I'm probably picking it up soon in my Kykar deck - being paired with Acidic Soil for burn (deals damage to each player based on the number of lands that player controls)
Mystic Remora in Moldrotha decks....... *shiver* They can choose NOT to pay, and then just play it for 1 on their Main phase every single one of their turns....
IMHO, one of the best replacements for Rhystic Study is Verity Circle. Whenever someone taps a dork for mana, or activates their commander's abilities, you can draw a card. You can also tap creatures with its second ability (which is also allowing you to draw a card), which can be super relevant in situations where someone might attack for lethal. Great card and super cheap right now.
2 things: 1. You're the Golden Pig of commander youtube channels. 2. you should add pins to your merchandise store, they would be awesome! maybe the channel icon, the golden pig symbol, and maybe one for each color of mana?
While it doesn't exile, Generous Gift is still a truly fantastic addition to white's removal repetoire. It along with Swords is an automatic include in all decks of mine that have white.
For the love of Hazoret buy winds of abandon. it's close to mono white cyclonic rift from a premium price set, please pick it up while it's still around $1
i mean it is so much worse than c rift, but for being white instead of blue it is really good... the second winds of abandon would have been an instant it would be only worse than crift (not hitting non creatures, ramping your opponents), but yeah you are right it might be a very reasonable white staple. especially for boros hatebears... stranglehold and cat jesus say hi :D
@@ZerkMonsterHunter i mean... yes, but that doesn't make it better, that is along the lines of a "i can put it on a iso scepter and then it is good" argument. I like it, but let's not kid ourself, it is heaps away from being a C rift.
I feel like its being undervalued too. Sure, it isn't always ideal to ramp people, but sometimes you need the flexibility to take out a threat or one sided board wipe.
The reason i love this series is becouse it includes cards that are known but still cheap becouse they have been reprinted. This makes me know of cards i didn't k ow but should know to play or recognise when i see them.
Glad you mentioned dispatch. I recommended it to a guy in my playgroup but he brushed it off like it didn't even exist cause of the "downside" PS he has a breya deck :/
Tutors never feel good after using a Demonic tutor but I've always been curious why more attention isnt put on to Night Dealings. The investment is higher, you pay a Diabolic Tutor to put it into play and use the ability, but when searching for low cost cards in an Ad Nauseum style deck it becomes a reliably permanent and recurrable tutor.
As an alternative for Rhystic studie, Circle of Verity from ravnica is pretty strong, for 3 it triggers on mana dorks and everything that taps, it often draw a loooot of cards and have a valuable effect late game.
Compulsion is a nice budget card that can help filter through draws. And Avenger en-Dal is slower than other removal, but I found him to be a very effective threat
I enjoy Patient Rebuilding as a budget card draw enchantment. I wasn’t sure at first but after a few games, as long as you can hit 3 cards, it’s worth the 5 cmc in my opinion. Also helps temporarily remove some threats. A budget alternative that I get a 50/50 split on is Blanket of Night. It’s oracle text is the same as Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth but it’s an enchantment for 1BB. It’s easier to deal with than Urborg, and slotting it in the 99 isn’t as easy as slotting Urborg, but at around $0.25 vs Urborg’s $20 price tag? If I’m on a tight budget, it works.
My absolute favourite substitute for Phyrexian Arena is Underworld Connections - yes you have to tap a land to get the same effect, but for ~4% of the price
Those dont work together at all. Notion Thief replaces your opponent's draw you drawing a card instead, which would prevent Psychic Possesion from triggering.
Another white exiling removal that's very budget is Crib Swap. Three mana is a lot more then some of the others, and the shapeshifter token could be a bad thing to give someone in certain games, but it's pretty cheap to get a hold of.
I'd like to put in a word for Dark Tutelage as being a great budget alternative. Phyrexian Arena is up there with Demonic Tutor as one of the most played black cards in all of commander but its over $10. Dark Tutelage has Dark Confidant's ability on an enchantment that costs 2 generic and a black. It's easier to cast in 2-3 color decks and can get you a similar utility as Phyrexian Arena but it only costs $0.45.
there is one that is SLIGHTLY more expensive at two colorless and a white called crib swap! it's $0.11 this is essentially path to exile just slightly more mana intensive if anyone might be interested. you also give them a 1/1 instead of a land so its better for decks with lots of pinging.
I gotta pick Dark Tutelage over Dark Confidant/Phyrexian Arena. While you can potentially take a larger amount of damage from Dark Tutelage compared to Phyrexian Arena you don't mind if you're playing life gain strategies or have built decks with low average cmc.
I like Psychic Possession as an alternative to Concentrated Sphinx obviously a little slower but it is harder to remove as a enchantment and stops one player from getting too greedy rather than you being the obvious greedy player.
Trade Routes stunts land mana development, only deck I'd consider it for is something that benefits from landfall like Tatyova. Mind's eye is only tolerable in monowhite or colorless decks, every other color has better draw.
Just pulled a Rystic Study out of one of my old shitty casual decks 😂 After years of absence from mtg I got interested in commander and just realized that a lot of cards me and my friends just casually played back in the days have become quiet expensive 😱
Seriously, i would play any instant cantrip in blue rather than play any of the mentioned cards in this video(apart from Remora - thats actually good). Paying an average of 4 mana for 1 additional card per turn on an enchantment is terrible in mono blue. Just play any instant spell that draws cards if you dont want to spend money on Rhystic Study. And if youre playing in multiple colors then you should be able to tutor for whatever you need rather than relying on draws.
I love using Mystic Remora since it pretty much never gets removed because everyone just assumes it'll go away on its own after a turn or two. Which is usually the case, but it almost always nabs me at least 5 cards in two spins around the table. Rhystic Study meanwhile gets removed as soon as someone has a card for it.
swords to plowshares is just directly better it had to be banned in modern, while path to exile isn't banned showing that its just better the only reason the price is higher is because it sees play in modern while swords to plowshares can't
Dispatch is low key my favorite replacement for Path to Exile. Metalcraft is SO easy to obtain especially when the commander format is all about mana rocks or artifact lands. So its literally just get that creature off the board, DONE.
As someone who never plays blue, and therefore hasn’t looked at rhystic study’s price, I always thought it was a budget replacement for mystic remora, as it’s basically useless if the table just continues to pay one.
I love these videos but can I just pull out one small critic? Try to keep the suggestions for budget substitutions relevant to the original card! In particular in this video when you talked about Rhystic Studies I think you went just a bit too far with cards that could be considered viable substitution. Other then that thanks for the tight upload schedule you are sticking with, I really find this one of the best TH-cam channel concerning EDH with a nice style and amazing presentation! Keep up the good work!
A storm deck can afford to pay 1 extra no problem. except for the turn they go off. the turn they go off they don't give 2 shits about the value you're getting. you are confusing rhystic study with thalia. thalia stops storm, not rhystic
Winds of abandon is phenomenal. The card is extra punishing to players who don’t commit enough basic lands to their mana base.
I'm probably picking it up soon in my Kykar deck - being paired with Acidic Soil for burn (deals damage to each player based on the number of lands that player controls)
A middle finger for those who enjoys pimping their deck too much.
Wings is good even if you give the lands. Exile board wipes are amazing
Like hermit druid players ? ^^
liberally apply Ob Nixilis for best results
Mystic Remora in Moldrotha decks....... *shiver*
They can choose NOT to pay, and then just play it for 1 on their Main phase every single one of their turns....
I have a mystic remora I never even thought about throwing it in my muldrotha I thank you and my friends will hate you
Elephant Grass is another heavy lifter in a Muldrotha deck.
I like to play Lethal Vapors with Muldrotha
Well it seems I have some cards to pick up
Mystic Remora is also incredible in decks rich on bounce/flicker/blink effects (so long as they can target permanents things other than creatures)
It’s been a long time coming but i finally became a Golden Pig Patreon! Super stoked!!!
Thanks for supporting arguably one of the most valuable EDH channels :3
Mugon Gaiaphage amen! I’ve been subbed sense like 2k just hadn’t joined patreon until now!
2 things:
1. You're the Golden Pig of commander youtube channels.
2. you should add pins to your merchandise store, they would be awesome! maybe the channel icon, the golden pig symbol, and maybe one for each color of mana?
Mitch, you should have a nice coin done - you on one side for heads, and the golden pig on the other for tails!
I absolutely love Declaration in Stone. Such a solid card. I’m glad it made the list
While it doesn't exile, Generous Gift is still a truly fantastic addition to white's removal repetoire. It along with Swords is an automatic include in all decks of mine that have white.
Same goes for Crib Swap, which does exile :D

