Dude Gordon can drive and drive extremely well; it's his driving style that gets him into trouble. He's 110% max attack at all times and in Dakar that means you don't finish.
I didn't put it right. He can't drive in DAKAR conditions. Fast doesn't mean good in DAKAR, you have to think more...

Australian coverage of the Dakar rally is PITIFULL. !!!!!! It runs for 30 minutes of which 12 minutes is taken up by TV commercials. Come on SBS get your act together and give us some decent coverage.
Downhill Bikes have 200mm of travel, 8 ton truck has 300mm of travel!?
Sneaky - The shock itself has 300mm of travel. If it is mounted higher up on the control arm, then it is leveraged to have much more than 300mm of travel. Think of your rear shock on your mountain bike - It has maybe 20-30mm of travel. Yet, you get 8-10 inches of travel due to the suspension geometry.

Vegard Claussen yea, but on mountain bikes, you measure the travel of the wheel, not the shock, I'm assuming on trucks, that's not the case?

So what's the difference between 4x4 and AWD?
Loïc Labonne what I've always read is that 4 wheel drive is part time where AWD is full time. So a 4x4 truck can do both 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive at least in what I've seen.

To put it simply: 4x4 is raw, actual power supply, usually split 50:50 between axles, AWD is more complicated and designed for speed, not off road
4x4 means you can only move in straight line since all 4 wheels are spinning at the same speed so you cant corner. Well you can but inside tyre will start skipping.
Awd is good for speed but actually on offroad its not so good. In desert you need speed not so much offroad so awd is preferred. But like rock climbing 4x4 is a lot better since there is no slipping.
4x4 means you have traction to all four wheels, which can be cornered as the diff lockers disengage when cornering, but engage when one wheel starts to lose traction. All wheel drive is just that. There is no Hi Lo range transfer case as in four wheel drives , therefore AWD has its linitations when going off road.
