First time seeing the channel, long time whiskey drinker. So I think at least 3 of the 5 bottles are NDP sourced whiskeys. Most of these are trading off their reputations and likely won’t be around in a few years. There’s only so many ways you can spin 4-6 year mgp juice. For Four Gate, the whiskey tubers will need to be impressed with these because at the $200+ price point, most buyers would be very hesitant to pull the trigger given it sounds like the quality is starting to lack. Same boat that Bookers bourbon is in. Great video!!

I'm rolling my eyes with Barrel, Penelope and Bardstown. How many damn bourbons y'all gonna push out?? Perfect a small amount first. I think the next thing will be roasted cherry Barrel, aged at 2 years and 1 month , then sunk below sea level where mermaids lightly move diamond staves to a sea salt finish. Gimme a break

Actually at my local Total Wine Nulu got a big dose of humble pie. They had prominent shelf placing and were selling for $90-$100 each for the special finishes, etc. Nobody was buying at all. They dropped them to $77 and they’re still sitting there.

I've run into that when a craft distiller goes from their (usually MGP) sourced juice to the juice they have been making. Same bottle. Very different profile and usually the MGP was better.

Willet 4 year makes amazing… AMAZING old fashioneds. It’s so magical. It’s 75% rye in the mash bill and I learned the really good ones are over 110 proof. So if you see 114 or above always a banger.
Also, it’s the only rye I like which turns really sweet when you add water.
I never drink this one neat. Just dump a bunch of ice in a coffee mug and let it turn sweet and dilly. I do love the dill note and get super disappointed when it’s not there or not as prevalent.
But yes, overall their quality has gone done in the last 4-5 years.
I stopped buying 1920 new label, on my 3rd willet bottle in 4 years and probably won’t buy another for a while. I stopped buying regular WT 101, (the 70th anniversary was amazing) I stopped buying whistle pig anything, I stopped buying ECBPs, I stopped buying buffalo trace, I stopped buying eh Taylor small batch, I stopped buying anything MGP sourced. I’m done.
For that money I just get a nice bottle of peated scotch instead.

It's videos like these that I'm thankful for when finding who to continue watching or discovering who to avoid watching. David has the opposite palate for whiskey than what I enjoy, as Penelope 4 grain barrel strength and Nulu double oak are among my favorites. Perhaps he has some "bad" bottles, or perhaps I am lucky and find "good" bottles, but I enjoy the delicious sweet oak, subtle leather, and caramel notes from Nulu double oak. I agree about the pricing though. Penelope 4 grain barrel strength is surprisingly delicate for the proof and a super easy sipper. In a previous video David (to my amazement) likes Heaven Hill grain to glass rye which is unimpressive at best even if it were half the price, while about a month ago, didn't like my favorite double oak bourbon (Peerless). Iguess I will agree to disagree. I've seen about 30 or so videos and I'm seeing he is starting to drift away from whiskey videos and doing odd EDC and "how to be a real man type of bravado, insecurity lure type videos. It is what it is I guess.
Good luck to you in the future David.

I think a good general rule is finding a pallet and recommendation that matches your own to be able to explore new labels. I have a nulu btl and it is a single barrel pick from the boys over at Bourbon Pursuit. This is a bottle we can get behind and enjoy, also it’s a toasted barrel to keep in mind, which often from certain brand releases can create lots of variance. Some may like them some may not; just because you liked one batch doesn’t mean you like another

The Nulu Toasted Small Batch is delicious. For $85 I think the value is there. I like it as much or better than my Old Forester SBBS picks at the same price. However, the ECBP Toasted picks outshine the Nulu Toasted, but those come in at $100 in my area.