A card that is a budget card for a ghostly prison or propaganda is : Aurification from onslaught
Vault-tec aurafacation is around the same price as ghostly prison
Norn’s Annex
My FootlongHammer Norns anex is 10$
Isaac Lacefield
Wait... what? 0__o
Isaac Lacefield you can buy norn’s annex for less than $5 on tcgplayer
Verity Circle works too, whenever someone taps a creature that's not attacking you draw a card. Wonderful in tap decks and against ramps
Glad you mentioned dispatch. I recommended it to a guy in my playgroup but he brushed it off like it didn't even exist cause of the "downside" PS he has a breya deck :/
I cannot thank this channel enough for helping me feed my addiction to strong decks while remaining in the black!
You definitely need to make more of these. Only two cards were covered in this video.
Psychic possession is the only one I didn't know about already. Looks good I might try it out
As an alternative for Rhystic studie, Circle of Verity from ravnica is pretty strong, for 3 it triggers on mana dorks and everything that taps, it often draw a loooot of cards and have a valuable effect late game.
I think Nezerhal is extremely under-used in Commander and Oathbreaker. 7/7 beater that passively draws you cards and protects itself. #ValueTown
Ahhh, Winds of Abandon... I put it in an EDH deck with Land Equilibrium. MUAHAHAHA!!
Compulsion is a nice budget card that can help filter through draws. And Avenger en-Dal is slower than other removal, but I found him to be a very effective threat

