SALES PITCH
You can grow an entire garden in a very small space! The unique stacking design allows you to grow approximately 8 times more plants per square foot than a conventional garden. The Plant Pyramid is a versatile planter that can be used for vegetables, herbs or flowers or any combination of the three. The stacked beds allow root systems to take advantage of a large soil volume and promote more vigorous plant growth. By raising the garden beds off the ground, they are easy to reach for planting, tending and harvesting and at a height that’s pleasing to the eye and sure to catch the attention of your neighbors and friends.
First step to building our planter pyramids is to cut that 65-degree angle for that 2x4 structure. I am going to use my circular saw since I cannot achieve those angles on the miter saw without building a jig. And, since these pieces are quite hefty, I care to manage and try to get all that with the miter saw with the board sticking out at a weird angle.
All you are going to do is set that pivot to be four or five inches down from the top of your board. This is because the circular saws base is an inch and a half from its actual blade. So, by only measuring down an inch and a half, you get one of these little numbers where it doesn’t give me a perfect peak. So, I’m going to go down two or three inches, and solves that problem completely.
Rotating on that pivot point, set the bottom degree to sixty-five. If you guys are unfamiliar with speed squares, just know that the pivot and your degree marking sill be on the same side of the board. So, once you guys have that lined out, all you will do is draw your line. And then you guys can cut the line however you feel comfortable. I actually just use my speed square and clamp it down onto my workpiece and use that as a temporary fence for my circular saw.
Measure down three feet from the top peak and make a mark. 90 minus 65 is 25. So 25 degrees will be our bottom cut, and I just do this at the miter saw. And now we have made one of our uprights, so we just need three more.
To make our pyramids look, better than that, we need to rip a squared piece for the center for all of those 2x4's to rest up against. So on the table saw were just going to take one of those scrap pieces of wood and rip a 1-1/2 by 1-1/2 inch square.
Our inside angle measurement comes out to 8-1/4. So, at the miter saw cut down that square piece we had just ripped on the table saw.
Since I have a 2-1/2 inch screw, if i pilot my hole about 3-1/2 inches down, I get a good amount of meat into this center board. So, that is what I am going to do first. Now we are just going to screw everything together. I am using a titebond three, it is the only exterior waterproof glue they make. Titebond two or original is not ready for outdoor use.
Then just line your piece up for the top corners. Make sure your thumb is close enough so that when you are driving this screw in, it can skip off and ram into your thumb. Its the best part of my day.

And there’s our pyramid, minus the bottom
To achieve this cross over base, i first measure my pyramid to figure out the two lengths that will be needed. Both of mine come out to 32 inches on the dot. Cut two pieces of 2x4 to that measurement. I did go ahead and dog-ear the corners just to make them more ascetic on the bottom so they weren’t so blocky.
In order to lay the two pieces like this so that they are flush together we need to be removing some material from this piece and material from this piece. So half of the top, half of the bottom. That is a half-lap joint. So, to do that I first found the center of my board which was 16 inches. And then I measured over 1-3/4's on both sides. I did that because my board was 3-1/2" that divided by two: 1-3/4. So then with our two pieces lined up, you just make those marks on your board. And then head over to the miter saw.
Your miter saw has a depth control. And if you throttle that down, it won’t allow your blade to go all the way through your piece. So we need to line it up to go half through our 2x4, and to do that I generally take it down a little bit, make a pass and tweak it as I go to get that perfect cut.

Those look so cool. Did you see the one that looks like an Aztec pyramid? I bet it would look awesome if you made it look like a Japanese Shinto Temple. I have no idea how to do that though.
Maybe I'm missing something but the bottom of the upper levels can't be any higher than the top edge of the level below or the dirt is going to fall out. Have you put any dirt in your design?
They aren’t being filled with water. It’s dirt. It’s not going anywhere
So you have to fill the entire center with dirt to get it up to the upper levels. Seems like you need 4-6 times more dirt than if each level had a pan/bottom.
And even with minimal rain/watering that dirt is going to eventually be moved out of the planter. It might take a while, but water will eat away “erode” entire mountains.
The problem with yours is that the steps are spaced out too much. The bottom of the next level is not supposed to be higher than the top of the previous level. Spaced like you have them and dirt will flow out of the upper levels.

