4:42 and thats how concerts were back in the day. Its not just for show or shock value, thats how your Mom/Grandma used to be. Concerts in the 80's/90's were on another level. All these videos you see of beautiful big haired girls are not just videos, thats how it was, and it was magical!

I am SO GLAD I grew up in the 80's... went from 14 in 1980 to 24 in 1990 the absolute best years musically and in reality to grow up in. Concerts were SO DIFFFERENT back then... they all felt and were "more intimate" even if they were like Monsters of Rock I where there were 100K people...
This song captures everything I love about this kind of music…lyrics, heart, humor (at the start) and powerful performances. So glad someone as young as you can appreciate this❤️
Well I mean young people should understand it considering young people made it, Im pretty sure Tommy was 17 on his world tour its insane. Im 26 and never not loved bands like this.

This song holds a special place in my heart. In 1986, I was a 18 year old kid in advanced training in the Army. First time away from home, feeling lost and confused, and this song got me through to the end of it all. I wore out a cassette of this song in 6 months.
Crue was so high energy in the 80's !! i listened to this song on my way home from the MARINES
Fun fact, Tommy had his drum riser made to tilt forward towards "almost 90deg" so the crowd could look 'down from above' during his drum solo You can see it here at 2:02 . Their tour for the following album, he had a hydraulic cage built so they could spin him around/upside down during his solo. You can see a small snippet of that in their Wild Side video (which I highly recommend).
This is the song that shot them into the stratosphere. Their antics are legendary and basically what the "rockstar/badboy" image amplified for the 80s. As someone who grew up to this, hearing it called classic rock always makes me feel old, but it is nowadays. They were Heavy Metal/Hard Rock...nowadays Glam/Hair metal would be the category. If you want more: "Too Young To Fall in Love" and "Looks That Kill", both from the previous album. "Wild Side" and "Girls, Girls, Girls", both from the following album, "Dr. Feelgood" from the album after that.
Also...that's a Mighty Mouse plushie...I believe he has a tat of Mighty Mouse as well.

This song is very special to me -- when this came out in 85, my 3 buddies (John, Joe & Jerry) & I BLARED it on a ‘boom box’ walking home from the movie theater to Jerrys house - about 10 miles away at 2am and we’re all singing badly & real loud to the song & we kept putting the song on repeat… we must’ve heard it like 20 times in a row 😂
In 87, Jerry was murdered so everytime we heard the song (and still do), it reminds me of Jerry…. scary thing is, EVERY SINGLE TIME we went to visit Jerry’s grave, somehow, someway, even if we listened to the radio, this song will start playing once we got near the cemetary… we took it as Jerry was saying “hello boys”…