Staff of Nin. It may cost 6, but it's colorless nature and steady card draw adds up, especially in a blue deck with counter protection
Ryan Peters there are way better options for card advantage in blue. I would only run staff in white and/or red decks.
@@jakeapplegate6642 You are absolutely right, but it's almost like a signature at this point...
Cannibalize is hilarious. Cheap exile removal in black with a fairly minimal downside.
I'd forgotten about Cannibalize!
Good in volrath.
No one mentioning this sweet sweet interaction between Psychic Possesion and Notion Thief?
Can you explain ?
Those dont work together at all. Notion Thief replaces your opponent's draw you drawing a card instead, which would prevent Psychic Possesion from triggering.

Dude I swear your intro sounds exactly something that would be on a radio talk show.
Loved this format 👍

12:20 also, you may counter the triggered ability (ot just end the turn with domr artifacts/Spells) and then let the exiled creature be exiled!
Radiant purge is one of my favorites. For 1W you can exile a multicolored creature or enchantment at instant speed.

hush hush or it will get more expensive)
Psychic possession the rhystic study player, I like the way you think
As an alternative to Path to Exile, I'd recommend Crib Swap. Sure, it's 3 mana, but they only get left with a 1/1 changeling.
Passive card draw alternates:
Verity Circle
Mystic Remora
Insight
Kumena's Blessing
Psychic Possession
Nezahal
Great Videos
I forget about some of these cards when brewing despite owning a good amount of them
I like Psychic Possession as an alternative to Concentrated Sphinx obviously a little slower but it is harder to remove as a enchantment and stops one player from getting too greedy rather than you being the obvious greedy player.
mirror maid with psychic possession seems like some nice shenanigans for a copy deck
Trade Routes stunts land mana development, only deck I'd consider it for is something that benefits from landfall like Tatyova. Mind's eye is only tolerable in monowhite or colorless decks, every other color has better draw.
Insight has been better than rhystic study for me in mana games. In a 4 player game there's usually 1 or 2 players playing green
If you have black and a low cmc deck then dark tutelage is an amazing card for it's price
Psychic Possesion is also a one shot kill on anyone with a consecrated sphinx out (provided they have less cards in deck than you, which they should)
I still love my horizon chimera + Vilis, broker of blood combo.
Drawing cards for free is broken.
Just pulled a Rystic Study out of one of my old shitty casual decks 😂

I have monestary siege in my stax deck. Turns out Dragons is a pretty taxing effect 😅
Keep it up!!! Love your vids
Perfecto, I was looking for more draw card in Sharruum
I feel sire of stagnation is a good cheap option for consecrated sphinx
I have put GO TO JAIL from Unstable in as Path to Exile as well. Not as good, but cheap and why not?
You should definitely do a new one of these ❤
I really enjoy playing with mind's eye
Dire Tactics is an amazing budget alternative to Path of Exile if you run black.
You rock. Love these videos lol. Rystic to expensive lol
Arcane Encyclopedia is obviously the best version of Rhystic Study
Time to reflect is a great swords style of affect for zombie decks
Hell yeah, thank u Mitch
Radiant Purge against the Theros gods is so satisfying.
Why wouldn't Minds Eye work in blue? I would've figured its perfect since they keep mana up every turn anyways
The Staple Exchange.
Soul snare synergies with sun titan and emeria shepherd very well
I would be careful about all the withdrawls you are making... your knowledge credit score is probably super low
Wayyyy to late for this comment to be relevant but in the right artifact edh decks dispatch can be a game changer at 20 ish cents
Be careful with Psychic Possession if someone has Rhystic Study. If you can't pay one eventually you'll mill each other.

I remember rhystic study as the card that mtgmuddstah reads out in a boring, slow voice when someone plays it
listen to the intro on 1.5 speed, you wont regret it
dec in stone hasn't aged well. it use to cost a small fortune. it's a great token removal, you exile one and it hits all the others