Judging by marketplace the planter market is crowded. I have about 10 orders from friends and family and I have some ideas for customization. I love this idea for strawberries in my own garden

Look around for a cedar picket for fences, that sounds like a regular cedar board, and those are cashyyyyyy

9:25 that's why I use the same machinist scales that I use at work. They aren't cheap, but Starrett scales are good enough to be called unnecessarily precise for woodwork.

Yeah, ive seen them where they use boards underneath so it can be filled and put on a patio, these are more-or-less to put in a garden and fill the center with dirt :)
Need your advise please my mitre saw doesn't stay on 40 or 41 degrees...I've made the triangle hate lol but having a lot of trouble achieving the bevel.and advise very much appreciated
Liiiike the miter saw doesn't have a lock to keep it at 41°? If your circular saw has an angle setting, you can achieve the shelf cuts using the same method you cut the sharp angle for the hat :)
FYI there are different types of pressure treated wood the one your talking about is CCA treated, for that type ou wood you need stainless screws. The other is ACQ witch is environmentally friendly, there are more but the acq is in the lumber stores, CCA is special order

I love the video! Can you tell me how you arrived at the angles for the miter saw on the skirting? Was it trial and error, did you have some help from design software?
Ohhh, it was me taking random guesses on scrap cedar :P lol, all the random angle cuts next to the tiny box were my trail and errors :) lol

Also I have a problem finding wood that is straight and it essential when miter cut are involved. I have a planer but it won’t work right if at least one of the sides is flat. It s struggle at times. How did you get cedar for that cheap!!😮
You can build this with curved/warped boards since you are cutting the pieces quite small, this is built from standard 2x4 and 2x6 pine lumber ;)

I googled Mexican hat stand, and I am not disappointed 🤣🤣 it totally could!
Instead of using the tape put a couple a finish nails in your pieces with your nailer and that will hold the two pieces together while you screw them up

I am thinking of lining each layer with landscape cloth. Staple the cloth and then remove it at the end of each season. Or use the mossy wire basket liner nurseries use.

ok i think i figured the dirt (falling out) thing, he says these are made for the yard not deck (i didnt know what that meant) when he says they are meant for the yard he means they are meant to be loaded to the gills with dirt (i think) so the dirt on the bottom slopes up till it reaches next level creating a bottom. i still think its gonna have issues cause the slope will eventually level out with rain, i think, im not really a landscape engineer, maybe the roots hold it together? none the less i still like this guys videos.
You can put a solid board in the bottom so it can be placed on a deck, but yes, these are made to go in the garden :)

I did not, I find it makes a huge mess and can be seen when I apply a deck-grade sealant. Three screws should be plenty in each corner

I'm definitely building this! But I would love to build a taller version. Advice for figuring out the angles with a similar footprint, but twice as tall? Like 6'-8' tall?Would they be the same angles, but with longer boards? Surely not. I'm a novice woodworker. Looking to learn!
Id increase the angle to like 75°-80°. Then, instead of starting your shelves at 25", start at whatever your side length is. If you deduct in equal numbers (subtracting lets say 8" each time) your shelves will be equally spaced. :) good luck!!

I just thought of another question, If I keep the base the same size, do the bevels at the corners of each level change? Does adding length to the standing beams and changing the angle at the top change the bevels on the corners?
Changing the angle at the top will change your angle at the bottom. (90 minus your top angle = bottom angle) then measure the distance from leg-to-leg at the bottom to get the base length. The shelves angles will all stay the same

Loving your videos. But I noticed that you say Titebond 3 is the only exterior glue. That is what I thought too until someone corrected me. Titebond 3 is for exterior and is listed as “WATERPROOF”
Titebond 2 is also for exterior and is listed as “WEATHERPROOF”
The way it was explained to me was the only really difference is Titebond 2 dries quicker. Just thought wild let you know. I now use Titebond 2 for almost everything.