I heard so much good stuff about the michters toasted. I got the 2023 sour mash, super flat, muted, and thin. Then i got the 2024 toasted barrel proof rye, again, super muted, thin, and flat. I paid 100 for the toasted sour mash. 125 or 130 for the toasted barrel proof rye. Not impressed, at all!! Ive had maybe 2 pours from each bottle that had some decent flavors. Like the marshmellow note. But most of the time i go into it, its so muted and lacking complexity.
I have a nulu wheated toasted pick that is absolutely phenomenal!!

i'm surprised with the willet rye, i have 2. and yes, they are single barrels, but my first one is ever so slight oak, vanilla, and a hint of spice, idk if i just got an older one, or if it's the barrel or what, but the one i have is fantastic and one of my personal favorite rye whiskeys i own. i also got it for 60 bucks, which, with the notes you have, not worth 60 lol. i hope my backup is just as good as my first one. time will tell.
the nulu, i have a double oaked, paid 100 for it i think, and it's fantastic. it's a caramel bomb, though, to be fair, it is a store pick so it could very well be that i got a good bottle, and others arent worth it. assuming i got the exact same juice, i'd rebuy my nulu DO no doubt.
the other 3, i havent ever tried, so i'll be sure to try before i buy any of them.

Agreed. I won’t buy at 80 90, but saw one for 65-70 and grabbed it.

I like Nulu. I have a double oak pick from a local place as well as a local pick for the toasted. I bought both for 60-70 and didn’t feel ripped off. I would recommend it at that price. Definitely not worth more and I constantly see them on “sale” at TW for those prices discounted from 100-110.
The Michters toasted bourbon I liked, was kind of dissapointed because for 120 I thought it would be better, the nose is better than the palette.
I agree with the willet rye when you clearly can buy a barrel proof JD that’s much better in quality.

I was on the Nulu Hype train when I bought a toasted barrel for $69.....(mainly because the EC Toasted Barrels I could only find for $99). Then I saw that the Nulu toasted finishing lasted 1-4 weeks.....weeks....not months. Almost a drive by toasting.....no time in the barrel. The next bottle of Nulu toasted i saw was $100+. It was a huge turnoff to the brand, and frankly I dont think I've watched more than a few reviews of their products. Their prices are a turnoff for me.....Not an "A" level NDP as far as I am concerned, not worthy of the prices they are asking. Hell, I can find KC12 for $70....wtf
Given the state of the market, I can't see why any DSP, NDP, blender, etc would even chance raising prices, its absolutely the wrong time and place for it. Cheers on the other "no mas" bottles, I appreciate you saying "enough is enough". I walked by a Four Gate sitting on the shelf for months and months only because it was $200 and I couldn't bring myself to part with that kind of monay! Cheers!!

I am in no way defending Nulu, but I have recently been enlightened with the information that there are other brands besides Nulu that will only age their whiskies in a second barrel for a few weeks. Justr tried the 1897, 1910, 1920 from OF. They were awful! The 1897 was just OK. Is OF getting that much worse, since a lot of people used to rave about them?

      1920 definitely got worse.

@connieharris6553 I'm wondering if I just bought a bad set? 1910 was the worst followed by 1920 and then 1897. They were very ethanol forward, they seemed very young and the 1910 had a nail polish remover element to it.

1910 is still solid. 1920 changed. Isn’t as good, but certainly not terrible. But again, all of this is subjective. Everyone is different

@@RVWhiskey 1910 is now better but for the money, I like the 100 proof OF bourbon and rye…can’t beat $25

Can’t do any toasted, too much of a hit or miss factor

Again your palate but I don’t buy anything over 100 so a couple of these I’d never get. Personally I’m a fan of Penelope but like I said it’s a palate thing.🥃🥃🥃

Why and when did you change your name from whiskey row to just "the row"?

Thanks for proving again that price does not always mean good whiskey. There are plenty of good bottles for $50-$60 or less.

I still enjoy the Michters toasted Rye. But I wouldn't pay what is costs. NULU is so over priced.

Willett Rye is amazing. Michters is over priced. Penelope's line up is not outstanding, but at a lower price it would be fine.