This was the first true power ballad
When I saw them live, the drummer started the song on the piano, and thee ran up the cage they had around the drums, flipped over the top, and started playing the drums. AWESOME concert! This is also the song that they sang at the end of each concert on their farewell tour.
Motley Crue broke new ground w/ 'Home sweet home' in 1985... it was one of the early 80's 'power ballads'... They were in a bit of turmoil when writing and recording their 3rd album 'Theater of Pain'... Vince Neil went to jail after his friend was killed in a car crash in which he was driving intoxicated... The drugs + alcohol were getting worse and bassist Nikki Sixx was now shooting he+++n... Motley felt that the songs on the record were not the best, so Tommy Lee (drums) came up w/ the piano intro and Nikki Sixx wrote the rest of the song and lyrics that became 'Home sweet home'...
Back in 1983, rock and metal bands were not encouraged to make slow ballads cos their record labels felt it would alienate their hardcore fanbase and lose record sales... (Queen went pop in 1981 w/ 'Hot space' and their career never recovered in N. America).
But in 1984, L.A. rockers Dokken put a power ballad 'Alone again' on their 2nd album 'Tooth and nail'... and it became a successful MTV single... Def Leppard had a hit single "Bringin' on the heartbreak" in 1981 which was a ballad... and Scorpions had a few hit ballads already ('Holiday' ... "Still lovin' you" ... 'When the smoke is going down'...)
But other bands like Ratt, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio, etc. declined to go that route musically... Motley Crue also declined to record any slow tracks on their 1st two records, but they decided to go for it on the 3rd album and it blew the doors open for the power ballad single to bring in the women rockers and boost record sales for hard rock & metal bands ... 'Theater of Pain' sold 4x platinum in the US.
Bands like Journey scored massive hits w/ ballads ('Lights' ... 'Faithfully') ... Boston had a hit w/ 'Amanda' in 1986... Bon Jovi scored a major ballad hit in '86 - 'Wanted dead or alive'... Whitesnake had the hit - 'Is this love' in 1987... Europe had the hit ballad 'Carrie' in 1986... Great White had the hit ballad 'Save your love' in 1987... The rock ballad single gave the record labels a way to reach a female audience and by 1989, every major rock band had a power ballad (or 2) on a record that helped them sell platinum.
In 1990, rockers Tesla released a live acoustic album '5 man acoustic jam' and it went platinum... so, the idea came to MTV to do 'MTV Unplugged' shows and invited rock bands to perform acoustically... That also became a successful format to sell records... Bands like Aerosmith, Ratt, Pearl Jam, Queensryche... all signed up to do 'MTV Unplugged' in the early 90's.
The problem by 1990 was that power ballads were saturating the airplay for rock and metal... The newer bands were getting softer and more commercial... Bands like Firehouse scored a pop single 'Love of a lifetime' ... Slaughter had 'Fly to the Angels' ... Enuff Z'Nuff had 'Fly high Michelle' ... Queensryche had a huge hit w/ 'Silent lucidity'... and then 'Anybody listening?' ... Red Hot Chili Peppers had 'Under the bridge'...etc.
There was an impetus for rock and metal bands to get heavier and harder again in the early 90's to get away from the 'dopey ballads'... Metallica had a huge record in 1991... Pantera was coming up fast... so was Alice In Chains...
The power ballad format became a liability.
Suddenly, Nirvana broke big in 1991 w/ a heavier sound and a major rock single 'Smells like teen spirit'... this was something new and fresh, and by 1992, they made the 80's rockers look outdated overnight... Despite hard rock bands like Scorpions, Warrant, L.A. Guns, Tesla, Slaughter, Saigon Kick, etc. releasing some of their best music in the early 90's, they were quickly kicked to the curb by the music industry, radio and MTV... and replaced by newer bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.
1983-1984 was their first world tour "Shout at the Devil" They opened up for Ozzy Osbourne & were gone for 18 months. Back then no one partied harder than Ozzy, By the time the tour was over Motley Crue were partied out, exhausted,& were ready to come home, That's the story behind this song. The drummer Tommy Lee was a fan of a old carttoon "Mighty Mouse" That's what was on his drums
Ah yes, the song/video that broke MTV lol. This video was so popular, it stayed #1 way past expectations and MTV changed their rules to remove it so other, newer content could
get a shot at most requested. I consider the opening/closing piano refrain some of the most beautifully ever done. Bittersweet, like recalling fond memories, touched by the sadness
when you know that's all they are now... memories.
Yet another great reaction. I am going to show my age here, but MC is one of my favorite bands. My first really heavy concert was Motley Crue opening for Ozzy at Reunion Arena (the outside view of the arena at the beginning is Reunion Arena in Dallas) I did not miss a single Crue concert all the way through their Dr. Feelgood album. That was when concerts were affordable. This is the ballad that really got them mainstream attention. For more heavy, go with Wild Side, Kickstart my Heart or Girls Girls Girls, (make sure you react to the censored version though). Keep up the excellent reactions and have a wonderful day.
the video for Wild Side is still my favorite Crue video of all time. when Tommy Lee and his kit are elevated and sent out over the crowd and starts to spin...epic.
They wrote this song in 15 minutes. A magical moment that all musicians know about. You can write an album for a year, but accidentally strike a chord or say something and it turns out to be a super hit.