The spacing keeps the shelves slightly apart, the dirt rests at an angle and doesnt fall out

Its meant to be placed ontop of the ground and filled with dirt. Really any plant would strive in it, and the roots can still pull nutrients from the ground :)
I like your videos. You have a good voice for singing, and when you do it sounds great. Really great. Do you know any music that doesn't sound like it came from a musical though? Maybe some Seether or Red Hot Chili Peppers? I'm not sure if you're trying to be funny or serious. You don't edit out all your oversights or mistakes, and it makes woodcrafting seem more realistic. Congratulations on the growth of your channel over the last year dude. I think you'll grow big. Could you show us some other smaller items you've sold? I know you say that you can't compete with big box stores on price, but they sell planters for a hundred bucks. Seems like you're already competing on price with them. I saw Matthew Peech make some little decorative doo-dads with picket fence and shelving wood that seems to do well for him. Do you do anything like that? It would make for a great show n tell. Keep doing your thing though man. You're a cool guy Voss.
Ive heard some bad things about some of Matts builds; since they are gutted so cheap to build the final product is also "cheap" like the snowflakes he had. I just like rock music a lot, and it sounds like you're singing songs from Disney films (I think). There's something kinda surreal and humorous about seeing a woodcrafter in his shop singing a Disney musical type of song lol. But anyways, how do you find ideas for potential big sellers?

I leave it to the customer, upcharge if Im sealing it with a water seal since not every customer understands why the box costs more when I water seal beforehand :) painting is 100% up to them, it eats a lot of time
How much dirt would one say is required to fill this? HD has 1 cu. ft. bags for $3.27
Ive got a cubic dirt calculator, but that would be tricky to put in. I can't honestly say how much it takes, my wife says ours took 4 bags (which I think were 2cbft)

Dirt from lower level holds dirt from next level up in place. With it un-stacked and just the bottom shelf on, fill bottom with dirt then put next level on top of it and repeat, then repeat again.

Mine are downloading the correct size. Maybe it's a printing issue? I have to set my page setup to "fit" instead of "full" to print these. The image size is for a regular sheet of paper though :) good luck :)

I use pine for these, and give it a nice coat of deck stain. I dont like the look of pressure treated lumber and it drys out and will crack/warp

Why not lower the cost of building this by using cedar pickets? Great looking Planter tho.
Cedar boards are very porous, and gluing the thinner compound-mitered end grains would likely fail in the first season due to the large amount of dirt the shelves hold. 2x6's are only $4.68 vs the $3.28 picket so i opted for those to add longevity :)

My uncle passed away just after Xmas and left me all of his woodworking gear because no one else in the family was interested in them. Once I can clean/service all the machines and tools I'll definitely be making some of these planters for my mum. She's a total green thumb.

I guess I am missing something here.. I see where you could fill the bottom with dirt to grow, but what are the other two levels for? There is no where to plant. It looks cool and all, but I don't see how you grow "8 X the plants"

At 9:21 you say it's going to be an 18" shelf, but you don't use the first inch on your tape measure.. you go to 19" on your tape measure.... in your drawings it says 19" length..... so shouldn't you have gone to 20" on your tape??? is it an 18" cut or 19" cut?? lol
Lolol, so I had this doodle on my dry erase board for measurements for the first 10 builds, then, I erased them and had to print the plans for another order. This is why they weren't spaced right! 😂 Its 18" buddy :)

lol im not sure how many of your viewers actually built the planter design but your calculation for the required lumber is incorrect. You need (3) 2x4x8 and only (3) 2x6x8 not (4) pieces. I got a extra piece of 2x6 i guess ill use for a second planter haha
