t properly review your work the way a native speaker might. It made the process extremely frustrating. I was extremely passionate about getting my education and worked very hard on my assignments, and for them to get such low grades from my peers was disappointing and really killed my morale.

Dear shai, I am very pleased to hear about the goal you were trying to achieve. i have nothing against this model but btw i did my bachelors in engineering from an elite institute in India for roughly 1500 dollars tution fee (its the entire 4 years). It graduated on 2010. Even now its less than what it would cost to do courses from your institute. Universities accredited to govt of india offer such correspondence courses for much less and on many different disciplines. How is it going to help people from developing countries. It is thrice as costly, u don't have personal connections to fellow students (Thats required for developing the skills required in a job). And lastly i want to know if the professors who provide courses at your institute are paid or they do it as a social cause.

i agree but you missed my point. The education may be cheaper in developed parts of the world but is almost inaccessible for people who actually need it. The pricing of the courses may be reconsidered and scaled to fit a countries need.
@@soumyasomu007 Congrats on getting your full-time degree. You've got a bright future ahead of you. Fair points made in terms of cost. As an Indian student, I've been paying the same fees for the past few years at UoPeople. Over two months of study that really amounts to $50 each. If you're paying the full fees. The university hasn't increased the fees by a cent. In my experience, the real issue is the weakness of the rupee against the dollar. I'm paying one and a half times the amount in Indian rupees now even though the price of each course remains exactly the same. I think most working adults here can easily afford Rs. 2000-3000 a month but when it starts rising above that value, cutting back becomes necessary. Realistically, I don't think the university can adjust for these altering exchange rate values as they have to pay their own bills as well. If they do, they'll have to keep dropping their fees based on the dollar-to-rupee exchange rate value. Which I think is asking for too much. Even then, I must point out that if you're having difficulties, they generally offer scholarships to students if you ask. I just received a third scholarship and must say that it's very possible for others to obtain one as well. It's true! Ultimately, I feel that comparing UoPeople to other universities purely based on cost does not do its cause justice. The Professors and the curriculum is more than decent. Still, very grateful for the assistance extended. Pleasantly surprised, so I'm leaving this "thank you" note here.
Here in mexico school is free or pretty cheap even a private catholic university it costs around 150 uds per month and you pay if off within 3 or 4 years

Well this is a no brained. I'm enrolling. Specifically because a Bachelors Degree is now the minimum education requirement to make a living wage. But also because I want to teach English abroad.

So inspiring, I just signed up for UoP yesterday when I saw their ad on insta. When I signed up it turned out that there was a $60 fee and they paid for my registration😭 not only that, They provide scholarship and I got that too. Each class has 30 students. It is amazing to discuss weekly with classmates who from Adghanistan, Sudan, Liberia, United States, Japan, and South Korea while studying from the Philippines.
$4,000 is still higher than the cost for college in the Philippines. In fact, $4,000 is the rate for private colleges and universities in the Philippines. Average people can barely afford it. Poor people from developing countries like the Philippines can't afford it for sure. This is definitely not "tuition free". The University of the People will only apply in richer countries. Why would they charge that much for the exams? I would appreciate it if someone will share to me another website that is more affordable than this. Thank you.

+Quron Jones different accrediting bodies. UOP is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. It could probably transfer to other DEAC schools. Those schools asked about are regional accreditation.
isa castellanos UC Berkeley accepts transfer credits too, but they mostly focus on California residents, and it's really expensive unless you have a scholarship.

This is such a good idea. It transcends governments, politics, religions and cultures. It lets people learn and earn a degree regardless of socioeconomic status. It actually empowers people to build a career and a future for themselves. I think we need to expand this idea and the UoPeople. I heard enrollment is rising and they are developing an MBA program. Many US colleges talk about “going global” with their overseas study/travel package, but who can afford that. The UoPeople has been global since day one. Students don't just ride the bus past international landmarks, they interact with real people from around the world who are working to build a better future.

Yes everything you are talking about, I was and still am a part of this Global Village, opening the gates for higher education. I started to study with professors and we didn,t need books, we were connected with great people from all over the world. My experiences are with an other online university and I am looking forwards to this University to open this model and open through gates, we are building right now, offering a Syntony Model and framework. how do you do your tests
I’m a current UoPeople student in the MEd program. This is the most enriching program I have ever participated in and I’m not accumulating more student loan debt. It takes a lot of creativity in how I spend my time studying and working full time, but it’s a compromise I’m willing to make. I’m looking forward to graduating in 2021 and giving back as an alumnus.

Hello World! I am a proud UoPeople student from Pakistan. I am very moved and inspired by the noble mission and objectives of founding this university which is open for everyone regardless of racial ethnic and similar criteria that occasionally seems a disgrace to humanity. Here there are no privileged ones. I am in my 5th term. By and large professors are very dedicated and the academic resources are great at cementing concepts and for comprehension of newly taught topics. The most amazing part is the entire community of UoPeople as it makes the learning. experience interesting due to people from varied backgrounds age and culture. Really really good! It's the best way for me to persuade my dream. University of People is still my future dream to earn my degree. I'm preparing myself especially my English. Once I'm ready I'll go for it.
I used to fill up the application form, but I was asked to pay the registration fee $60, I do not have any English proficiency to proof my English. The only way to pay the registration fee first then take English class (provide by UoP) If I'm not wrong. Taking the English course I have to pay another $50 even I don't pass the exam. For this reason makes me worry to go for it or wait. But I decided to wait preparing myself first when I'm ready I'll jump into it. I believe UoP will still keep my account validation until I get back.