Everyone is filled with a kind of euphoria that lasts all night. This is some kind of magic, it cannot be expressed in words. And realistically, you can sit with a guitar for an hour and play nonsense. But in such moments you can just strike a chord and something cool will happen.
And even the audience feels it. The energy you put into writing. Your condition.
That’s why I love Zepplins, although the music is specific. You are overwhelmed by the energy of the drugs and the state of the musicians who wrote it.
I think the state stays in the song forever. That’s why you like one song, even if it’s simple, while another is commercial. Correct, but soulless

Fun fact, the last poster that Vince kisses as he walks through the bus, I actually still have and have had since I was probably 16, that's before this video even came out.
This was the song that started the "power ballad" craze the every other band started to copy. Mtv had implement the "crue" rule stating no song could be the most requested for like longer than 30 days or something like that. Home sweet home was played around the clock for months on end being the most requested.
That was Mighty Mouse on Tommy's drums.

My kids got me tickets to the Farewell tour a few years ago. We had seats on the floor, and right in front of the smaller stage... and it was pretty epic. they all turned up on that stage and sang an almost acoustic version of this song. I wasn't old enough to really be into Motley Crue in the early 80's but, they were my sister's favorite band back then, so they just felt like my childhood. Glad you are liking the classics!

It has a nostalgic vibe, ironically, since this was many people's introduction to the band. Although it wasn't technically a hit on the charts, the video was #1 on 1-800--Dial-MTV (a Mon-Fri viewer call-in-to-vote tv show for 3 months straight. We didn't have the internet back then and every home still had a landline telephone. Music videos on the increasingly popular MTV had become a standard marketing tool. This song and its video were the blueprint for what became known as the "power ballad," which every rock band from then on had to have at least one of these style songs on their album.

Most Veterans returning from overseas listen to this over and over at the first hint of returning to the US.
I believe these were all shots taken from the Theater of Pain tour in.....'84 I think. I didn't get to see them until the Dr. Feelgood tour in '89. They were still on top of the world. It was right before the fall.
I also love Vince Neil's voice. Just like I love Axl Rose's voice in Guns N Roses. Both very unique, shrill sounding yet powerful. A major reason why they are my two favorite bands.
i got to see this live and it was the most magical concert experience I've ever had. Tommy came out, played one note on the piano and we the crowd sang the entire song w/o the band even being on stage from start to finish then they came out and did the whole song basically a 2nd time. it was wild.

I saw them first when I was 13 yrs old on a weird channel not mtv....and not having cable back in the late 80s early 90s...I watched thos video DR FEELGOOD with so much curiosity and back in those days if you didnt have MTV playing in your house, ypu missed out on alpt pf music...and it changed my taste in music...i was hooked on hair metal bands from that moment on. Thank you Motley Crew for being so awesome

if you want to get into more power ballads, I'd highly recommend I Saw Red by Warrant and Every Rose Has Its Thorn by Poison. one of my favs is also Skid Row's I Will Remeber You. Somewhere in the 80's it became a "thing" that all metal bands had to have a ballad on their albums. some really hardcore rockers hated that, but as a musician I loved it. I think some of the 80's metal power ballads were some of the best things to come out of that era of music. up to and including Metallica with Nothing Else Matters.

This is definitely "80's Power Ballad". Crue has a bunch of other more rocking songs, but I would never consider them metal. They were glam rock through and through, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that! Vince could sing, and the rest of the boys could rock, and it was very, very 80's! If you lived through the era, you understand - it was a one-of-a-kind experience growing up then! And I'll love this song forever!

I didn't get into them as much a sother friends. They were all about the Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll more than the music, and nothing wrong with that. Catch their documentary The Dirt, it sums up their existence.
Fun fact Mötley was the first band to use backstage footage in their video. Mötley is considered glam rock or hair metal.