A degree at UoP doesn't open doors to a professional career at any of the competitive institutions, nor do the courses transfer to any reputable institution. The information gathered from the courses MAY or MAY NOT be useful. Also, your classmates won't be from the most competitive schools, either. Anyone who can read and write in English is admitted. So, how good is a degree from an "internet college" like U of P really worth???

Questions for any UOP students or staff, is the bachelor degree from UOP internationally recognized? I am currently in New Zealand and are quite fascinated by this idea of affordable education in UOP.

In Nepal you can get four year college degree in Private Colleges at about the same cost. In state owned institution you can earn a 4 year degree in less than 500 dollars. This is still hard for most families to afford.

I tried attending UOP a couple of years ago, but I withdrew because I kept getting low grades on my assignments from my peers, however when I showed my work to professionals I know, they all thought my work should have gotten much higher grades. I feel like there are a lot of people reviewing assignments whose first language isn’t English, so they can’t properly review your work the way a native speaker might. It made the process extremely frustrating. I was extremely passionate about getting my education and worked very hard on my assignments, and for them to get such low grades from my peers was disappointing and really killed my morale.
Agree completely! They need to get rid of grading by peers if they are charging anything. This is what will make me quit as well.

i have nothing against this model but btw i did my bachelors in engineering from an elite institute in India for roughly 1500 dollars tution fee (its the entire 4 years). It graduated on 2010. Even now its less than what it would cost to do courses from your institute.
Universities accredited to govt of india offer such correspondence courses for much less and on many different disciplines.
How is it going to help people from developing countries. It is thrice as costly, u don't have personal connections to fellow students (Thats required for developing the skills required in a job).
And lastly i want to know if the professors who provide courses at your institute are paid or they do it as a social cause.

i agree but you missed my point. The education may be cheaper in developed parts of the world but is almost inaccessible for people who actually need it. The pricing of the courses may be reconsidered and scaled to fit a countries need.

@@soumyasomu007 Congrats on getting your full-time degree. You've got a bright future ahead of you. Fair points made in terms of cost. As an Indian student, I've been paying the same fees for the past few years at UoPeople. Over two months of study that really amounts to $50 each. If you're paying the full fees. The university hasn't increased the fees by a cent. In my experience, the real issue is the weakness of the rupee against the dollar. I'm paying one and a half times the amount in Indian rupees now even though the price of each course remains exactly the same. I think most working adults here can easily afford Rs. 2000-3000 a month but when it starts rising above that value, cutting back becomes necessary. Realistically, I don't think the university can adjust for these altering exchange rate values as they have to pay their own bills as well. If they do, they'll have to keep dropping their fees based on the dollar-to-rupee exchange rate value. Which I think is asking for too much. Even then, I must point out that if you're having difficulties, they generally offer scholarships to students if you ask. I just received a third scholarship and must say that it's very possible for others to obtain one as well. It's true! Ultimately, I feel that comparing UoPeople to other universities purely based on cost does not do its cause justice. The Professors and the curriculum is more than decent. Still, very grateful for the assistance extended. Pleasantly surprised, so I'm leaving this "thank you" note here.
Here in mexico school is free or pretty cheap even a private catholic university it costs around 150 uds per month and you pay if off within 3 or 4 years

So inspiring, I just signed up for UoP yesterday when I saw their ad on insta. When I signed up it turned out that there was a $60 fee and they paid for my registration😭 not only that, They provide scholarship and I got that too. Each class has 30 students. It is amazing to discuss weekly with classmates who from Adghanistan, Sudan, Liberia, United States, Japan, and South Korea while studying from the Philippines.

$4,000 is still higher than the cost for college in the Philippines. In fact, $4,000 is the rate for private colleges and universities in the Philippines. Average people can barely afford it. Poor people from developing countries like the Philippines can't afford it for sure. This is definitely not "tuition free". The University of the People will only apply in richer countries. Why would they charge that much for the exams? I would appreciate it if someone will share to me another website that is more affordable than this. Thank you.

WGU is a good school and the student has control over how much their degree cost. I got a MS at WGU. It is also regionally accredited and non-profit.

its a good chance for people from developing countries but i dont believe it could replace face-to-face education. The best way to make education affordable for all people is to make it free. In many european countries its already free but US (and many more developed countries) wants to make money even on its own citizens' education

+Quron Jones different accrediting bodies. UOP is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. It could probably transfer to other DEAC schools. Those schools asked about are regional accreditation.

isa castellanos UC Berkeley accepts transfer credits too, but they mostly focus on California residents, and it's really expensive unless you have a scholarship.
